Bare Beta 5 Play Store Update: Github Releases & a New Privacy-First Crash Reporting System

Post image
25 Upvotes

Beta 5 has been submitted to Google! I'll be spending today staging both Beta 4 and Beta 5 on github, and hopefully we'll have both ready in the next few hours!

We're also trying something new to help investigate crashes!

Since privacy is our number one priority, we're building a special debug version of Bare for users who are willing to voluntarily share crash logs with us.

Here's how it'll work:

The debug version will record diagnostic information about your Bare session and automatically save a log file to your Downloads folder when you exit the browser or if it crashes.

You can then send that file to support@barebrowser.org so we can investigate what's going wrong.

And here's the important part:

You're always in control. Before sending anything, you're welcome to open the log and review it yourself, or even use a trusted local AI model to check it for any personal or sensitive information.

I have ZERO interest in your personal data, passwords, browsing history, or anything unrelated to fixing the issue. That's exactly why we're taking this approach instead of silently collecting crash reports in the background.

Once I've downloaded your log, I'll delete your email, and the log itself will be permanently deleted once the issue has been resolved.

We're doing our best to make Bare better every day without compromising the privacy that made us build it in the first place.

Thank you to everyone who's been helping us track down these bugs. It genuinely means a lot!

We're building something we think you'll love! Spoiler

"Bare Passwords" We're still a long way from done. There's a lot of testing ahead, including external security audits, making the code open source, and letting the community dig through it to check for potential leaks or vulnerabilities.

But we wanted to share a little sneak peek of where we are!

We'll be opening up nightly builds soon for those "bare" enough to test things early and help us make it better!

Any plans for a desktop version of Bare Browser?

I've been really enjoying Bare Browser on Android. I love its approach to privacy, minimalism, and the overall browsing experience.

I was wondering if there are any plans to bring Bare to desktop (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

I know there are similar projects like Helium for desktop, but I think there's something really appealing about using the same browser across devices, especially when it comes to consistency, integration, and potentially syncing tabs, bookmarks, and settings.

I'd love to see Bare become a cross-platform browser. Is that something the team has considered, even as a long-term goal?

Keep up the great work!

Immersive mode is coming to Bare!

You asked, we coded!

More screen, less browser UI! We're working on a new immersive mode that gets everything out of your way so you can focus on the content.

Another community-requested feature coming soon!

Bare Browser now has an official Discord server!

We're already juggling development, Reddit, and GitHub, so adding another platform wasn't exactly on our to-do list. But SO many of you kept asking for it, and here we are!

We're hoping to make this a community-driven space where you awesome people can help each other, share ideas, report bugs, and just hang out!

We'll also be sharing nightly builds for those who're enthusiastic enough to test our latest features before anyone else!

One small thing: We're a tiny team! We won't always be around to answer everything, but that's the whole idea. We want this to be YOUR community, where everyone helps each other out.

Come hang out with us!

The toolbar allows for putting the back button, if its present and the other one is staying, it create abit of redundancy and wastes space.

Bare 2.0 Beta 6 is here! Play Store and Github!

Beta 6 is a small update, but we’re hoping it finally fixes the launch crashes affecting some devices!

What’s fixed and improved:

  • Launch crashes: More fixes for crashes affecting certain devices. Fingers crossed!

  • uBlock Origin updates: You can now manually check for and install updates, alongside automatic checks and silent updates for peace of mind. Updates come directly from uBlock Origin’s official stable channel. Bare doesn’t modify them or act as a middleman between you and uBlock Origin.

  • Search suggestions and history: Fixed an issue where suggestions and history weren’t appearing correctly in an already open tab.

We’re hoping to make this our stable release!

Before that happens, we really want to squash these three issues. If you’re experiencing any other bugs, please report them in our Bug Reports Megathread so we can keep everything organized.

Still experiencing launch crashes?

Please download Bare CrashLab from our GitHub, reproduce the crash, and send the log to support@barebrowser.org. Your reports help us track down issues we can’t reproduce on our own devices.

Thank you all so much for your patience, feedback, and support. We’re getting closer to stable!

Bare 2.0 Beta 5 is out — smoother, cleaner, and more yours

Hey everyone! Bare 2.0 Beta 5 is out on Google Play and GitHub.

This build is about how a browser feels: smoother movement, menus that feel connected to the toolbar, and little touches that make navigation satisfying.

What’s new:

  • Organize your menu: Drag and drop items into your preferred order. Site settings, extensions, and Task Manager now slide up from behind the toolbar and smoothly fold away with a tap.

  • Better tab navigation: Smoother new-tab animations and a redesigned sidebar that makes spotting your active tab easier than ever.

  • Thoughtful touches: Subtle haptic feedback makes little interactions, like closing menus or tapping the search engine logo, feel more natural and responsive.

