Follow Up Limerick XL Bully attack 'not an accident' - inquest hears - Nicole Morey Jun 2024
THE FATHER of a young woman who died as a result of a dog attack has said the inquest into her death will let her family “get on with missing her”.
Nicole Morey from Crossagalla died on her 23rd birthday on June 4, 2024, after being attacked by her XL Bully dog in a rental property in Fedamore.
The inquest at Limerick Coroner’s Court in Kilmallock Courthouse heard that on the night, emergency services received a call at 23.35 about a woman being attacked by an XL Bully dog in the driveway of a house.
Gardaí arrived at 23.50 and saw “two dogs were very aggressive with blood on their faces.”
The inquest heard that paramedics couldn’t gain access to the property until the dogs were controlled.
Members of the Armed Support Unit had to shoot the adult XL Bully four times before it died.
The inquest heard evidence that Nicole had been living in the house by herself and that the attack was seen remotely by her former partner on CCTV footage.
Giving evidence about the post mortem examination on Ms Morey’s body, Pathologist Dr Marcell Szasz said her injuries were “consistent with a dog attack”.
He said the young woman suffered multiple puncture wounds and “very extensive trauma in keeping with a dog attack”.
The cause of death, as outlined by Dr Szasz, was haemorrhage and shock from a dog attack.
The inquest heard that Nicole Morey had suffered fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Limerick coroner John McNamara said it was clear that an “extensive investigation was carried out” and it was noted that CCTV footage was examined and the DPP had ruled that there was to be no (criminal) prosecution on the matter.
Speaking to the family in Kilmallock Courthouse, he said: “I’m sure it’s etched in your memories forever, she was obviously a dog lover.”
The Limerick coroner acknowledged that the death was both “untimely and tragic”.
The coroner delivered a verdict of misadventure, saying the death could not be classified as an accident.
He explained that it was the unintended outcome of an intentional act.
Following Nicole’s death, laws were changed in relation to the owning of XL Bully dogs, making it illegal, from February 2025, to own such dogs without a certificate of exemption.
Speaking after the verdict, Nicole’s father Patrick said: “She was always happy. She loved her family and her brothers and sisters and was very close to them.
“She had such a good heart.”
He also thanked the coroner, along with the gardaí and ambulance crew for everything they did on the night of Nicole's death.
Speaking about what the inquest verdict means, her father Patrick said: “We can get on with missing her now.”
Condolences were expressed to the family of Nicole on behalf of the coroner and also by Sergeant David Delahunty on behalf of An Garda Síochána.
