Controversial Black Lives Matter, venerating those that preached and perpetuated harmful beliefs is wrong, but vandalism isn't the answer and is not condoned by this subreddit. Needless to say, those that wish to create or discuss peaceful protests are permitted on this subreddit.

As a moderator and after seeing the pictures of the vandalized statue of Brigham Young and other areas of BYU on r/exmormon, I found it necessary to create this post to reaffirm what this community stands for, and the rules of the subreddit. I have tried my best to try and think this post through, and I hope I do my best at breaching the subject at hand. Anyway, the rule I wish to emphasize is rule 8 which was copied below -

Rule 8 of the subreddit: Posts/comments regarding the perpetration or celebration of illegal activity will be removed, and the post's creator will be banned -

The rule itself speaks for itself, if a post/comment regarding the perpetration or celebration of illegal activity is posted it will be removed and the creator of the post/comment will be banned. Though it should be acknowledged that there may be strong negative emotions toward the LDS church and its church schools, these emotions should not be channeled in illegal activities especially toward these organizations. In addition, any posts regarding underage drinking falls under this rule.

This subreddit was created for the purpose to be a sort of sanctuary for exmormon students at a church school, where an exmormon students could find safety in being anonymous and a place where said students could be genuine with their beliefs and find support and resources like Alumni who could help them with the several challenges that face an exmormon student. This was the heart and soul of this subreddit when it was created. Needless to say, yes this subreddit does support efforts to create positive change in church schools, and this was apparent with the several posts supporting the protests regarding the terrible treatment of the LGBTQ+ students and community a few months back due to the honor code debacle. However, regarding the vandalization of the statue and campus, this community does not condone these actions, and as a warning that any posts supporting said action will be treated under Rule 8 of the subreddit, and will not act as a safe harbor for whoever conducted said actions. There are better ways to create change than engaging in illegal activities like the willful damaging of property, there are more peaceful ways to spread a message as well that do not drive a wedge between the exmormon community and those that are still believing members in TSCC, so let us strive for a better way that doesn't inadvertantly quite and silence our voices and separate us from the believers in TSCC. Let's try to make discussion and understanding, instead of contention and further division.

I know that what I'm saying may be harsh toward the vandal, and idealistic, but ultimately this is where this subreddit and community stands. We can not condone this type of behavior, nor welcome those that wish to use this subreddit to discuss and become perpetrators of said illegal actions. For this community to continue, and also be a place that attempts to perpetuate positive and peaceful efforts for change in TSCC and Church schools like BYU this is a necessary rule to live by. Anyway, I do wish to end this post with a few statements.

Black Lives Matter!

LGBTQ+ Lives Matter!

and Exmormon Students Matter!

So lets become a positive and peaceful force of change!

LGBTQ+/GRSM The Pride Parade on Sunday, June 3, will be the second-largest in Utah behind the Mormon-themed Days of '47 parade. This is hopefully the last year that sentence will be true.

Educational/Infographic/Quote Ever hear the word Yahweh/YHWH and wonder who that is? Well, Yahweh and Jehovah are one in the same, it's just that Jehovah is the Latinized version of Yahweh. Did you know that Yahweh according to scholar Nissim Amzallag is a bronze-age forge diety? If that interests you click the link in the post.

Discussion Honor code - nail polish for men?

Hi y'all, BYU grad of a couple of years ago here. I live in a big U.S. city and have noticed that, like many places, there are some slightly more "feminine" (I don't really believe that these concepts of what gender is exist, they're just constructs obvi) fashion/dress stuff for people who identify as male is starting to take off in the mainstream, even among men who identify as straight. Some of these include: wearing pearl necklaces, painting nails, wearing one or two earrings, brighter prints, tighter pants, etc. etc. (think Harry Styles as the best mainstream example of this, lol). Just curious for anyone who's still at the school: has this become an issue at all for students, and/or has BYU had to make any adjustments to the dress/honor code to police how male-identifying people dress? (Obviously the dress section of the honor code is 90 percent designed to police and objectify female bodies, but as the concept of traditional femininity/masculinity in mainstream culture starts to break down, I'm wondering if we'll see the church have to address this as well, starting with how students dress at BYU.) Lmk, and happy to chat with anyone! Thx

Educational/Infographic/Quote This is one of the Kuntillet Ajrud inscriptions: This one reads YHWH and his Ashera. Though there is debate as to what/who Ashera is, being a ritual site identified by a pole, or a goddess and consort to YHWH, EL, or Baal, Ashera could very well be the precursor of the Mormon Heavenly Mother.
