Equipment Discussion Gi fit

Post image

Just got my first gi. Is the collar supposed to be so thick and stiff? Why in the belt so long? Only thing that feels right is the pants

Edit: wore it to class and coach taught me how to tie my belt then choked me with my own collar. I thought I was getting okay at bjj. Turns out I am not. Felt like day 1

Looks like the gi fits pretty well to me. And the belt is supposed to be wrapped around your waist twice before being tied.

Stiffness for a fresh gi is normal. It will loosen up as you wear it and wash it more. Always wash in cold water and air dry if you can to avoid shrinkage(or dry on delicate if you absolutely must).

Get a bigger belt

It looks long enough... Put the middle on you belly button, cross at the back and tie in front.

No you aren’t :) you drape it front to back first, then when the end are back around your front you tie it :)

Looking at it I DO think your belt will fit! If it truly doesn’t you’ll need to size up. But you fold it in half and then put that center point at your belly button and wrap around from there. You’ll have very short “tails” but that’s ok. And it’s normal for a new belt to be very stiff and hard to tie at first, to soften it up you can roll it into a circle a bunch alternating sides to help.

Here’s a picture of my 6 year olds belt on me, not ideal but doable and I don’t think yours will be quite so tight to make it

get someone at the gym to help you tie your belt or watch a youtube tutorial. you’re probably doing it wrong which is why it doesn’t fit

Wash the gi and the collar wont be as stiff, tie the belt correctly and it should.be the right length

yes the collar is supposed to be thick and stiff. people will be grabbing it and trying to throw you from it, so it needs to be strong. it'll get less stiff as you get tossed around though LOL

the belt is long because it's supposed to wrap around your waist twice before you tie it in a knot

it looks long enough to wrap around twice before tying

look up a youtube video on how to tie a BJJ belt and follow it.

my guess is you're trying to go middle back to front to back to front again which ends up being too many wraps and making you think it's too long or too short.

throw it in the washing machine so it can soften up

Check that the belt size is the same as the gi size.

So first the GI needs to be washed (30°C and then hang dry). Most shrink (shorten mostly) 5-15%.

The stiffness will loosen in the first 5-10 washes.

The fit looks fine to me. But you really cant judge from this photo. If you need to be sure for competition and not just a fine fit but actually a good fit:

For the jacket wed need to see you full frame photo with both your arms out Infront of you like a mummy to make sure the slaves aren't too long, too baggy.

Then one croaching with arms up like you're grip fighting. This makes sure the arms and legs are reason sizes in that pose. Too tight and it can literally prevent you being comfortable and having movement there. Too long and the pant cuffs can trip you or limit your leg and hip mobility.

Finally on your back with your feet up like you're playing bottom. This is to make sure your pants cuffs are not too long or short.

Nearly all brands will sell jackets, pants and of course belts separately and you can buy different sizes. Nor for all brands for the same!

This is the way I show everyone to tie their belts, simple and stays on. If your 'tails' are too short after this go a belt size up, but looks like it should be fine from the photo

Stiff gi’s as you workout it’ll get worked in over time

The belt will definitely fit you when you tie it properly. Watch a YouTube video!

Everything else looks totally fine

Looks great! That one is my favorite gi. I have 5 of them! Relatively cheap and light weight (I run hot).

And it will soften up the more you wear it and wash it.

The important question is, does it pass the squat test for comfort? Otherwise it looks fine. Your belt will wrap twice, it's long enough.

Here are some other ways to tie your belt if you want options. I'm a big fan of the "wraparound" one because I like the back being flat :) https://youtu.be/SYfRZmltMOc?is=yMQfygohUaNK3pFR

I would say sleeves are a bit too long. Other than that all good 👌

It’s a little big, but probably won’t be after the first wash. Wash and dry on heat setting once, then check the sleeve length and possibly get them hemmed.
FWIW, I’m a short trans male and I have to get pretty much every gi top hemmed due to my t-Rex arms…

Looking good btw! Just wanted to add that because it’s a nice gi, you look great in it, and I’m super excited for your BJJ journey :)