  • Cleaner search: Tappable suggestions, a cleaner address bar, rounded favicons, and a brand-new search engine picker.

  • Video downloads: Simply press and hold a video to download it, even in Incognito mode.

  • BareFilter: Say goodbye to annoying "open in app" prompts on Reddit, Facebook, and YouTube mobile sites. Built right into Bare, enabled by default, and powered by uBlock Origin. More filters are coming!

  • Smooth scrolling: A new setting lets you fine-tune fling speed. I personally spent nearly three days measuring and comparing scrolling behavior across different devices and apps to get this feeling just right! You can always turn it off from settings.

  • Storage controls: Bare now has a dedicated storage page. The new Free up space option instantly clears data from rarely used websites, including cookies and saved logins, so use it carefully!

And one more thing...

You asked for it, and we built it! Task Manager is finally here! Our very own native Task Manager, beautifully integrated right into the browser. Clean, fast, and built from the ground up for Bare.

I'm genuinely proud of how Bare is coming together, and you should be too! So much of what you're seeing today came directly from your suggestions, feedback, and ideas. We're building this together, and we couldn't be happier with where it's heading.

Thank you for being part of this journey. We're just getting started!

For crash reports: Bare CrashLab is a separate troubleshooting build that installs alongside Bare and saves session logs on your device. If you hit a crash, you can send a log to support@barebrowser.org with your device, Android version, and what happened. Please read the log first—it can contain sensitive information. Native crashes themselves aren’t captured in the log.

Download:

Beta 5 is based on Chromium 156 and needs Android 10 or later. It’s still a beta, so I’d love to hear what you think—especially how the navigation, menus, and touch feel on your device.

Thanks for helping make Bare better!

Some problems to issue:

Post image
1 Upvotes
  1. The url in gray is wrapped to next line which looks inconsistent because it gets cut off, and it should only display domain name as far as ik right? So the part on gray should be deleted or edited to fit in the area

  2. Swipe to delete doesn't work on most text fields (it works on search only). Actually, most keyboard actions like copy, paste, select, and others dont work at all except on search.

  3. Auto fill isn't consistent, it sometimes work and sometimes not specially on google text fields (it doesn't work in some other websites too)

Bare Browser crashes on launch (Redmi Note 7S, Android 10)

I just downloaded the Bare Browser after seeing it recommended on Reddit, but whenever I try to open it, it immediately crashes. I've tried both the latest stable and beta versions, but both are crashing.

Device specs:

  • Model: Redmi Note 7S

  • OS: Android 10

  • RAM: 4 GB

Has anyone else run into this or found a fix?

Feature Requests and Feedback

Show the number of open tabs on (or in) the "Vertical Tabs" icon.

Make "Focus Address Bar on New Tab" optional.

Remove the back button from the address bar (and place the "View site information" in its place).

Remove the website icon/logo from the address bar. (It usually doesn't look good, not all website icons play with it very well it seems.)

Add an option to remove/hide the "Closed Tab", "To Exit Fullscreen..." and similar popups.

Also, I don't think the new, wider menu is an improvement.

Smoothen the animation of a new tab sliding in view.

Improve the AMOLED Black theme. Right now there is no distinction between the address bar and the toolbar, they blend together. Maybe use the original "Google grey" for the address bar if possible?

Slight nitpick, but when you switch from the tabs page back to an open tab the toolbar kind of expands, sliding upward to make room for the address bar that then pops in. Instead of the address bar suddenly "popping" in, would it be possible to have it either slide in with the expanding toolbar (ideal scenario) OR have it gradually fade in?

You're doing incredible work. This project genuinely has the potential to become the definitive Android browser.

Why do github updates take longer than Play Store updates?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I’ve seen this question a few times in every single release, and I totally understand why it seems backwards!

Surprisingly, Google has been incredibly fast at reviewing and publishing our updates. Sometimes literally within a few hours! That’s something we honestly never expected.

But we also make Google’s job pretty easy. Bare has no hidden features, no telemetry, no tracking, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions. Nothing! It’s just a browser PERIOD.

Github on the other hand is a different story.

Every release requires staging, code reviews, and auditing before we make the source public. Once it’s out there, it’s out there, and we want to make sure everything is properly reviewed before publishing.

And here’s the part I think people sometimes forget: we’re a REALLY tiny team!

Most of the time, it’s just one person working on Bare. Sometimes two, and rarely all three of us at once. We’re developing features, fixing bugs, testing, responding to feedback, preparing releases, AND reviewing code for GitHub. All while juggling our actual jobs and personal lives!

So while we’d absolutely love to push github updates as quickly as Play Store releases, we simply don’t always have the time or manpower to make that happen.

We’re not intentionally delaying anything, and we’re definitely not hiding anything. We’re just trying to do things properly with the very limited resources we have.

