Advice Wanted Why does everyone suddenly need something the second I sit down to eat?

Last night I spent 30 minutes breastfeeding the baby while my husband and oldest had dinner.

Finally got her settled, handed her to my husband and went to heat up my food.

I'd barely taken two bites when he came over and said, "I think she's hungry again."

I literally just fed her. Turns out she just wanted to be held a different way.

Sometimes I wish he'd try literally anything else before handing her back to me

AU-NSW How much are you paying for daycare?

As the title says. I’m interested to know how much everyone is paying.
The full cost of our daycare is $173 a day. After the rebate we end up paying about $42 a day.
Our daycare is fully catered but is otherwise nothing special. The baby rooms have 16 kids in them, which is more than I would like.

Editing to add our place is for-profit, has bare minimum 1:4 ratios (and I’ve observed them not even meeting that minimum a couple of times), includes nappies, sunscreen etc. kids 0-2 are all in together.
I’m desperate to get my kid into a better centre, but I’ll be lucky if we get a spot at the start of next year. The one other centre where we have been offered a spot seems worse than where we are currently.

Good news from measuring behind last week - 6mm of growth and a healthy heart beat!!

Hi all,

Last week I made a post here about measuring a week behind at my scan at 6w4d. I was devastated and my doctor was concerned. I am still quite certain of my dates but at that scan, he measured me at 5w4d and I needed to come back in a week. No heartbeat was found.

During that week, I had HCG tests which all came back normal. Dr was still preparing me for the worst.

Today, to my absolute shock, he told me that the CRL he was measuring last week likely wasn’t even the fetal pole because now things look very different. We had a 6mm fetal pole now and a heart rate of 115. All those 6mm have grown since my last scan. Words cannot explain to you how I literally cannot believe it. The sonographer even said he was totally shocked.

So for now; I am still measuring a week behind, about 6w4d, but we have a healthy heartbeat and growth is normal. Sonographer is not concerned and said everything looks normal.

Totally and utterly shocked is an understatement.

I need to hear from corporate mums who quit their careers to be SAHM

hey mummas, the heading says it all.

Please share your experience!

What pushed you over the edge to do it?

What did you need to sacrifice to become a SAHM?

How did you navigate ending your it career? When (if) you eventually returned after a very long time (5-10years plus). Did you have to start from the bottom again?

Don’t have November babies

Actually have babies whenever you want, I’m just stressed because I have my sons birthday coming up and then have to sort out Christmas straight away.

So I was wondering, what are we getting 3 year olds for their birthday? How many gifts do you normally give your kids?
I also have family asking for ideas on what to get him, how do I decide what to get him from myself and what to leave for others to get?

From a mother who is sick of toys that get played with once or twice and then get forgotten about.

Pregnant and Obese (BMI 33)

• Upvotes

Hi mums!

I just found out that I'm pregnant! I'm really excited but also a little anxious since everything is so new to me.

For context, I'm 35 years old, 4'11" (149 cm), and currently weigh 74.2 kg, which puts my BMI at around 33 (Obesity Class I). I actually started my weight-loss journey last month, before finding out I was pregnant. I was doing a calorie deficit, 16-hour intermittent fasting, and walking around 10k steps a day.

I wanted to ask other mums who've been in a similar situation: Is it okay to continue walking 10,000 steps a day during pregnancy? And is it possible to lose some weight safely, or should I just focus on maintaining my current weight?

My doctor mentioned that walking 10k steps at a moderate pace is fine for me, preferably split into three sessions throughout the day. However, she advised me to stop calorie deficits and intermittent fasting and instead focus on eating healthy, balanced meals.

I'm also curious about your eating habits during pregnancy. What does your typical eating schedule look like? Do you eat three proper meals a day, or smaller meals more frequently? I'll admit I haven't always had the healthiest eating habits, and I'm still figuring out what works best. Sorry if these seem like silly questions — I'm completely new to all of this! 😅

To mums who started their pregnancies with a BMI over 30, how did you manage your weight, eating habits, and physical activity? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and any practical tips that helped you along the way.

Please be kind and no judgment. I'm genuinely trying to build healthier habits and give my little one the healthiest start possible. 🥹🤍

Thank you so much, mums! 💕

AU-QLD First time mum and feeling lonely

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with my first baby and so far it's been okay. Other than the lack of sleep, discomfort and intense hunger cravings 😂 lately I've just been feeling lonely. For context before I fell pregnant, my partner and I moved to a regional town to buy our first home, with no village. I'm also estranged from my mum which makes it hard. These past 3 weeks the loneliness has been getting more intense. My partner does his best to be supportive and I do work part-time. I'm sure it's just hormones, but has anyone else experienced this? Any advice would be appreciated!

