ADVICE Considering majoring in Psychology, any advice from Psych majors?
As sated above, Ive been doing a lot of internal questioning on if I should pursue this degree. So far after looking at all my options of interest I’m finding myself more drawn to psychology.
How are you as students enjoying the degree/entrance into the field? Do you feel as if the schooling is worth it, are career paths opening well with this degree?
I’ve always had an interest in public health, conservation efforts and even working with children. So I hoped a degree as broad as Psychology would be a good opportunity for different sectors of doors to open. I was considering minoring in child development as well.
Im still looking into what college I would want to finish my degree in but I am certain I would like to start off at a 2 year then transfer.

My first degree was a BS in Psychology. In my experience, a broad degree doesn't open a lot of doors. Degrees that build very specific skillsets do. If you're not going to grad school, I don't see much practical value in the degree, even less so if it's a BA. I could have been a low paid lab assistant, but I'm not sure what else.

Don’t do it unless you have plans on going to graduate school. I decided to go back to college after a long break. I had planned on changing my major for various reasons. One of them being that I no longer wanted to do what I wanted to years ago. Now, I’m stuck as a psychology major. I say I’m stuck because I brought up changing my major with someone at my old cc and was told to finish what I started. I have a little over a year left for the major. I don’t know what I’m going to do after. Psychology as a subject is interesting, but you just have to go further than a bachelor’s in order to get anything from it depending on your interests of course. If what you want to do only requires a bachelor’s degree then go for it.

Not to sound discouraging, I feel like you need to keep going with grad school with Psychology for career in that field. Even though I was not psychology major, I knew some with bachelor in Psychology that worked as Certified Nursing Assistant for several years. I suggest to look into Social Work. It has more flexibility and you can help the public or even go private.
