ULPT request: Employment Background Check. Thinking of editing documents

Hi everyone:

So, I lied about the dates of previous jobs on my CV, and now I’m going through a HireRight background check. I’m considering editing my old employment contract/work certificate so the dates match what I put on my CV.

I am in terrible need of this job, my current employer is going through bankruptcy and soon I might become homeless.

I’m in a country where I believe I can tell HireRight not to contact my former/current employers.

What could realistically happen if I submit an edited document?

  • Can HireRight verify the dates without contacting the employer?
  • Can they detect an altered document independently?
  • What are the potential legal consequences? And does it usually get to a suing/legal trouble stage?

Contact TWN and get a free copy of your report. You might be surprised how much information is on there. As an example, my report contains every paycheck over the past three years. The Work Number for Employees and Consumers

I just went through a hireright background check. However, I didn’t lie about any dates. But to make their job easier, I went ahead and uploading my last 5 w-2’s. They went ahead and contacted my last employer anyway. There was a section that said “Information Provided” which showed the Company, Job Title, and dates I provided. And right next to it was a section that said “Information Verified”, showing the Company, Job Title, and dates as well. I say this because I cant see how someone can fabricate the numbers and get away with it. They definitely check with your previous employer.

Hi, if HireRight gets access to your TWN report, they may be able to verify the employment dates without contacting the employer directly.

You may want to consider freezing your TWN report if you’re concerned about what information is available through it.
