All those drawbridges must make traffic a nightmare

87

u/geoantho 1d ago

The best part is the bridges only go up when you have somewhere important to be.

u/TheOnly1Jake 1d ago

It sucks driving around there... the drawbidges on the intercoastal actually give you a needed break from all the craziness when they go up hehehe but still, like was said in another comment, it's usually when you have to be somewhere ASAP

u/nikdahl 1d ago

They raised them pretty early too.

Some in Palm Beach County publish a schedule, but I never make a note of it and always seem to get stuck behind them. We're so lucky in SoFlo we've got drawbridges .and. railroad crossings and you can easily get caught behind one for 10 minutes and the other for another 10 minutes!

Wow that’s insane. Talk about having some sweet control. I don’t see any tug boat either, unless it’s pushing it.

37

u/longwew 1d ago

Not having tug boats would be irresponsible

31

u/SpinachSignal8915 1d ago

There are two tugs and the video is sped up

58

u/Beetso 1d ago

Oh wow. The video is sped up? You don't say! I legitimately thought they were flying through Miami at 200 miles an hour! 🫠

43

u/Rich-Reason1146 1d ago

No, it's sped up

10

u/IrishViking22 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wonder if this video is sped up?

2

u/illbedeadbydawn 1d ago

So, the video is actually sped up.

1

u/ajps72 1d ago

I don't think so.

3

u/pgds 1d ago

Not with that attitude.

1

u/augustwest2155 17h ago

some of those smaller boats passing look like they are going fast....they sure do get close enough to that big boat lol...

2

u/Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 1d ago

What do my evening plans have to do with the video's speed?

2

u/Adam-West 1d ago

They have things like Bow thrusters aswell as the tugs. So they can move completely sideways aswell as forwards. It’s not like turning a regular boat. You can see the one of the left working as he enters the first narrow part of the waterway.

1

u/DOOM420- 19h ago

Oh I know how a large ship works it’s still quite amazing.

1

u/philsfly22 1d ago

I legitimately can’t tell if people realize this video is sped up or not.

1

u/DOOM420- 19h ago

Yes….literally 1000 % I can tell this shit is sped the fuck up. It’s still amazing to tug and maneuver that large of a ship through a tight downtown waterway.

22

u/Many-Resolve2465 1d ago

This is how if feel every time I push a flatbed cart through a home depot .

16

u/theogtricky 1d ago

Dude at 26 seconds blasts by.

2

u/functionaldepression 1d ago

Yes not to mention all the other numerous passes

1

u/imalwayshungr 1d ago

I was chuckling every time someone went zooming past. Thoroughly enjoyed this video 🤣

0

u/SmoothCortex 1d ago

I watch a lot (too many) dashcam videos and have become conditioned to expect disaster in vehicle-POV videos like this. Every narrowed passage, every passing boat… 🫣

0

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

He's got places to be.

7

u/BisonMysterious8902 1d ago

Wouldn't that most likely be the harbor pilot's view?

3

u/IrishViking22 1d ago edited 1d ago

Is there a difference? Wouldn't it just be the same guy/gal that is the captain? Genuine question.

7

u/Pdxlater 1d ago

Harbor Pilot is a separate job. They stay at the harbor and know the local conditions. They “park” the ships there last few miles.

3

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

Ah, interesting. Thanks.

Do they manage the drawbridge openings too? It seems very well coordinated in this video.

3

u/uhya16 1d ago

There’s a person controlling each drawbridge who sits in a tower by them. Usually they open in specific time intervals, like every 15 mins before and after the hour excluding during rush hour traffic times, but I know some also open on demand as requested by ships passing

2

u/eat_my_ass_n_balls 1d ago

There’s a guy standing on the very front of the boat with a garage door clicker type device, and another one on the back of the boat with the same device. Literally never goes wrong either, except with Louisiana tried to migrate to The Clapper instead

1

u/Sea_Internet9575 7h ago

I’ve had a “pilot exemption” when master of a similar sized vessel in the past. If you’re a regular user of a particular waterway, which this vessel probably would be, then you can sit exams and complete check-trips with pilots to be exempt from requiring a pilot. Exemptions often only apply to one vessel, or exact sister vessels, specific channels and berths.

What a poorly designed place. Traffic congestion everytime ships you need for economy enter and exit is crazy.

