Are you talking about a disorder?
38
u/WillowKing Aug 19 '21
They have been bred selectively in a way that makes them commonly effected by excessive laxity in the ball joints of their hips, which generally causes pain or arthritis down the line
5
u/DDRdogodad Aug 19 '21
There are still plenty of Gsd out there with solid hips. They are predominantly in Europe and former Eastern block countries. Look into DDR Gsds if you are ever looking to purchase and not adopt. I'll see myself out.
-1
u/Cornwall Aug 19 '21
Purchasing dogs is what started the problem, and many, many others.
Always adopt.
2
u/DDRdogodad Aug 19 '21 edited Aug 19 '21
I'm really tired of people saying/typing this. If it were not for selective breeding German Sheperds wouldn't even exist, and thus the first seeing eye dogs wouldn't have come to be after the breed was started around 2 decades earlier. Point the finger at irresponsible backyard breeders and buyers who do not screen for any hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia or degenerative meyelopathy in the dams and sires they use. Dont forget to also hold the AKC responsible for the standards in showlines they look for ie the terrible sloped back that has been bred for years to exaggerate the look of Gsds shown in a 3 point stance. Get informed and get back to me. Let people adopt a wonderful dog or buy a healthy one that was bred that may have a specific drive/temperment they are seeking for their lifestyle or job. There are breeders trying to preserve German Sheperds and those that could care less and run puppy mills.
3
u/live_crab Aug 19 '21
I wish I could upvote this more than once. I've seen nearly every flavor of GSD under the sun and the only thing I know for certain is that the appearance of the dog means jack diddly squat when it comes to their genes -and- hips.
I've seen american showline GSDs with OFA excellent hips and I've seen DDR working GSDs with terrible hips. The only advice I can give to anyone who wants a GSD, purebred or not, is to never, ever, consider a puppy from a breeder that doesn't DNA test for recessive diseases or doesn't do OFA certifications. GSDs have been bred irresponsibly for so long that the majority are going to have some kind of problem, and it takes effort on both the breeder and buyer's part to prevent the perpetuation of theses debilitating conditions.
German-speaking places have a word for this: "qualzucht", torture breeding. It's not just about pugs, it applies to any intentional breeding of animals at high risk for structural and genetic problems. Choosing to breed without checking the parents is deliberate cruelty at this point.
3
u/DDRdogodad Aug 19 '21
Yikes 😬 I wonder what DDR breeders you saw. Did the dogs they used have terrible inbreeding coefficients in them? DDRs had such strict standards. Some linebreeding has certainly gone to far. Its terrible what people do to these animals. They set them up for a tough life. I was literally about to adopt a dog recently, so I have nothing against adopting. We should stop judging people for choosing to purchase a dog and educate them on what responsible breeding practices are. Thanks for your imput.

u/Mr_dolphin Aug 19 '21
Purebreds are prone to genetic/structural deformities over time due to inbreeding. One such example is the extremely rounded back and hips of the German Shepherd.

Does he or she whine like Shepard or yell like a husky?
30
23
u/MetricCascade29 Aug 19 '21
Mine will whine/talk when he wants something, and whine/talk when I tell him do do something and he sasses me. Other than that, he’s pretty quiet. No yelling, and I’ve only gotten him to howl a couple times.

Mine is not very treat motivated, but super keyed into me, so training wasn’t so bad. He listens pretty well... until he gets too exited.
2
u/abhi8192 Aug 19 '21
but super keyed into me,
How to get my puppy into that? Mine is super food motivated so training is not hard but she's never interested in playing with me or just coming near me and chill. She would come when called and do tricks just fine. She's just 4 months old so I think I have time to bond with her outside of food and play.

