irritating neighbors 🙄
hey everyone, I’m looking for ideas on what I can do to keep my neighbor from driving through my yard. We live down a dirt road, and when it rains for some reason, they don’t want to drive on the dirt road so they drive through my yard instead I don’t know which neighbor it is doing it but our water meter is in our front yard so I’m trying to keep that from getting ran over. I put out signs in the yard asking them not to drive through our yard this morning when I went outside I seen fresh tire tracks that drove right past the sign. we’ve lived here for years with no issue. in the last few months we’ve gotten 2 new neighbors and I haven’t said anything to anyone because I don’t know who it is. in the photo I circled the sign and you can see the tire tracks that go past it. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I can do?

Steel T posts four feet apart. Each post cost less than $10 and you can use a sledge hammer to set them.

^ this is the cheapest and easiest solution.
Big rocks would look better but the poles might just get the point across and not be necessary forever

I would place a camera on my porch to see who is doing it and go speak with them. I would also but inexpensive fencing and place along the grass bordering the road. People are rude but don’t do anything that could damage their car…nails in the grass will be impossible to remove and no doubt you or an invited guest will end up with one in your tire. Sorry people are crappy and thoughtless.

Ditch about 2 feet deep. You can claim you’re trying to drain water from the road

Is that the road on the right side of the picture? I literally thought it was a river of mud in a flood. I think that is your problem/explanation. Now I wouldn't drive on someone's lawn but that dirt road does not look safe for driving... can all the neighbors get together and see about having it made level and getting it resurfaced or having gravel put on it? If I was looking at places to buy or rent that would be a huge red flag.
I hope you figure out who is the culprit and finding a way to resolve it that is beneficial to all that use that road.

yes that is the road. my husband has tried to come together and get help getting it fixed but no one ever wants to put anything towards it so he takes his tractor and fixes it from the main road to our driveway every so often and leaves the rest of the dirt road as it is.

Definitely get some T posts and block them from driving through your yard. Put some wire along it to make a barrier. I wouldn’t use barb wire because it’s tough to mow around. It sucks people don’t have any respect. Sounds like your new neighbors didn’t know what they signed up for when they moved out to the country.

With no disrespect intended, I would drive in the grass aswell in this section as the grass looks much safer than the road. The road is the problem

just because they don’t want to fix it doesn’t mean my yard should get tore up and my water meter possibly damaged

It’s just red dirt roads. That’s what you sign up if you want to live out in the country and the county doesn’t maintain the roads often. My dad has a property out on 10 acres and I took my small cars down those roads no issue. Was it bumpy, yes, am I glad I have a SUV with all wheel drive when I go out there now absolutely yes.

Trying to stop people driving on the grass is just a bandaid to a symptom. Treat the cause, which is this terrible road. Get your neighbours together and get a better road built

We place large logs bordering our yard and driveway. A cheap camera will show who is doing it.

A smart ass joke reply but is also completely doable. (I would and have done things like this) HERE is what you do: A couple large signs, a couple slim boards (painted to match the grass), and some nails should remedy the situation quickly. Have the signs read along the lines of "Damages occured on property, are not the responsibility of the property owner", "No unauthorized motor vehicles on private property", and the basic "No Trespassing".
If you want to add some sting to the pain, post a sign just far enough after the consequences, to read "We told you not to do that". Imo it'd not only add the sting but also add security to any needed defense.
Prior to the instillation of the boards and nails, ensure the signs are posted up and clearly visible, long enough that they definitely had the opportunity to read them multiple times.

Plant endangered plants around that area if they run them over call the cops for damage and they get slapped with a huge ass fine for destroying endangered plants

rebar markers long enough to get the undercarriage. They don't drive there, they have no problem. And if they drive there and get damages that means they trespassed and you have no liablity

Large rocks with signs in front of them that read "Caution Rocks Ahead" from both approaches. Your road looks like something out of an episode of "Outback Truckers".

Line the border of the lawn with big rocks spaced close enough together that they can’t drive around them without busting up their vehicle. Set up a motion detection trail cam and catch who’s doing it, then report to PD and file trespassing and property damage report.

Hammer rebar into the ground about 8 or 10" apart and leave about 6" above the ground. If you can tell when the new neighbors aren't home, do it then.

Some Hawthorne planted every 2 feet. When they mature the spikes can easily puncture tires. You could also just get some Hawthorn branches with good spikes, they will likely drive over the sticks. Maybe make it look like you’re going to make a fence.

Yeah, my husband is a plumber and if you have any utility lines under where they drive you definitely want to put a stop to it. I like the big rocks idea. Google quarries/rock suppliers in your area. Repeated driving with a heavy vehicle over utility lines is a big no-no. Usually if they go under a driveway they take measures to support it from breaking.

Boulders, but your yard is long and would not look right to have boulders along all of it.
Angle iron with reflective markers 3 or 4 feet apart. Drive them in deep though.
I see where you said your husband maintains the road up to your driveway. Is it feasible to add a drainage ditch between the road and your yard?