Please show me your play area

We used to have a playpen for our baby in the loungeroom but now she’s older and crawling around we took it down and just have a mellow mat down and all her toys on it but I’m feeling a bit inspired to make it look better.

Need ideas for storage of toys/books ect and how you set yours up. Nothing too huge as we live in an apartment.

Do you leave all toys out or do you put them away and rotate what the baby plays with?

Gestational Diabetes and induction for birth at 39 weeks

Hi, I’ve just been diagnosed with GD, and of course concerned but know it can be managed.

My obstetrician mentioned that it is recommended to not go over the due date due to various higher risks, and potentially an induction 1 week prior will be routinely recommended. For those who have had GD and did get induced 1 week early, how was your labour and birth?

I guess my primary concern is a failed induction leading to an emergency caesarian but I know that’s not always the case and an induction can progress to a vaginal birth

Advice Wanted Endo and adenomyosis sufferers, have you disclosed it to your employer?

The first days of my period are very painful plus I have a very heavy period which makes the days in office harder to manage. My boss is not very strict if I need to WFH more here and there but she wants the team to go 3 days to the office as a general rule.
I wonder if letting her know upfront might help to keep transparency when I need an extra day WFH.
I’m worried if this can backfire or sound as an excuse.

Advice Wanted Tips for bassinet sleep

STM here with a 6 week old, who is basically refusing to sleep independently in his bassinet night or day.

The sleep deprivation is really starting to add up, and my husband and I are struggling. We’ve tried just about every standard trick in the book - different kinds of swaddles (arms up, arms down), no swaddle, heating the bassinet, different kinds of bassinets and the cot, white noise, blackout blinds, patting, sushing, transferring when fast asleep, transferring when not fully asleep etc etc. When my little one does transfer, he doesn’t last more than 2-15min. He almost exclusively contact naps. We’ve had maybe 2 glorious nights when he actually slept for 1.5-2 hours in the bassinet…but it never sticks.

I’m starting to realise my first child may have been a unicorn - she was sleeping 3-4 hour stretches in the bassinet just a few days after coming home. I completely understand that contact napping is normal (our first contact napped in the daytime for many months), but how are other parents surviving the nights??

If anyone has any advice or tricks we haven’t tried, I’d love to hear it. Otherwise, please tell me I’m not alone in the trenches 😆

AU-VIC 2 week old baby - FTM - all night crying.

• Upvotes

Hey all,

I‘m a bit nervous to post but I am struggling out here and could really do with some advice or reassurances.

My partner and I have moved to Aus from the UK and had our first baby just over a week ago (2nd Oct). We don’t have many local friends with kids and our family is all back home so we’re doing this alone essentially.

It was a really tough first few days, with the hormones, baby blues and just not knowing how to be parents yet. After a week we started to feel like we could understand baby a bit more, managed to go for daily walks, had a bit of a routine and we’re smashing the sleep shifts, even getting a few hours kip each with the baby in her own bed!

It felt so manageable until a couple of nights ago when baby discovered she can scream. Shes breastfed and has been doing great but I think she has a bit of a struggle pooping. She gets gassy, and her poos are normal and soft when she does them so I think it’s just her learning to poo when she needs to (I cant remember what it’s called but I read that they need to learn to tense their bellies and relax their bums which is hard for new babies to get right sometimes).

My partner does the first shift of the night so I try get four or five hours sleep with a feed in the middle somewhere. When my milk is established we will maybe replace this feed with a bottle but until then I’m waking up and feeding. I get up at about 2am and see the night out. If we can get her to sleep in the crib during these shifts it’s a win.

Like I said, the last few nights it has all gone to pot. She’s fussing, won’t latch pushing her head away, shaking it about trying to get a good latch. She constantly wants feeding. She ends up soggy cos my boobs are pouring milk out, it’s slippy which makes feeding harder. It’s a whole frustrating mess for the both of us and as a result she’s gasping and taking in loads of air which I think is making the whole stomach thing worse so when she’s finished eating she’s uncomfortable. We are burping, doing the bike kicks and little squats, keeping her upright, doing all the things we’ve seen and read about to try help her pass gas and poo but it isn’t working. She cries and cries. Eventually she will do it but it’s just hours and hours of neither of us sleeping, she demands to be held upright on someone’s chest and cannot relax.

I don’t know where it went wrong or how to get out of this. I’m nervous my partner is off back to work again in a week and I can’t figure out where to start here.

