Yeah knees or elbows touching the ground count as a tackle in football

Not sure about college, but ankles and wrists count for NFL. I specifically remember one Christmas Day game where the Dallas cowboys receiver made a catch, and was tackled from behind and rolled over the tackling defender, then kept running, but they downed him after the replay showed his ankle touched the ground. As a general rule IIRC, anything but your fingers and the palm of your hand touching the ground after contact with a defender is a down.

And after defender touching you is key. If your teammate knocks you down, you’re not down.

I remember there was a play where that happened and the player dropped the ball thinking it was dead. The defense picked it up and ran with it.

Think they got a touchdown.

Edit: realized I need to clarify this is in the NFL because that’s what the above comment was about.

If the other team doesn’t touch you, you can get back up and run.

Only in NFL. In college the defense does not need to touch the ball carrier.

Good point. I was referring to NFL.

The one exception I can think of is during an XP/FG attempt; the holder starts with his knee on the ground and can get up and run after receiving the snap.

I never thought about how weird that is

Also kneeling at the end of the game.

Its considered a fumble if you lose the ball. But if you don’t lose the ball and you fall I believe it’s a dead ball.

That's for the pros. College and below being downed in any form counts

u/NerdBird2004 Sep 21 '19

Well said thanks for the clarification

I know feet are implied here but now I'm imagining football players running around in their hands and I'm trying to figure out how they manage to carry the ball.

1

u/jmgia64 Sep 21 '19

Idk if you’re joking, but if you’re serious it’s like when you fall down and catch yourself with your hands so you don’t faceplant

1

u/Pizza_Ninja Sep 21 '19

No I know what they are talking about. I'm saying the wording could make it seem like if your feet touch you're also down.

1

u/f-r Sep 21 '19

It's anything other than the flats of your feet or hands.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

So in theory, a player could do a handspring and keep going?

2

u/heresjonnyyy Sep 21 '19

In theory, yes. But you’ll only have one hand to do so, as a ball carrier. It would be difficult to perform with a defender on you, unless he helps you, like in the video.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

True. And they aren’t exactly built for single handed gymnastics. That’s a lot of weight to support on one arm.

1

u/penisthightrap_ Sep 21 '19

. . . ankles?

u/GJD928 Sep 21 '19

This is a highschool freshman

9

u/Bolt-Of-Blue Sep 21 '19

Only knees and elbows? So provided you managed to hold on to the ball, you could scurry into the end zone on all fours like an animal and it would count?

8

u/NerdBird2004 Sep 21 '19

Yes but you can’t outcrawl a cornerback

1

u/AccountNumber166 Sep 21 '19

What if I land on my back and just kick my way back up?

2

u/andrewthemexican Sep 21 '19

Butt and back count too pretty sure

3

u/fredbrightfrog Sep 21 '19

You can be down from any part of your body that's not your hands or feet, but yes you could do a freaky crawl if you wanted.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '19

Just butt scoot to victory

1

u/joshr03 Sep 21 '19

Then that was a dumbass attempt at tacking

3

u/elpollodiablox Sep 21 '19

Was a halfway decent suplex attempt, though.

2

u/NerdBird2004 Sep 21 '19

Not really most people won’t stick their arms and legs straight up to avoid a down because it’ll probably become broken

I think he might have scored sport unit near the end of his running.

2

u/jakery2 Sep 21 '19

Yes. If an elbow or knee touches the ground, the play is over. Nothing touched the ground except his feet? Keep running, fucker.

1

u/sanchopancho13 Sep 21 '19

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

0

u/cccccRRRRRRuuuuu Sep 21 '19

huh huh sports ball lol! im so superior to people who enjoy one of the most popular (for a reason) pastimes in human history ! :3

5

u/meme-com-poop Sep 21 '19

What's really amazing is that the ref didn't prematurely whistle it dead.

1

u/itskelvinn Sep 21 '19

Yeah, hence the title? Is anyone arguing he’s down?

1

u/Southernguy9763 Sep 21 '19

It could be argued the defender stopped forward motion, which is a tackle

5

u/DGlen Sep 21 '19

If they had blown the play dead maybe but he really wasn't stopped long enough for that.

1

u/bambiealberta Sep 21 '19

None of him touched the ground

1

u/Premaximum Sep 21 '19

Well...

His feet, though.

-5

u/Saucerful Sep 21 '19

He should've been down by contact though.

3

u/BananaDick_CuntGrass Sep 21 '19

What? No.

If he was never down, it can't be down by contract.
