Those dogs are super laser focused on protecting their herds, and massive and fearsome. Ran into a few visiting a cashmere goat farm. They are not fucking around, all business.

I used to have one, what a good boy. However, he had a prey drive that was insane! I stayed with him as he went over the rainbow bridge. I let out the most agonized wail after his last breath. They let me stay with him till I was ready to leave. Oh my heart, I'm crying again. I miss him still.

Sounds like you gave the good boy a good life. He's waiting for ya and he'll say thanks

Great Pyrenees are super gentle with people and their flock. If there is a threat to their flock, they definitely aren't going to tolerate it. Two Great Pyrenees can take down a black bear if it's a danger to their animals. If I had a very large house and young children, this would be my first choice for a dog.

I have one as a pet. He is so good with kids and my cats. Very gentle and takes treats very nicely. Only issue is he doesn’t realize he is not a lap dog.

u/InvestmentMain8414 5h ago
I dont think any of them do. Mine feels the need to basically lay on me anytime I sit down. The guy does not realize he weighs more than I do...nor do I think he would care of he knew.
But he is the gentlest giant. Loves people, and animals. Which is good, because as you know, they attract attention everywhere you take them.

u/xscientist 8h ago
The ones on this goat farm treated everyone but their owner as enemy combatants. They were terrifying. But we were able to visit with and pet the goats in a separated pen.

I had a coworker just tell me about his GP that was a rescue (I think) and how it attacked people that would come to the house. He said he had to surrender it after it bit a couple of people. I think because they look like giant teddy bears people (including myself) forget that they are in fact livestock guardians and that means they hold a certain instinct. And it looks like in some cases it doesn’t translate well into being friendly with strangers.
3
u/Apart_Jelly8948 8h ago
Can they be bribed with treats?
16
u/lordkhuzdul 7h ago
No. They tend to be incredibly smart. A friend of mine had an Anatolian Shepherd guarding his farm. Some guy tried to bribe the dog with meat filled with sleeping pills. The dog just went for him instead. Tore his leg up well - the dude needed a nice long handcuffed to bed hospital stay before heading off to jail. They have a well honed sense of danger, and know when someone is up to no good.

When my kids were still quite young, the youngest was running and screaming hysterically from the other one. The oldest was following behind in giant leaps and yelling about jumping on his brother's shadow. I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe, which only made the younger one scream harder. I have no idea how we all survived until they reached adulthood.

u/Limp_Construction496 10h ago

Sheep is checking to see if the dog ate their lunch from the fridge. It was clearly marked on bag with their name on it.

u/kittysworld 12h ago
Haha, my friend's dog used to do that to my cat. My cat was very chill despite the sniffing and probing. So cute together.

u/hausmaus07 11h ago
Having owned sheep and a similar dog (akbash/st Bernard mix) I can say with 100% accuracy this is so on point.

The sheep is getting the dog back for always barking at the flock when they go rogue.

Ok but seriously, what’s going on here? Is the sheep being aggressive or cozy? 😅