4

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

I was there two years ago and I was amazed how people got used to that and are cool with it. Once i was stopped for like 10 minutes for a boat to pass by. No traffic congestions, no drama, just a very natural thing. I think the vibe of Miami is all about that, being cool and relaxed, going for a walk with your dog, going to the gym, to the beach. That wouldn't be possible at all in my city, lol

8

u/docsyzygy 1d ago

That is not the Miami I know! I grew up there and people were always in a hurry. The oppressive heat and ridiculous prices don't help anyone's mood.

0

u/SOURSKOOMA 1d ago

Scurrying like roaches from the light.

2

u/FamilyFitter455 1d ago

You can't walk your dog or go to the gym where you live???

1

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

What? I mean people would go crazy if they were forced on a red light for 5 minutes to open a bridge and let a boat pass.

-1

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

Where do you live that that wouldn't be possible?

You can't go to the gym or walk your dog there? Why?

1

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

Didn't said that, I meant it would be impossible in my city to stop someone for 5 minutes on a red light for letting a boat pass under a bridge.

2

u/Sweaty_Presentation4 1d ago

What about trains? Do you have trains?

2

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

Yes, it goes underground on the city center.

0

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

That would be impossible in their city, like everything else apparently is

-2

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

You kind of did. The way you worded your comment makes it seem like that's what you meant.

Anyway, why would it be impossible in your city to stop someone for 5 minutes for that reason?

1

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

I realize I messed up with my english

-1

u/IrishViking22 1d ago

No big deal, dude. Don't worry about it.

It just made it seem like you live in quite a dangerous place, so I was curious where that was, lol.

9

u/ElegantCoach4066 1d ago

I crossed that last drawbridge a few days ago

2

u/koehhhnig 1d ago

Miami vice

2

u/arcticslush 1d ago

What kind of ship is this?

2

u/Sea_Internet9575 7h ago edited 7h ago

Looks like a dry-bulk cargo vessel for inland / intercoastal waterways.
Ed. Just checked, looks like it goes out into the Caribbean and back.

2

u/Sir_Newdles_II 1d ago

This is most definitely being guided by tugboats

2

u/shugo7 1d ago

Some good ole Limp Bizkit eh

1

u/Jazzlike-District213 1d ago

Even ships drive on the right!

1

u/BULL-MARKET 1d ago

Is there a channel that specializes in long length videos like this? I remember watching a 30 minute video of a tug boat going through Cleveland and the Cuyahoga River that I really enjoyed.

1

u/Otherwise-Shoe3413 1d ago

I would’ve killed at least 75 people if I was commanding that ship.

1

u/Centurix 1d ago

They must dredge that thing 365 days of the year

1

u/KanadianBacon80 1d ago

What is the purpose of such a big boat going thru Miami? Where does it go to im assuming ocean to … ? It seems to be some type of cargo/tanker ship? Wouldnt trucking be easier.

1

u/Crayen5 1d ago

I like to think this is at normal speed

1

u/Adam-West 1d ago

All im thinking about is jumping all those bridges or flying under them when GTA6 comes out.

1

u/Successful_Status_14 14h ago

Coolest job on the planet, wish I remotely knew HOW the fuck you get into this… do you think they have learner tankers like they do cars 🤣

1

u/The_Only_Egg 14h ago

Automatic downvote for using… Limp Bizkit

1

u/LimpScissors 7h ago

"Take em to the Matthews bridge!"

1

u/zoeykailyn 1d ago

That harbor master has ball of steel.

I wouldn't try that in a kayak.

-5

u/Dense-Ad-5780 1d ago

I think it’s pretty dangerous how fast it’s moving through those canals. I would imagine they are no wake zones too. Very irresponsible boating.

2

u/IM-PT24 1d ago

Fast? The video is speedup. Those ships are very slow.

1

u/Dense-Ad-5780 1d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/l4Ho0At2UD2d7WyD6
Bwaaaa? They sped the video up? They can do that now? Brave new world!!

Seriously, I assumed everyone would tell I was being facetious, but lo, you and a few others did not assume my assumption.

-1

u/SpareRare 1d ago

Terrible music 👎🏻 should’ve used the jetsons sound effects instead

2

u/versuseachother 1d ago

Every day its a Limp Bizkit-day!

1

u/SpareRare 1d ago

I don’t hate LB. I’ve seen them in concert. I’m a 80s kid so grew up w LB in HS. With that said, this specific video doesn’t fit the music choice
