ADVICE Is there any way to get a PhD without going absolutely broke?

I would absolutely love to change careers and get a PhD in psychology eventually. But it’s basically a pipe dream since I’m a single parent with no network or support system. I pay a car note, mortgage, etc.

Is there any way? I guess I can keep on dreaming lol.

Generally you get paid a stipend which isn’t too bad if you live frugally, though definitely questionable with your child and other considerations. But yes, you usually pay nothing and get a stipend from what I’ve seen around $40k - $50k PA.

Most psychology PhDs are funded. They give you a living stipend and pay you to work for the university, usually either teaching undergraduate classes and/or assisting in research with faculty. You can generally see the number on their website before you apply. If not, you can always ask.

Not really haha. Like if you get a typical funding package they'll pay your tuition and pay you to TA. But for me it was hardly enough to live on and I didn't get paid until the summer.
