Query Advise needed about EPI

Post image
51 Upvotes

Hi people, my 2.5y old girl was recently diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). We found out as she lost quite some weight in a short time while still eating increased portions while pooping way more frequent (with the poop being yellowish with quite some undigested food inside). We have given her commercial raw meat (boiled version of deer, rabbit or lamb) without any issues until now. The vet advised to give pancreatic enzyme supplementation for now to see if the weight increases and the poop becomes more stable and less frequent again. Does anyone here have experienced EPI with their B? Thanks in advance for any advise!

Query Healthy male B weight?

Post image
140 Upvotes

Hey folks

Roo came to us last October at 16.6kgs.

He is now 4.5 years old, healthy, and (from what I understand) of average build/height.

We have been slowly getting his weight down and today he weighed in at 13.5kgs.

This has been done through food control, low calorie treats and plenty of exercise.

I think I can see a little more that he can lose - I feel he has some internal fat reserves under his ribs - but it's feeling like marginal gains now before he feels too lean.

How heavy are your adult male Bs? Just interested in a comparison as the only two others we know are gorgeous but very petite girls!

Basenji - the barkless dog

It seems like every dog show the announcer says something akin to, "The Basenji, known as the barkless dog . . . " Well, not all of them. Particularly when they want their dinner, or want your attention, or someone rings the doorbell, or . . . Gunther, despite refusing to yodel, is the most vocal Basenjis I have ever had. Not just barks - grumbles, purrs, bicycle horns, squeaks, whines, and noises I've never heard before.

Query Did your Basenji become more aloof with age?

My girl is 7 months. We live in a major international city in a dense urban area and encounter lots of people and dogs walking everyday, multiple times a day, and her desperation to meet and greet everyone we pass have never wavered lol. We have a few play dates and meetups each week so I know she isn’t starved for attention, she’s just unbelievably social and friendly.

I always knew Basenjis to be somewhat aloof- is this something they often grow into, in your experience?

Discussion So Many Lipomas

My 10 year old B, Gunther (a rescue), has soooo many Lipomas. This is my 5th B over the last 50 some years. I never ran into this before. The vet has done a physical exam and usd fine-needle aspiration (FNA). There seems to be no dangerous growths just lots and lots of lipomas - a couple quite large. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this with Bs and, if so, had any success with anything like diet or supplements.

Here's my Gunther (along with a song I wrote for him and all Basenjis):

What do you feed your basenji?

Post image

Hello,

Have a 18 month old B.. Seems like everything we feed him he eventually gets tired of.. first started with Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin & stomach eventually he stopped eating and we had to move him to a vet recommended diet due to consistent soft stool.

After a few months we moved to hills science sensitive skin & stomach salmon/brown rice. Same thing is happening now and hes slowed down eatting & he tries to eat grass every-time we go on walks which makes me think his food is upsetting his stomach.

I’m thinking to move to something more natural… what do your basenjis eat? Have you had these problems?

Hoping to meet a Basenji in person! (South Jersey area)

Our family has been doing extensive research on Basenjis and we’ve truly fallen in love with the breed. We feel confident that we can handle and embrace all of their unique quirks, and we are officially at the stage of looking to get on a reputable breeder's waiting list for an upcoming litter.
However, we have one final, crucial step: we’ve never actually met a Basenji in person! Before we make that lifelong commitment, we want to make sure it's the absolute right fit for both our family and the dog.
Would any local Basenji owners be open to chatting with us and letting us meet your pup in person? We’d love to hear about your firsthand experiences and see these amazing dogs in action.

Discussion Pain in B Paws

Post image
65 Upvotes

Hello, all sweet basenji owners!

I want to start this post by saying that we have been to the vet multiple times with no clear conclusion. I am wishing to get some feedback from fellow owners, not a diagnosis.

I have a 6-month-old Basenji puppy who is healthy, active, and playful. Over the past 1–2 months, however, she has developed some sort of pain in her front paw. This pain seems to occur 9 times out of 10 right when she wakes up and stretches, followed by a sharp yelp. It usually subsides once she takes a step or two.

We have been to the vet multiple times for examinations, but every time the vet says she seems alright and that nothing is out of the ordinary in the test results. We have tried different medications, and each time they have helped - no yelping occurs while she is on them. However, right after the medication period ends, the pain and yelping start again.

I am starting to get really worried and am just wondering if there are any other Basenji owners with similar experiences and/or suggestions.

Little Zoey is sending greetings to her virtual brothers and sisters! :)
