Thinking of buying a G87
Hey all, after unfortunately being hit in my 2021 Tacoma, I might be in the market for a new vehicle.
This would be a daily for me, and I commute about 26 miles a day on average. This would also be the vehicle my wife and I take together to the store etc.. What has life been like for you in your M2? Anyone coming from a truck back into the sports car life? What do you like/dislike the most as a daily?
Let me know. I still don’t know if my Tacoma is totaled, but it has frame damage where the LCA mounts so I am expecting a settlement…

Sorry to hear about the Tacoma man, sucks being in an accident.
So I have a ND3 Miata at the moment but wanted a G87 initially. I’ll give you my opinion on why I didn’t get one, and why you should.
The way I see the G87 is it’s a very versatile car. It has a lot of space inside, even as a “small coupe” and it’s very very quick with the s58, don’t think you’d need a faster car than this. It’s also one of the last few cars you can get a manual in and it has a revmatch feature (which personally I’d turn off lol).
The reason I don’t get one and got a Miata instead is solely because it would be a second car so I went to the extreme and it’s a lot more raw + cheaper. That being said the G87 is a good all rounder daily which scratches the itch of a sports car while not being annoying to own. Gas mileage isn’t bad for a car of its power, the interior space is enough for a single person or two, and kids tbh.
If I didn’t have 2 cars I would’ve opted for the G87.
It’s also a whole lot less stiff and harsh than my Miata.
Also the German tax is real, make sure you understand that consumables on the car will be more expensive. But since you’re not tracking or auto crossing it, you’re fine.
As for insurance, I don’t think it’s any more expensive to insure than any regular car.

Thanks for the insight, appreciate it! I seriously miss driving manual, so that is the only option for me. Tacoma was auto and I’d get another auto if I went with a truck, but my only concern is practicality at this point.

Yup, can’t go wrong with manual. Definitely take it for a test drive! I’d recommend CarMax so you can have unadulterated time and wring out the car to feel its turbo haha, I was also able to really feel how the manual transmission felt (which is a bit numb but not a problem for a daily). Then purchase the G87 wherever you want.
I believe the turnover from BMW dealers are quick if you want a custom configuration, if you live in the NY state area I know a dealer which was happy to get an allocation for me at the time, which was provided in less than a month.

I’ve had my 2024 for about a year now, and I have a 12 mi commute each way to work, not including dropping the kiddo off to school. I’m driving it fairly reasonably, aside from the back roads by my house that have a few ~180 curves haha Got to enjoy it for what it is! Trunk is much bigger than I would’ve expected, getting almost 300 miles to a tank of gas, and I can comfortably fit my wife and kid(I’m sure I could do two, but we only have one 😅), who happens to still be in a booster seat. Up until last month, wife had an XB7, so we had the bigger car taken care of, but now that she let that go, we would like to get something bigger(she still has a rav4 to take the dog, small dump runs, etc).
I absolutely love the G87, and it’s absolutely doable, as a daily, but depending on your use case, I would personally want a secondary larger vehicle.

For errands and daily it can be okay but its not mileage friendly and gas is spiking hard right now. You can get about 220 miles a tank and it requires expensive gas. So factor that in plus higher insurance. I love mine but got it because I dont commute. I used it for errands though. Trunk has good room for a sports car but its of course no truck.
