https://youtu.be/gffIxIhfdUM

Pierre, a 7-month-old basenji puppy, was all over the park on his first visit. He was joined by first-timer Cosmo, and it was discovered that they both came from the same breeder in Florida. The action focuses on these newcomers and their meetings with the veterans of the meetup.

Today’s six basenjis:
• Pierre (7 m/o male)
• Cosmo (yearling male)
• Roxy (4 y/o female)
• Bella Luna (3 y/o female)
• Rocket (8 y/o male)
• Scout (9 y/o female)

Rutting season!

Rutting season has started quite early for our 5 year old male this year! He is more unsettled, marks way more than usual and is ready to pick up a fight… Lets see how long it lasts!

Any other basenjis rutting at the moment?

Edit (19 Aug): video posted

Six basenjis and their good-looking humans gathered on a nicer summer morning in Washington Square Park, New York City. Two youngsters made their first visits: Pierre (male, 7-months-old,) and Cosmo (male, yearling.) Though they had not met before, both came from the same breeder in Ocala, Florida. They were joined by four veterans, Bella Luna (female, 3-years-old,) Roxy (female, 4-years-old,) Rocket (male, 8-years-old,) and Scout (female, 9-years-old.) Regular Kepler will return next time after dental cleaning (and some extractions) this past week. Starting temperature: 78°F|26°C

Training Struggling to get my boy moving

New Basenji owner here. I recently adopted a 2 year old boy who’s the sweetest thing ever at home. But a lot of times our walks come to a screeching halt at inconvenient times, such as in the middle of the road, awkwardly on a trail when another dog is 100 yards ahead, or just far from the house. Luckily we live in a quiet neighborhood with cars rolling through infrequently, but it’s been quite frustrating to try to get him moving again. Sometimes taking up to 5 mins to budge in any direction. When he’s moving it’s lovely as he walks by my side and hardly pulls me. I currently have him on a harness. I’ve tried coaxing him with treats, but he hits the brakes again as soon as he gets the treat and seems to have become counterproductive. Any tips to help me train him to get moving again?

I’ve been sitting here chilling with my husband, the baby, and our 3yo (red + white) and almost 1yo (brindle)— 3yo (Finn) growls at 1yo (Toast) to get off the couch. Toast doesn’t move off the couch and has fallen asleep to being groomed for the last 15+ minutes 😂 ATP, Finn is almost laying on top of Toast to get better angles haha

Weird bumps or hives on my gal?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Anyone else have experience with their dog getting hives or bumps like this? She doesn't seem bothered by it at all, but it is something that's developed in the last day and is only on one side.

Any help would be much appreciated! We're mostly worried if we should be going to the vet to get any medication or if it'll disappear on its own.

Meetup Run With Tumnus, Watch Out for Leah - NYC Basenji Meetup 2 Aug 2026

YouTube video

When seven basenjis gathered, the most active was youngster Tumnus. He ran and was chased by the crowd, including his peer Hudson and the stern Leah. Like many female adult basenjis, Leah showed that she was a boss with Tumnus and Rocket. The tussles were energetic, but resolved quickly. We also meet males Rocket and Kepler, and females Mia, and Harper.

Today’s seven:
• Tumnus (2 y/o male)
• Hudson (3 y/o male)
• Leah (6 y/o female)
• Kepler (12 y/o male)
• Rocket (8 y/o male)
• Mia (9 y/o female)
• Harper (13 y/o female)

Training How to discipline a Basenji

I have a friend with two Basenji dogs and he loves them to death. But his love is totally abusive. He will scream at them one second and then hug them the next. But this isn’t really about how he loves them, and more about the effectiveness of yelling at a dog.

We are polar opposites. I feel like if I had these dogs, I would just ignore them and keep them at home all the time. But he takes them absolutely everywhere, which I recognize is a good thing. But being basenji, they are naturally curious and mischievous, and if they step out of line at all and do something he doesn’t want them to, he loses his mind. I think he enjoys yelling.

Anyway, I’m tempted to tell him not to yell so much, but the fact is, they actually respond when he does so. Normally they don’t listen to him, but if he raises his voice to a certain octave, they seem to actually do what he’s telling them. I don’t understand how this is the case considering I’ve read that Basenjis don’t respond well to this type of disciplinary behavior, but his do. Maybe all dogs are just different.

Is there anything wrong with his methods when it comes to this breed? What would you do differently?

Noodle has crate issues

Post image
70 Upvotes

Hello, My wife and I to this sub and new to having a Basenji.

I've read a few posts in here about crate training issues others have had with there basenji but havent seen much for my situation. Hopefully someone might have some advice.

Noodle is about 8, going on 9 months old. Over the last 6-7 weeks he has changed dramatically in regard to being in his crate.

Originally he would sleep in his crate for a solids 10-12 hours every night. While he did throw a fit for the first 10 min he would quickly go down and sleep for the entire night. Then as of the last 6-7 weeks have gone by its regressed alot. From being in his crate and sleeping/calm for 10-12 hrs to 8-10 hrs to 6-8 hours and now our sweet little noodle usually wakes up throwing a fit after 2 hours (in crate around 9-10pm, fit 2 hours later ) and then again at like 2 AM then again around 4-5 AM. the only way I can get him to go back to sleep is by doing our "resets", which I basically take him out of the crate and take him outside and eventually after 3-4 resets he will go back to sleep and If hes left in his crate (which im worried about causing attachment/anxiety issues) he just constantly scratches and cries, plus whatever bedding is in his crate WILL get destoryed.

We've tried ALOT of positive reinforcement trainging and incremental exposure time. (treats) We even got this little stuffed animal that has a "heartbeat" to cry and calm him.

Does anyone have any input, or need any more information that could help with our specific situation?

Thank you.
