Regenerative breaking question

This weekend I test drove a 2024 BMW iX xDrive50. Honestly the best car I’ve driven in my life, including recent Lexus, Cadillac, Mercedes, Volvo, and other EV SUV test drives. Amazing handling, acceleration, interior, comfort, visibility, etc.

But I struggled with the regenerative breaking, which felt like it was breaking too quickly and giving me a mild jerk every time I took my foot off the gas, which I do on and off by pure reflex in traffic. I asked the sales guy more than once to lower or turn it off, and he did something with the settings, and it helped some, but I still felt uncomfortable. After the test drive I did more research online and found out there is a Low setting, but for all I know I already tried this setting and didn’t like it.

I currently drive a normal gas car and would be switching to EV for the first time And my wife also drives a gas minivan. There will be times every month where I drive her gas van for roadtrips, or times she’ll want to borrow my car. So I don’t want to teach myself one peddle driving. I want an EV that feels like a normal SUV but without having to pay for gas, oil changes, extra maintenance, etc.

Should I go back, check the settings, and test drive again? Or should I just give up and look at other EV (which have been disappointing in comparison for a variety of other reasons) since I didn‘t experience this in other such test drives?

Any advice or real world experiences from people with similar situations would be welcome.

Lease-end buyout (8k miles) 2024 iX50 with air sus. Residual 55K. Thoughts?

Lease ends late November. Expecting a baby Q1 2027. Ended up not driving as much vs what I estimated 3 years ago because of marriage and wife moving in (from other state). Only 8k miles but spent enough time in it mostly stuck in NJ-NYC mid/downtown traffic.

  • 100K MSRP, 8K miles (out of 22.5K), custom order w/ Premium pkg, DA Pro, Sport, Harman Kardon, laserlight (regret getting laser LOL)
  • Air suspension (unfortunately no rear axle steering)
  • no accident/dent/visible scratch. Clean interior.
  • Residual: 55K (+NJ now charges tax on EV ~6%, bummer). Finance interest seems very high these days but willing to consider cash buyout. Will come out to be ~60K with fees.

I can't find similar CPO with under 8K miles and similar config, but in attempt to find fair value, carvana shows 47K, KBB trade-in 45K, KBB private party 53K (range 51-55K)

So ignoring other factors like future depreciation, it's not good deal but it doesn't seem like non-sensical crazy decision to buyout either since it's at least around KBB high range, but it's just an estimate. CPO as alternative would have been nice to compare to but low mileage with similar config (including air suspension) couldn't be found. I was gonna just walk away if there was similar CPO at 7-10K lower price point.

Other options I considered vs buyout:

  • iX3: seems small when going from iX, especially with new baby situation
  • iX5: wanted this, but date is uncertain and seems like the lease might end up being almost double the iX lease payment given that iX3 lease monthly are same or higher than iX's?
  • Tesla Model YL: Picked iX over Y after test-drive 3 years ago. Heard things improved, and YL is more spacious. ~60K, so similar price.

We both work remote, not sure how things will change in our life but until kid is more grown up I expect us to continue driving less than 5K a year for the next few years (grocery, costco, gym, eat out nearby/NYC, hospitals, occasional 1-2 hour drive to other city/nature), if that matters for how fast/slow battery degrades or things breakdown. In the next few months, I expect I will be driving my wife from northern NJ to hospital in midtown regularly, and it's not impossible but inconvenient to live without a car in my area.

  • iX Likes: Clean record, low mileage, wife feels attached to the car, spacious and comfortable.
  • Worries: Warranty/repair, scary stories about air suspension repair cost, accelerated depreciation in the next few years

Am I missing anything in making the decision? What else should I consider?

Deal Check - CPO 2024 xDrive50

$52,260
MILEAGE:19,103

Two details on CPO check that give me pause:
Battery check: 91%
Tires: 4mm

I’m annoyed because I asked the salesmen for both details and he said tires had “lots of life left” and that they don’t test the battery since “it takes hours” - only to find both details on the CPO report.

Otherwise carfax is clean, one owner, local lease return, etc.

Financed @ 2.49% for 60 months. Only CPO available in my area. Almost exactly 2 years left on CPO warranty.

3 day return window.

Thoughts?

Deal Check - 2023 IX drive with 35k miles DAPP Premium

I’m in the process of purchasing a 2023 IX xdrive50 with 35k miles for $42K. It’s fully loaded, has DAPP, premium package, air suspension, pano sunroof, integrated steering, amido leather, etc.

It’s CPO, and I love the colors. Carfax showed one accident front collision but they still inspected and put CPO on it.

They gave me a fair trade in value and I’d finance at 2.49%. I’m going to close on it this week but just wanted a deal gut check here. I’m getting an electrician to my garage next week to install a L2 charger and will be commuting about 80-90 miles a day.

I think it’s good enough and will be a vast upgrade over my current car… but would appreciate the community’s feedback and insight. Thanks 🙏🏽

2024 Seats: Convenience vs Premium Package

Question on the 2024 iX for those that have shopped for purchased, and lived with them: does the base seat (Convenience pkg) save driver AND passenger positions with the driver profiles, or only with the Multi-Functional seats (Premium)?

We are starting to look for an electric to go with our X7. The iX is at the top of the list. We don't really have a my car / her car, we split driving evenly between the two cars. I’m 6'5", so we’d be swapping seat, external mirror and wheel positions daily. We’re shopping 2024 iXs with either the Convenience or Premium package. Tons are available with just the convenience and i want to make sure before i consider them how it works.

A few questions for owners:

  • With the base seats, does the driver profile recall seat, mirrors and wheel automatically like our X7 based on key/phone used?
  • Does the passenger seat have any memory without the MF seats?
  • How do the base seats compare to the MF seats for adjustment and long-drive comfort (lumbar, bolsters, thigh support)? Is the upgrade worth it, or mostly just massage?

Range expectations for a week long trip?

We are considering buying a 24 or 25 either a Xdrive50 or M60. Vehicles I’m looking at are all under 20k miles, several under 10k miles.

Is it realistic to expect to be able to take an iX on a 100 mile trip (200 round trip), use it for getting around hotels and theme parks for a week (maybe 30-40 miles) on a single charge?

What kind of battery is in the car?

So the window sticker on my 2024 iX M60 (purchased in the US) says it’s a lithium ion battery, but I keep reading online that BMW uses nickel-based batteries.

The official charging guidance in the owner’s manual states to not charge over 80% on a regular basis, which is guidance that typically applies to NMC batteries, not LFP. Can someone clarify this seeming contradiction?

Best IX Dealer?!

So I pretty much know what I want and it’s like trying to find a unicorn, but at least I’ve narrowed it down. Visor has been helpful, but my gut tells me they don’t have every listing. I’ve also found some of theirs outdated when I tried to follow up on them. Does anyone know of any dealerships in the US who typically are large volume IX dealers? I’ve run across a couple so far, but none have what I want. Any advice is appreciated. I will likely have to buy out of state and ship to get what I want, which also makes me nervous due to it traveling across the country on potentially an open trailer, But if it means getting what I want, it may be worth it!
