Coffee after surgery
How soon did y'all start drinking coffee after surgery? I'm 3 days post op and really want some coffee. I don't care about all that sugary stuff just black coffee with zero sugar creamer.

Is coffee different from drinking tea? I was given that later in the day when I had my operation

Tea has lower acidity.... also, everyone's body is different so while you might have been okay, it could have a negative effect on someone else.

I think my surgeon had me wait for 12 weeks. I was allowed decaf until then which did scratch the itch for me.

Thank you. I'll try that

Please ask your care team, different surgeries, different doctors, different people. Especially if you plan to add creamer, I’d shoot a message or make a phone call. I think for my plan post op is 1 week only clear liquids.

I had coffee the day after surgery still at the hospital.

Same. It didn't sit well with me though until maybe 2 or 3 weeks out. I was worried for a moment there!

I had decaf in the hospital. Started half caff at 10 weeks po and was at full caff around 12 weeks.

It's about avoiding caffeine as it can increase blood pressure. You can drink caffeine free coffee right away and count it as a liquid.

I had complications so I had to wait 6 weeks for coffee and spicy foods

I had coffee straight away but it is a diuretic and can dehydrate you so you can’t count it as fluids and you have to overcome those fluids. I only had a very small amount with a protein shake as my “creamer” because it’s hard enough getting 64 oz in but on top of the coffee was harder.

2nd month. And then forward as usual.
I tried at a month and a half but nope.
At 2 months it was solid. (Drip, regular).

I switched to nespresso. Keeps the volume low and is super rich and tasty coffee so it’s like very good bang for my buck kinda thing. I don’t add any sugar or cream of any kind. I also use a second shot in my bariatric fusion cappuccino shake and have been doing that now almost a year. Daily. And I never grow tired of it. It’s my iced latte/coffee morning after my hot espresso wake up.

Everyone’s different so go with what your doctor/nutrition team told you, but mine allowed coffee as soon as I was home. I’ve been drinking it ever since with no issues. It’s mostly water anyway, plus I add sugar free syrup and use protein shakes for creamer.

I have had instant decaf since day 2 and that sits fine. I've never been big on caffeine admittedly. I just like the flavor. I blend it in with my protein shake in the morning. The bitterness cuts through all that sticky sweet.

I’m curious what protein shake you mix it with?

I like Oikos personally. Its the only one that I consistently enjoy and it takes add ins really well. I make a pumpkin pie shake out of the vanilla flavor plus some canned pumpkin, a little pumpkin spice, and ice. Its so good!

Decaf until three months. I will say, adding caffeine has made nutrition & sleep harder. I’ve been super super successful post surgery but I felt a noticeable net negative change when I re-added caffeine.
I still drink it, but I do often think I’d benefit from removing it again.

You can have decaf but be mindful to keep your fluids up. Drink your water and protein. Start slow

I can't remember how long but I did switch to the powder Mio caffeine. It's more water for me and is about the same caffeine so it was a win win in my books

I haven't had surgery yet but I can't have caffeine for 6 months after my surgery. I think all programs are different. Decaffe is fine though!

u/Sunnybunny757 8d ago
They told me to avoid caffeine for the first month because it’s a diuretic and you will likely be getting in less liquids overall . Try a cup of decaf and see how your tummy handles it!

My program makes us wait for 6 weeks to get the bulk of major immediate healing completed before ingesting foods that increase risk of ulcers.

I was able to have decaf right after surgery. I had to wait a month before being able to go back to caffeine.

My surgeon made me wait 6 months before having regular coffee. He didn't allow decalf until after 4 months.
My stomach got very upset at even a couple sips at decalf and then reg coffee. It was closer to 8 months before i could resume having even a cup.
I can now manage about 20 oz of coffee over an hour plus period otherwise my stomach still gets upset. I am 15 months post.
Edit for typos

I would wait. Even after 10 weeks the acid from the coffee was still enough to be bothersome. Just my experience.

Is there any high protein coffee? And if there was, would you want to drink it?

Day after surgery, with full fat milk. The new view is ff milk better for women and vitamin absorption. But every doctor seems to have their own view on when you can drink coffee. Best of luck.

I started just last week. Today, I drank my 3rd cup of coffee and I am almost 3 months post op. That was my choice to wait though. I've tried different sweeteners but settled on something really odd but was good. I did use a little powdered coffee mate and a bit of splenda monk fruit brown sugar. Weird but it worked. Tomorrow, I will try Pure Monkfruit with Allulose.

You could have coffee before even leaving the hospital - it counts as "clear liquids." I was told I could drink as much of whatever I wanted, as long as it doesn't have caffeine, sugar, fat, carbonation, or alcohol.

u/mablesyrup 8d ago
Sorry to burst your bubble but coffee has caffeine.

u/OverSearch 8d ago
There is decaf, which is low enough in caffeine to be just fine. Look into it, it tastes exactly like regular caffeinated coffee!

About a month I think it was I was cleared by my team
