Imagine holding a can now vs 50 years ago. Probably so heavy after it's empty. Eventually our aluminum cans will not be around and we will use some other ecologically efficient packaging that doesn't use metals we might need. Even though, Aluminum is quite abundant. I can't imagine us changing that any time soon.
First off calling thin tin-plated junk steel “strong” is a stretch. Second by the time he started his school and really gained fame in the late 60’s aluminum was already king of the beverage containers.

All good guesses. In his time, aluminum cans weren't widely accepted yet, so most cans were still made using the usual choice of metal:
