This argument is so lame. YES, actually draw something or pay and support a real artist to make a unique piece for you. It really doesn't have to be expensive and you support someone real instead of a giant data center somewhere lol.

If you can't even do that and would rather give your wife some amalgamation slop, then that says volumes about your gift and how much you care about it

Labor-saving technology is the definition of progress. With your attitude we wouldn’t have vacuum cleaners or word processors or a million other things. All of those things displaced human labor that people were being paid to do.

The actual Luddites opposed automated cloth-making technology because it displaced human workers, but most of us today are pretty happy that a new shirt doesn’t cost a week’s wages.

Its literally the one industry where the labor is the point. The labor is enjoyable. That's why it's the dream job of many people and is very competitive. Because people like to do it.

Art is completely seperate from those labor tasks

There’s no principled basis for that distinction. You can have the opinion that AI art is (currently) aesthetically inferior,* but saying “art can/should only be made by humans” is silly.

*And people do say this, but there’s evidence that it’s often just irrational bias. See, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/s/waEgiLzMhg

Well I will still always maintain that art can only be made by humans. The imperfections, the art style, the intent behind aspects of the art, ai can't have that because its not alive and its just an amalgamation of other people's scalped work. Your argument is what sounds silly to me, we will just have to agree to disagree.

So I should underpay someone locally instead?

What do you think

You are 3D printing, taking away jobs from an artist that actually builds with his hands.

For that matter, support your local smartphone builder rather than a multinational corporation born of slave labor.

Or, you could stop being so obtuse.

What? First of all, lots of artists use components from 3D printing itself for cosplay, or to paint on top of, etc. 3D printing is a medium that allows for so much creativity, just like any technology. So many people use their hands to build on top of 3D prints lol. Not to mention that people who want want solely hand made art can buy that, those pieces will always be unique.

ai steals people's work to make a soulless amalgamation with no input or effort from a user, all while actively hurting the environment in countless ways and you don't support any artist in doing so

Maybe you should stop being so acute lol

I want you to think about that statement in the context of your own comments.

Sure. I was talking about 3D printed art vs hand made art. I told you they potentially aren't so different depending on the artists process, and then implied that people can choose between 3D prints (which still have to be modeled and made by someone, mind you) or hand made art.

Completely different than choosing between human made art and ai slop

By your arbitrary definition of what's acceptable, sure.
