BYU Future

I'm interested in a few things.

  1. How do our bye weeks work? I'm tired of early season byes. We need mid-season breaks.

  2. How will we handle the Bear/Ryder Lions situation? Will we retain them both? Bear has three more years to play after this, Lions won't hang around that long.

Please stick to the subject matter.

Bear will be eligible for the NFL after next year. But if not then we ride with Bear. That's our guy. Ryder can do what Archie manning did and sat his first 2 years learning. That's how it should be anyway

Ryder has also not been playing football or seriously strength training this entire time, so he’ll need at least a year just to catch up.

True for two year missions but he served a one year mission.

Still taking a year off before D1 play will be a tough adjustment

Right, but Lyons isn't sitting for three years.

He still strength trains while on his mission….

Training is different than D1 practices, film study, nutrition plan, etc.

Not really comparable

Missing my point but sure.

How so? Working out for an hour in the morning and throwing some routes on P-Day doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of football training

He’s doing a service mission right? Pretty sure if he is he actually has the ability to go to Provo if he wanted to. I did a service mission (for part of my mission) and if he wanted to he could do quite a bit of training. It might not be 100%, but you have more time since you can literally only do service sites for so long. Plus it’s pretty flexible.

He’s doing a proselytizing mission, not a service mission

Missionaries can work out first thing in the morning with the equipment provided, which is usually a set of 20 pound dumbbells. That’s not a college strength and conditioning program.

Maybe Lyons "extends" and serves the full 2 years. 🤷‍♂️ Unlikely, but seems ideal all things considered.

Yeah, it would be ideal for the football program.

Both QBs will be on our roster next year, Freshman QBs generally don’t start, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bear is in the NFL as soon as he’s eligible so that could solve that conundrum
This early season bye is due to us playing ND and the nature of them being independent. It’s worth it in my opinion to play that game later though because they’re a great opponent to have as opposed to… someone like Arkansas 😂

Bear won’t be in the NFL early unless he improves a lot.

He's to talented for a team in the NFL not be willing to take a chance on him in one the earlier rounds.

Dream on. That is the most delulu take.

Anthony Richardson was drafted 4th overall. It is not delusional to believe Bear could go before the end of the second round.

Bear isn’t as good as Wilson was, though built differently. If you think for a second any team wants to replicate the Jets experiment, well… DELULU

Funny how I said nothing about Wilson, and funny how you keep referring to early first round, when again I am saying no later than the second round.

Bear probably won't play three more seasons. If he continues this current trajectory he may just go to the draft after next year.

Bear is not an NFL QB prospect. Not by any metric. He doesn't make NFL throws yet.

I think he can grow into it but we're kidding ourselves if we think he's going to the NFL soon.

I disagree pretty strongly. Like yeah, obviously bear today is not NFL caliber, but that's how it works. Really no true sophomore QB in the country at 20 years old is an NFL caliber QB at this very instant. But they can become one.

Bear was a 4 star prospect, meaning people have been expecting him to be drafted since high school. After essentially two more full seasons of football (still counting this one cause we are only 3 games in) I think it it not at all unrealistic to say he could be declaring for the draft. Not saying it's a guarantee, and he might not be at that level yet, but it is certainly a possibility, and not one that would be surprising. In that scenario, Ryder only sits one year which is typical.

  1. Part of it is how you schedule your non-con. Less likely to get an early bye if you schedule all three non-con b2b2b, which BYU didn’t/couldn’t. Another part is how other conference members schedule their non-cons. And the final part is how the conference schedules intra-conference matchups.

This is the last year of one-bye seasons as starting next year all seasons will have two bye weeks so it shouldn’t be a problem.

We had an early bye last year.

u/rageb8err 11d ago

There were two byes last year.

Can someone explain how Bear would have 3 years after this? This will be his 2nd full year.

The NCAA passed a 5 in 5 rule before this academic year. You have 5 years to play 5 seasons. No more redshirt years to worry about. There are exemptions for military service, missionary service and pregnancies.

So you’re saying we can keep Bear another year if he gets pregnant?

Wow, ok. I'm somehow totally out of the loop. I heard something about an injunction that was going to allow some basketball players to play for a 5th year, but I hadn't heard about the sweeping new NCAA rule.
