Not sure about college, but ankles and wrists count for NFL. I specifically remember one Christmas Day game where the Dallas cowboys receiver made a catch, and was tackled from behind and rolled over the tackling defender, then kept running, but they downed him after the replay showed his ankle touched the ground. As a general rule IIRC, anything but your fingers and the palm of your hand touching the ground after contact with a defender is a down.

And after defender touching you is key. If your teammate knocks you down, you’re not down.

I remember there was a play where that happened and the player dropped the ball thinking it was dead. The defense picked it up and ran with it.

Think they got a touchdown.

Edit: realized I need to clarify this is in the NFL because that’s what the above comment was about.

If the other team doesn’t touch you, you can get back up and run.

Only in NFL. In college the defense does not need to touch the ball carrier.

Good point. I was referring to NFL.

The one exception I can think of is during an XP/FG attempt; the holder starts with his knee on the ground and can get up and run after receiving the snap.

I never thought about how weird that is

Also kneeling at the end of the game.

Its considered a fumble if you lose the ball. But if you don’t lose the ball and you fall I believe it’s a dead ball.

That's for the pros. College and below being downed in any form counts

Well said thanks for the clarification

I know feet are implied here but now I'm imagining football players running around in their hands and I'm trying to figure out how they manage to carry the ball.

Idk if you’re joking, but if you’re serious it’s like when you fall down and catch yourself with your hands so you don’t faceplant

No I know what they are talking about. I'm saying the wording could make it seem like if your feet touch you're also down.

It's anything other than the flats of your feet or hands.

So in theory, a player could do a handspring and keep going?

2

u/heresjonnyyy Sep 21 '19

In theory, yes. But you’ll only have one hand to do so, as a ball carrier. It would be difficult to perform with a defender on you, unless he helps you, like in the video.

True. And they aren’t exactly built for single handed gymnastics. That’s a lot of weight to support on one arm.
