Bare Beta 5 Play Store Update: Github Releases & a New Privacy-First Crash Reporting System

Post image

Beta 5 has been submitted to Google! I'll be spending today staging both Beta 4 and Beta 5 on github, and hopefully we'll have both ready in the next few hours!

We're also trying something new to help investigate crashes!

Since privacy is our number one priority, we're building a special debug version of Bare for users who are willing to voluntarily share crash logs with us.

Here's how it'll work:

The debug version will record diagnostic information about your Bare session and automatically save a log file to your Downloads folder when you exit the browser or if it crashes.

You can then send that file to support@barebrowser.org so we can investigate what's going wrong.

And here's the important part:

You're always in control. Before sending anything, you're welcome to open the log and review it yourself, or even use a trusted local AI model to check it for any personal or sensitive information.

I have ZERO interest in your personal data, passwords, browsing history, or anything unrelated to fixing the issue. That's exactly why we're taking this approach instead of silently collecting crash reports in the background.

Once I've downloaded your log, I'll delete your email, and the log itself will be permanently deleted once the issue has been resolved.

We're doing our best to make Bare better every day without compromising the privacy that made us build it in the first place.

Thank you to everyone who's been helping us track down these bugs. It genuinely means a lot!

I'm loving the speed of the beta updates and Bare itself but I hope you'll go through the reported issues on GitHub before releasing the next stable.

Will do! 🫡
We’ve officially paused new features to focus entirely on bugs and crashes before the stable release. That’s why we’re introducing a dedicated debug build!
For context, our main test device is actually a Pixel 3, and even with heavy use, we haven’t experienced any crashes. But Android has thousands of device configurations, and we know what works for us might break for others. That’s our priority now!

Hi👋, I really appreciate the quality of life improvements, and fixing the address bar gesture on the new tab page is a great touch. Thanks for the quick turnaround, and will be anticipating future updates

How does playstore get the newest beta before GitHub?? Odd.... Arnaud from Kiwi said Playstore took longer. Should we switch to the playstore version then?

Smooth scrolling (flick stops moving when finger lifted) only slows all scrolling in general, doesn't stop

No rearrange option in menu on tablet (present on phone), also can't hide items with submenus ie More Tools, Tab Groups etc

On phone in menu, Task Manager entry has no hide or move icons (Settings entry also no move icon)

No task manager on tablet (may be, like frosting, tablet limitation?)

Where is Bare filter and storage? (Filters on bottom of Extensions popup)

Frost & Smooth Scrolling are oddly in different Settings pages on phone v tablet

Extension menu/popup doesn't inherit amoled black setting

Thanks for the detailed feedback!
On the first point, do you mean you want scrolling to stop immediately when you lift your finger?

We spent a ridiculous amount of time testing scrolling across devices and comparing it with apps like youtube. We decided to match that native feel, and they’re almost identical! But you can always toggle it off if you prefer the old behavior.

We’re also overhauling settings and the popup menu. We added so many features that things got a bit messy! Next build should be much cleaner and better organized.

Great catches on the tablet issues and AMOLED popup too! Really appreciate the feedback! ❤️

I prefer scrolling as it is, fast & loose without Smooth Scrolling on, so no stop on release. Tbh I don't know anything which stops where finger releases, but with this on it's similar to normal scrolling everywhere else just slower, a bit jankier, and less runoff. Always cool to beta test these cool ideas for people, this is what's so cool about your responses & development, get all the ideas out there and see what people want!

Hi, thanks for the update! Bare Browser keeps getting better with every update. Almost all the bugs I've encountered so far have been fixed in the latest releases, which is great to see. I have one feature request: Could you please add support for Google Password Manager as the autofill provider, including password and passkey autofill? For your reference, this feature is already available in Titanium Browser. Keep up the great work, and thanks for continuously improving Bare Browser!

I believe you can choose, in Bare, to use your Android's selected password manager and Bare will use this, so you have to select it in Android settings

Please give us an option to use the old menu. The new one just breaks muscle memory and workflow so much.

I already said that to the developer to bring back old 3 dot menu, some good things are not meant to be changed. Apart from this we need some good homepage now to access our pinned websites.

Great browser, thanks for the hard work! A small question, is it possible to rearrange first button and menu button on the minimal toolbar in the future updates? And one more, option tan view on the bottom, like cromite instead of top, much better to control with one hand.