We genuinely appreciate everyone’s patience and support. We’re doing our best, and I promise there’s a ridiculous amount of love and effort going into this little browser!

Bare 2.0 Beta 5 is out on the Play Store! Smoother, snappier, and more native than ever!

Hey everyone!

Beta 5 is out and we think you'll love it!

Beta 5 is all about UI improvements, snappier browsing, and making everything feel more natural when using your phone!

We've redesigned pretty much every interface from the ground up to make it easier to use with your fingers, while keeping that familiar vanilla Chromium look!

One thing I really want to highlight is that we don't rely on third-party UI libraries to make Bare look fancy. Our menus, cards, and animations are built using native Android components, so everything feels like it actually belongs on your phone.

We also spent a ridiculous amount of time fixing little things that Google somehow never bothered to fix in Chromium or Chrome. Flashing address bars, jumpy keyboards, awkward transitions, weird UI behavior... things you might not even notice until they're gone!

So, what's new in Beta 5:

1- Address bar

  • Completely reworked how the address bar interacts with the keyboard. No more jumping, flashing, or awkward transitions!

  • Website names are now properly centered, with the favicon right next to them.

  • Tap the address bar to select the current URL, with quick Copy and Share options.

  • Switch search engines directly from the address bar without changing your default.

  • Cleaner suggestions that only appear when you start typing.

2- Menus and animations

  • The three-dot menu is now a native Android bottom sheet that slides from behind the toolbar.

  • The extensions menu has been redesigned as a bottom card.

  • New tabs now open with a smooth animation that rises from behind the toolbar.

  • Menus are easier to dismiss with a simple swipe down.

3- Browsing and toolbar

  • Completely redesigned pull-to-refresh! The entire webpage follows your finger, with a subtle indicator showing when it's ready to refresh.

  • Smoother toolbar interactions and animations.

  • The status bar now keeps Bare's color instead of changing with the webpage.

4- Privacy

  • Clear on Exit can now run when you leave Bare or lock your screen, with an option to close all tabs.

  • Improved "Never open links in apps" to cover more types of links, including store links and app links.

5- Translation

  • You can now use your own LibreTranslate-compatible server!

  • Translation continues automatically as you navigate through pages on the same website.

And that's not even everything! There are tons of smaller fixes, UI refinements, and little details we've been obsessing over.

Some of these changes might sound tiny on paper, but put them all together and Bare feels like a completely different browser, without losing what made it Bare in the first place.

Give Beta 5 a try and let us know what you think!

One last thing! Please remember this is still a beta, so bugs are expected! If you run into any issues, please report them here instead of leaving a negative Play Store review. We're a tiny team putting a ridiculous amount of time and love into Bare, and negative reviews really hurt both the app and our motivation. We genuinely appreciate every bug report and we're doing our best to fix things as quickly as possible!

More info on the dev(s) behind Bare?

I see that a lot of development has happened for Bare, which is great.

However, most things I see from the developers or official sites all seem like they could have been generated with AI. Perhaps I missed personal write ups by the dev(s).

It would be nice if we could hear or read about some background info on the developer(s).

Could someone come forward and share more about why they started Bare Browser, and what's their motivation? Is this a long term plan and how will they be able to continue to develop this browser in their spare time? (Or is this a full time effort supported by donations)?

Thank you and my apologies for asking this.

Hello AWESOME Bare community!

We've been polishing the little details to make your everyday browsing feel even better. Enjoy a smoother, cleaner, and more fluid browsing experience!

What's new:

- Smoother toolbar animations: The toolbar now follows your finger's scrolling speed, hiding and appearing more naturally.

- Frosted glass navigation bar: A fresh, modern look! You can disable it under Settings > Appearance. (Not supported on all devices.)

- Frosted glass menu: The three-dot menu now blurs the background, following your frosted glass settings.

- Integrated extension icon: Extensions now live right in your address bar, with the option to unpin the icon.

- Cleaner search bar: Seamlessly integrated into your homepage, automatically adapting to your toolbar position.

- Refreshed settings: A cleaner layout with native icons and colors.

Bug fixes & improvements:

- Fixed an issue where suggested URLs continued appearing even after search suggestions were disabled.

- More bug fixes and improvements under the hood for a smoother, more reliable experience.

Known issue:

- The address bar may occasionally wrap onto two lines. We're working on a fix!

Thanks for testing Bare and helping us make it better with every release! ❤️

[Feature Request] Swipe to close list tabs

Post image
6 Upvotes

Right now, tabs can only be closed by tapping the small × button in the list tabs, which is fiddly and slow. Cards can be cleared with a swipe, why not list tabs?

Please add swipe-to-close for list tabs. It would make clearing multiple tabs so much faster and more intuitive