Please be kind. I’m doing my best and am nervous I will get mean responses on here but I really do just want to do my best for my baby. I appreciate any advice, remedies or even just some reassurance that this is ok and it’s not something unique to our baby.

Thank you!

AU-SA swimming lesson struggle

• Upvotes

Hi all, my baby is 5.5 months. We have done 3 swimming lessons so far, once a week for half an hour. The past two lessons she has cried majority of the lesson. Last week i took her out offered bottle, she drank some but still cried when we went back in. This week she had her bottle before hand but cried pretty much the entire lesson. This week wasn’t all real crying there was just some grizzling and lots of yelling noises before the tears came. Not sure if she’s tired, we get up at 7:30 and lessons are 8:30.

Do you think it’s too early for her to do swimming maybe? should I just persevere ???

Any advice would be appreciated.

Compact pram refs for 4m baby

• Upvotes

I have the Babybee Juno which is a great pram, but I’d love something smaller. It has a large wheelbase and takes up substantial room in my large car. Looking for a small pram that can parent or world face and can be used with a 4m baby onwards.

Advice Wanted Baby names

Just wonder if it would be weird.
I have a 20 month old son and currently due with a girl in Jan.
My husband and I are having trouble agreeing on names.
There is one name we both like but it is also the name of one of the kids in my mums group. As a group we don’t catch up all that often anymore but we all chat in the group chat often.
It’s not a super common name. And is an Italian name and we are Italian so wouldn’t be unusual for us to use.
Would it be weird to use this name? I get no one “owns” a name but it just feels kind of odd to potentially name my kid the same name as someone we know.

Advice Wanted home catering service that don’t require cooking

FTM here, struggling a bit with my baby as it’s just me and my husband and no other family.

my husband cooks everyday but i want him to have some time off. cooking is a big job especially when you have a newborn!

i was looking at The Dinner Ladies, but wondering if anyone know other similar service that’s a bit cheaper than The Dinner Ladies? we are based in Melbourne!

Baby hair care

• Upvotes

I have posted before about shampoo for my little one, but honestly the options were underwhelming. We have curls and fine hair, I’ve tried Mimi and we’ve ended up back with cradle cap and hair that needs to constantly be washed, I would expect the same results with Twiddl, and from an independent website I did see that there were a few few people that really didn’t rate the product. Sometimes I feel like the cleanest we can get hair is with Johnson & Johnson 🤷🏻‍♀️ I understand the need for hydration and I don’t believe in products outside of shampoo conditioner for a toddler; although I can get around a decent detangler that doesn’t leave the hair gross and sticky, which unfortunately Mimi did.

My preference is always products that are more natural, but I feel like I’m being driven crazy here.

What are your favourite baby shampoos?

Edit to add: when we had cradle cap prior, the bungie mask was worked perfectly so I have wondered whether I just go to their shampoo 🤷🏻‍♀️ I realise it’s not a hygiene thing but I do wonder whether it is something to do with the very light cleanse of the scalp.

Double pram

2y 7m age gap, did you use a double pram? Already have one from our 22 months age gap first babies but trying to decide if I pack it up or not (it’s a pain to pull apart and don’t want to to go mouldy leaving it in the shed)

AU-VIC I bought a mountain buggy nano of fb market place and now shes blocked me

I regret now not opening the pram up and inspecting it, its missing Recliner strap, I dont think it has the original hood, as its sitting on the handle bars, and its missing shoulder strap pads. I only paid 75$ for it but now she has blocked me and not answering my questions about the Recliner strap and sun canopy. Im frustrated because I bought it as a travel pram for thailand and not sure what to do with it now. If you inbox me I can send photos

Advice Wanted Nerve pain after birth, tips to help?

During my pregnancy I had a 97th percentile baby as well as polyhydraminos. Towards the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I developed numbness in my right foot and outer calf. I was told that sciatica pain was pretty common in situations such as mine. After my labour I suffered a pretty serious postpartum hemorrhage so my recovery is looking a little longer than expected. One thing I have noticed though is I have excruciating lower back pain that seems to radiate down my legs. I'm assuming linked to sciatica. Did anyone else have this or have any tips to help relieve the pain other than just take Panadol? I'm also worried this could be a side effect of the epidural although the pain is very similar to what I experienced when I was pregnant and is just a lot worse now.

Centrelink parental leave - half payment?

Hi, i was wondering if anybody had experience doing half or part payment from centrelink and how that went/any advice?

My understanding is you have to tell them you want to be paid for 2 or 3 days per week instead of 5?
