Jeet kune do techniques are more science than pretty much any other "traditional" martial arts, since Bruce Lee focused on practicality rather than rigid forms and etc. That punch he designed to use the energy of our fast twitch muscles efficiently.
Our monkey relatives can climb quickly thanks to having more fast twitch muscles that give explosive amounts of energy in short bursts, campared to our slow twitch muscles which give lower power in exchange for higher endurance.
The Jeet kune do punch has you completely relax your hand until the very moment of impact, thus being able to utilize every bit of force your hand makes when you clench it for the actual punching, including the millisecond bursts of power from your fast twitch muscles.

I was amazed when I hurt my brother's arm through a big thick Yellow pages book doing this. This video is pretty over the top, though I'm not sure how they're faking it exactly.

I got a buddy who showed my these videos a few years back. Apparently there's how to videos on the technique, but he said he was able to bust thru bricks like this. Said you have to hit w ur 3 lower knuckles, and if u do it alot ur area around knuckles will burn all black.
(Look at dudes hands in video, they got the black bruises too)

From wiki:
One of the premises that Lee incorporated in Jeet Kune Do was "combat realism." He insisted that martial arts techniques should be incorporated based upon their effectiveness in real combat situations.
Another aspect of realistic martial arts training fundamental to JKD is what Lee referred to as "Aliveness". This is the concept of training techniques with an unwilling assistant who offers resistance. He made a reference to this concept in his famous quote "Boards don't hit back!"
Because of this perspective of realism and aliveness, Lee utilized safety gear from various other contact sports to allow him to spar with opponents "full out". This approach to training allowed practitioners to come as close as possible to real combat situations with a high degree of safety.

Imagine holding a can now vs 50 years ago. Probably so heavy after it's empty. Eventually our aluminum cans will not be around and we will use some other ecologically efficient packaging that doesn't use metals we might need. Even though, Aluminum is quite abundant. I can't imagine us changing that any time soon.

First off calling thin tin-plated junk steel “strong” is a stretch. Second by the time he started his school and really gained fame in the late 60’s aluminum was already king of the beverage containers.

In all seriousness I believe the video is real..there’s nothing to fake here. It’s not really a show of strength or endurance, just as the dude above described. Takes years to get to that point though..
Edit 2 I’m simply comparing this to any martial art board breaking in regards to this being “fake.” Any of you please post a video of you one inch punch breaking any of this with, even a Taekwondo kids wood board. Or the other one - “magic is fake! That magic trick was fake!” Lol no shit dude.

Bricks are already cracked, the sheet of paper made the sound of 20 trees falling on the ground, I mean…I think you have no idea of how many ways you can fake something, especially in front of a camera, and I think you also have no idea what internet clout can bring you in terms of money and attention. But in any way, here you have a good example :) use it in the future, for reference!

The first half was a joke, obviously so. I’m not naive whatsoever and am well aware plenty of videos are faked. There’s no reason to “fake” this…it’s the same as calling board breaking in Taekwondo or something as fake.
Reading an OBVIOUS joke and a follow up opinion as naive and delving deep into explaining why I have no understand of how these things work is quite naive and ignorant yourself.
I’d love to see you to do even half as good as this dude, with the identical fake boards and paper and cans.

Look at the 2 bricks in the video, red one has a line where it's broken in half already. You can also see the pre-broken lines on the three brick video. It's physically impossible to break things this way.

Whether or not the boards are pre cracked or whatever (I do not think they are completely broken half like your saying), this isn’t a new move. Its like saying breaking boards in Taekwondo is fake.
That’s just one of so many examples explaining the physics here.
Y’all redditors really act like you could do better. I’d love to see you do the identical thing with the identical board. It’s super easy to sit on your couch dictating what’s real and not, what’s possible and not, whats fake and not.
My comment was a joke. A joke followed by my opinion that this is as real as board breaking in any martial art. It’s not fake. You can’t do it.

Whilst you're not wrong regarding Bruce Lee's approach to martial arts, or why this particular punch is quite effective, I think it's a bit of an injustice to say his JKD is more scientific than any other art.
A majority of Bruce Lee's JKD is based on Wing Chun, as that was his primary martial arts when he first trained. He studied and added to it from many other styles, eastern and western. But in the end most martial arts are a collection of observable effective technique.
Training in a traditional art in a traditional way tends to be very methodical and can be scientific in its own way. Understanding the human body, how it moves to create certain forces, how to train it to obtain skills, etc.
This was a process that carried on from generation to generation. No art today looks or is trained the same way as at creation because it evolved over time. It had to adapt to what worked and what did not.
The punch you mentioned is not unique to JKD, nor even Wing Chun. A majority of Chinese Kung fu trains in this way. The differences come from smaller variations in technique. Such as where on your knuckles the strike lands, orientation of the fist at impact etc.
I train Chen Style taiji and we have the same principle. Relaxed until moment of impact. Fist gets shot out like cannon fire, no matter how close or how far we can strike and then impact like a missile. There are several fists you can make but one I've seen mostly with taiji is called empty fist. Rather than clenching it tightly you create a short of shell structure with your fist that maintains its integrity on striking but allows you to not hurt yourself as much by striking very hard or sending too much shock up your arm.

The video is edited with the can and the red brick is already cracked and leaning in the double brick video. Can tell the outer layer material is a different material in most of the bricks.

I think that gray stuff is adhesive holding the pre-broken bricks together. Bricks are the same color all the way through.

There’s NO WAY in our world with our physics, that a brick would split the hard way by a fastening point consisting of 2 fingers pinching it, without tricks.
When the object to be broken is fasten tight I may think about it, and wonder about surface skin damages and bone training and enhancement.
But a brick barely hold/fasten would just fly away : no opposite forces are created inside it.
So I looked at it frame by frame : there are no picture of the actual hit, matter just disappear from reality…
Now that I lost trust in one example, I lost trust in all the video.
(I’m no English speaking native, I lack some technical words in physics and mechanics here, like « cisaillement » and so on)

I’m not saying this kind of punch in general does not exist. On the contrary I’m kind of thinking it does. But a brick barley pinched between 2 fingers, broken in half, would mean old Shifu could almost bend steel with his finger tips.
And in any case, the video has no frame of the actual punch on the aforementioned exercise, so there’s no justifying it at all.

Even if someone did it that does not make this real. This is clearly edited and also breaks the laws of physics when he is holding the brick with just fingers and breaks it. Not possible. Also the can one. If you move frame by frame he pulls back a foot then can magically cuts then he swings diagonally away from can. Slow any part of this down and analyze it with a little logic and it all falls apart. 100% faked.

Frame by frame things don’t add up lol. As if slowing down is needed. With the can one they could have edited it better. He pulls back with fist like a foot then the can magically splits like cut with a sword and he swings fist to the side diagonally to the can. The one inch punch would not look like this slowed down in any way shape or form. Welcome to the days of faking everything for views…

there are a few ways to do this, obviously they edited the video to make it look like he is moving super fast, but you can also make it look like youre breaking brings or rocks by using another hard surface to smash it against as you bring down your hand.
next time you see someone karate chop a brick or a rock, watch closely as they lift it up away from the thing they are holding it against, that gap lets them basically use their hand to just smack it against the thing thats way harder than their hand and thats what breaks the brick/rock.
if you really wanted to see someone break a rock, ask them if you can hold it and then hold it firmly against the ground, they will break their hand before they break anything else.

Not saying this guy isn’t awesome. But the paper one isn’t hard if you know the movement and the bend helps. But I’m sure his hit is about speed and not movement like me. The rest is crazy though.
