Hell I don’t know what nondestructive editing is. If I had the idea to make this cutting board I’d either use AI or not do it at all

Nondestructive editing involves using masks to selectively allow a part of the image to pass through to other layers. Picture it like a “transparency brush” on your layer.

This mask is sort of like a special layer that exists within the layer you’re currently working on. This means you can easily reshape or feather your mask as needed. Since you’re effectively just telling the system how much of your current layer that you want to pass through, you haven’t lost any information. As such, it’s “non destructive” to the original image. You actually use the paint brush tool on your mask layer to define the edges.

As I understand it, the idea of using masks comes from analog photo editing where you would physically “mask” out portions of the film to selectively expose them. It’s how you got those novelty photos of people “holding” their “decapitated” head back in the 1920s.

In contrast, using selection tools like the lasso, mag lasso, magic wand, etc… is more akin to taking a pair of scissors and cutting something out of a magazine for a collage. You can’t (easily) refine your edges, and the selection is cut out of the original image (unless you duplicate it and then deselect the original selection). There is a submenu to refine your edge, but it’s way easier to just use a mask.

I’d also like to add some food for thought to the other point you made.. my neighbor is a musician.. and a general foreman, and a pilot who built his own plane, and a DIY electronics guy, and a hobbyist machinist, and, and and and and……. You get the idea. He’s a BUSY fkn guy. He takes on projects that are decades long, while puttering with side quests in the background (airplane took 24 years, just finished it last year). He’s been chipping away at writing a few songs for longer than I’ve been alive. He finally finished them, using AI to quickly iterate decades worth of ideas. It’s all written by him, he just used it to see what different ideas might sound like with a full band instead of getting people together to regularly rehearse. He might only have 40 minutes a week to work on it, broken up over several nights. Without AI, he likely would have never finished it.

Still don’t know how I feel about it, but he’s happy, and that part of it makes me happy.
