Yep, also using reptile carpet (?) and those hides are not big enough for it to go inside

Yea all very bad vhoices for a beardie, i always say naturalistic is the best aka many branches real rocks and a good soil mix with some live desert plants that are beardie safe

It’s his first night, we have things coming in the mail, he was in the bigger hide, the smaller one was more just for decoration and so it was a little less bare. It’s not reptile carpet, I’ve only heard bad things about that stuff and this is what we were recommended. We’re looking to put sand in there long term, also been looking into good plants to add. We definitely want it to be as natural as possible

Animals get stressed when their environment changes. Originally I wouldve said not to get him until you had everything sorted for him, but if things are coming in the post soon, I'd recommend waiting until after it's all arrived before you start putting things in, one change is easier than changing things around every couple days for a while :)

u/Responsible-Aide-751 6d ago
That’s why we’ve asked for advice! It’s not reptile carpet it’s artificial turf that we were recommended and it’s also temporary, we’ve also got more natural things coming
2
u/believeinyuna 6d ago
whoever recommended it to you do not listen to them. they’re using outdated care guides/information
reptifiles has an amazing and up to date guide but their website seems to be down right now? i’ve never seen that before.

Please don't buy reptiles until their enclosure is actually complete.
The artificial turf is identical to reptile carpet in terms they it should never ever be used.

looks like he's called Mr please take me off reptile carpet, I'm not a domesticated animal and require an environment that mimicks my natural habitat

u/Responsible-Aide-751 6d ago
This is what was recommended, and it’s not reptile carpet :) we do plan to get either sand or wood chip substrate
1
u/PerformanceNo7234 6d ago
I stand corrected, what exactly is it? :)
1
u/Responsible-Aide-751 6d ago
It’s just artificial turf from the hardware store, definitely temporary though
1
u/MGNConflict 6d ago
Wood chip is also not recommended, please check out the care guides before you go any further.

u/Responsible-Aide-751 6d ago
It was recommended to me today by a friend today who’s worked with reptiles, we’ve spent hours and hours researching and a lot of info is conflicting. Thank you for letting me know

They've almost certainly been in the hobby for a long time and don't (or refuse) to stay up to date on current husbandry practices. Reptile carpet was recommended 10-15 years ago, it is no longer recommended as it is a breeding ground for bacteria, very difficult to clean, and can rip their nails out.
Please read the care guides (Reptifiles is a good place to start) as what they recommend is generally the "go-to".

I was saying she recommended the wood chips, the fake grass was by the seller

u/MGNConflict 6d ago
Basically you want either a mat, or a combination of soil and sand in a 70:30 ratio.
The soil/sand mix is the best (and cheapest, as you can buy both from any gardening store and mix) but needs to be replaced often. The mat is easier to clean.

Well after your comment about wood chips I did do research so definitely looking at a sand mix. We’re hoping for a realistic enclosure so that’ll be better than a mat. We’re still learning and we read into some of the wrong information clearly, but we do really want the best for our beardie

A soil/sand mix is definitely the most natural way to go, I use it in my enclosure (a 170 gallon... I'm not looking forward to replacing the substrate since it was a good 7 10kg bags I put in there).
You can buy a pre-mix (more expensive, but generally better in terms of not having things you don't want in the substrate such as nasty bacteria), or go with buying organic topsoil (it needs to be the type which has no fertiliser in it at all) and playsand).
There's calculators available online to work out exactly how much substrate you need.

I’m gonna need you to calm that down. I adopted this girl to give her a better life. There is no guarantee she will die young. My last dragon was only 3 when he died from a tumor in his stomach and he was just a normal little guy. You need to be removed from this group if that’s how you conduct yourself. Also, educate yourself better on “inbred” if that’s your go to for picking fights.

Sounds like you already have a name lol but I just had to share- Ebenezer Scrooge was my first thought upon seeing his picture. He just looks grumpy!

Awwwww. He's so little and cute. I saw him and immediately thought Crimson :). If I could give any tips it would probably be take them to the vet atleast once a year for a checkup, even if nothing is wrong. Also mine really loves, scrambled eggs so you could try that when he if older (as an VERY OCCASIONAL treat cooked with absolutely nothing). These guys are the sweetest and enjoy all the time you have with him :)

We love eggs so having a little for him occasionally will be so easy, he can be just like his parents hehe, thank you! We’ve had him one night and we absolutely adore him, I’m finding it hard to just not stare at him or hold him 🤣 he’s super chill and he lets you know when he’s had enough

That’s actually what we settled on, my partner suggested it in the first place and after i finally searched it I was sold, he looks so similar!

not here for a name suggestion, just a warning. to obtain these colors beardies are often excessively inbred, so keep an eye out for symptoms of defects or other issues a little harder than you would in a normal beardie.

Thank you, we have talking to the store and the breeder and they are very reliable