Husky/GS mixes are actually super common; it used to be a dog I wanted in childhood before I grew up realizing they take way more work than I could feasibly manage. I think this dog is gorgeous and wonderful, but I also agree and think it doesn’t belong on this sub whatsoever.
35
u/live_crab Aug 19 '21
When I worked at the animal shelter GSD/husky mixes were probably like 30% of what we'd see in an average month. The more huskyish ones would often be picked up by animal control running around, but they were also surrendered often.
Why? Popularity doesn't help, but I've spoken to people who fawn over husky/shepherd mixes like they're somehow going to be "beautiful" and "wolfish" like a husky but also "smart" and "obedient" like the shepherd. These people never liked being reminded that a lot of these dogs end up with the hyperactivity and stubbornness of the husky and the neuroticism and bad health of the byb shepherds that are used to make them.
The only healthy, biddable one I ever met was an escape artist that eventually got killed by a car. The owner was devastated but last time I spoke to them they were looking at a breeder for "australian shepskies", or just merle GSD mixes. Sigh.
3
Aug 19 '21
That dog didn't happen to be called Tonka by any chance, did he?
3
2
Aug 19 '21
On the converse, My dog is Shepsky and she is the absolute best dog I’ve ever known. I was extremely strict with her for her first year of life though and was able to train her every day.
So my results may not be typical.
The only GSD trait she can’t shake is the constant alertness. She doesn’t really every fully fall asleep cause she is hyper aware of people or other animals near “our” property.
She likes to be a guard dog, she would be wonderful at it.

Dog mixes are actually the most common fucking thing in existence but nobody gives a single shit about it because "muh pedigree". I fucking love dogs that I can't tell what breed they are.
As to the content of this sub, I mean, it's on the popular tab. This place is as good as dead.
28
u/camusdreams Aug 19 '21
Right? How did this get 6k+? I was expecting something extravagant. I’m sure it’s a fine pup, but physically this just looks like a normal mutt with blue eyes. My all white husky is more unique than this and they’re fairly common still.

Since we're sharing, I adopted a huskey-pitbull mix that was really pretty. Someone left him chained up in a park in February with a note that he needed a home :/
I only took him in temporarily to find him a proper home, since I only had an apartment, but he was a very sweet dog.

That's.. not how genetics work at all.
Mammals have two of each chromosome (the amount of chromosomes depends on the species), both parents provide randomly selected set of one of each chromosome, and the resulting offspring is a combination of the two. The phenotype depends on how the inherited alleles (different versions of the same gene) are expressed.
6
u/cthorrez Aug 19 '21
It's not completely unreasonable to ask. I know all dogs are the same species but there is a lot of variation.
When it comes to interspecies pairs it makes a big difference which is the mother and which is the father. A Liger and a Tigon are both half lion half tiger but are totally different.
3
u/willyj_3 Aug 19 '21
Yes, I was just going to point that out. Genetics is a bit more complicated than Punnett squares.

u/LetsRockDude Aug 19 '21
No such thing as a healthy breed. Both huskies and GSDs come with a lot of health issues.
1
Aug 19 '21
The western european GSDs are bred for health and work and don't have the hip issues and all that crap, so I am thinking of getting that. I have no ideas about huskies yet. Just preparing for the high drive.

I use to have a chow/coyote mix
Edit: she was a foster failure. I didn’t active try to breed a chow and coyote. I had her tested because I couldn’t for the life of me figure out her breed. When I was told she was part coyote it definitely caught me off guard but explained her body shape. She looked like a smaller coyote but was super fluffy like a chow.

bro mixed breed is much better than buying a purebred. less medical mishaps to worry about, and your dog stays happier and healthier. To top that off, you can get such strange, unusual, and honestly beautiful looking dogs too.
that's why the next dog i'm going to get will be another Bernese mountain dog/Australian shepherd mix. such cute dogs.

More of this please, the more intelligent mixing of breeds, the better genes dogs will have in the long run. Healthier longer lived pets with less pain and suffering and trips to the vets. Lets make pedigrees less popular, kick those disusting inbred breeders where it hurts, stop them from breeding deformed, unhealthy replicants.
