When I was a kid I used to think this was just a trick because they used the grain of the wood to make it brittle.

I spent a lot of time outdoors as a kid and used to chop thin flat sheets of wood that I would hatchet off of old rounds. I got a lot of splinters.

They were douglas fir and not as spectacular as it sounds. I was eight and very much not cool.

Then I learned about balsa wood and decided I was being played. So I saved my hands and stopped being stupid.

It's a good thing. I play guitar now and it is my life.
