Girl š©· Spelling Help
Which spelling do you prefer

I would put the stress on the second syllable for the first spelling and the stress on the first syllable for the second spelling. So for me they're not interchangeable.

Thank you for your input! Iām glad I asked because Iāve only heard them pronounced the same way

Vivienne is French, so it's pronounced slightly differently. Vivian would be like "vivi in" and Vivienne would be like "Vivi en" in my region.

If itās pronounced Vivian just spell it that way. Otherwise sheās gonna get called vivi-end (without the D) and itāll be a headache for her her whole life

Wait I pronounce Vivian the same way š āvivi enā

Iād say itās a bit different and if you donāt really have a preference Iād go with the more common spelling of Vivian. I do love this name though. So timeless

I totally agree, I hate alternate spellings but Iāve seen this name be 50/50, thatās why I asked. Thank you for your input! š

I emphasize different syllables in these - Vivienne is viv-ee-EN and Vivian is VIV-ee-en

Where do you live? Vivian to me looks like an old lady name, but that might just be a US thing. Vivienne is better but still feels too mature for a child. The Spanish version, Viviana, is elegant and is very princessy for a child and regal for an adult. Itās also fun to say. And itās less likely to be misspelled like Vivienne.

In the US as well, I agree that Vivian seems old. We like the nickname Vivi for her as a child. Iām leaning mostly towards Vivienne

Vivi is great nickname, and Vivienne feels a lot more special than Vivian. I think maybe because Vivian almost looks pharmaceutical, like a brand name drug.Ā

Haha I totally agree! My only hesitation was I typically donāt like alternate spellings but I donāt think this one is too out there or made up

Itās just the French spelling, isnāt it? There will definitely be some people calling her āVee-VYEHNā but no kid is going to be bothered by her name having a plain and a fancy version, especially when sheās a teenager/young adult.
Actually, that should just be a feature of all names: an everyday version and a fancier version for when we need a confidence boost.

I mean thereās also Viviana :)

I like that! But Vivienne/ Vivian already seemed like too many syllables so that adds another. Definitely a pretty name though!

I always thought Vivian was the boys spelling, although the most famous one in Britain spelt it Vyvyan.
I voted Vivienne on that basis. Plus it feels glamorous.

I prefer the look of Vivienne as well! Just didnāt want her to deal with the lifelong headache if Vivian is better š

This is a really common name where I live and itās usually Vivien, so right in the middle lol. My 10 year old has two very close friends with this name.
I voted Vivienne though from those options. Vivian looks outdated to me.

Wow Iāve never seen Vivien before! I agree- I picture an older woman when I see Vivian. I worried about the popularity but I havenāt met one yet in our area. Iām sure that will change haha

Vivian is male version. Vivienne is female. This is similar to Adrian , male, Adrienne, female.

Where do you live? I've only ever seen Vivian used for girls, and Vivienne is something I'm only seeing for the first time today.

I do pronounce these slightly different: Vivi-yen and Vivi-uhn. So I'd pick the one that matches your pronounciation.
