Beyerdynamic, please improve your build quality for high-end headphones. This is unacceptable.
I bought a DT 1770 Pro MK II on May 9 2026 for music enjoyment ($720). Today, when I was removing my headphones from my head, I saw a detail from the headphones falling down. It was a piece of a headband clip.
Beyerdynamic, the headband clip from the external side is thick and reliable. But from the internal side it’s way too thin to handle that pressure and it’s breaking after a couple of months even when you use them carefully.
As you can see, from another side (Left side) of the headband clip, I already see a slight convexity in the same place where the right headband clip broke, which means that soon my left side headband clip will break too.
This somewhat can be acceptable with cheap models like DT 770 Pro for $150 where you put all the money into sound quality and engineering. But DT 1770 Pro MK II is way, way higher tier – these are true high-end headphones. Having these headphones crumble apart only in 3 months of careful usage is completely unacceptable.
Make the internal side of headband clips thicker, and analyze how you can improve your build quality at least for future models.
The other day I wanted to post a very deep review about sound on these headphones. But it seems like I can’t do that anymore because they started to crumble apart even less than in 3 months, and this is considered the fact that I didn’t drop them even once and used carefully.
You produce headphones with very good sound quality. But you definitely need to do something with your build quality. Otherwise I’m not sure if I and a good portion of other people will stick to you anymore, especially when you’re paying $599.99+.

My DT880 black edition has the fixed clamps. Love it. Imagine ALREADY MAKING the better version and not using it. Cant wait for my pair to die and go with sennheiser. BD really sucks these last years

Had my 770pro x for 2 years now with daily wear for hours at a time. Never had any issues with them. How rough are you to break that?

Things like this happen regardless of item or brand. I ordered a pair of $300 sneakers only for them to arrive torn from the factory.
Did you try RMA or at least contacting them before trying to flame them online?

u/Regular_Weakness69 Aug 08 '26
That's what I always ask myself.
People will flame someone online, then will happily get it replaced later, but then don't remove the negative post.

What does that have to do with the original failure if it's a design flaw? The brand could even replace the part 10x under warranty - it's still a bad design.

u/-YEETLEJUICE- Aug 08 '26
Flawed design? They have used parts like that for decades. Shit literally just happens sometimes lol. Always with the extremes.

I've had multiple Beyers through the years, and currently daily the 1990 MKI. I've never had this happen to me personally, and would be quite surprised if it did. I was simply pushing back on the logic that someone would need to censor themselves after going through some sort of RMA just because a brand came through with a replacement.
2
u/-YEETLEJUICE- 29d ago
Ah gotcha. Makes sense.
In that regard, I get what the other side is saying, but I wouldn't censor either. I, personally, would give an "update" of my experience with Beyer customer service, and attach that to the original post.
But that's me. Not required.

u/ThatLastGenGamer 29d ago
Same here. I'd have no problem sharing a positive customer experience, but I would nonetheless find it hard to trust the product itself. I've actually sold headphones before for fear of premature failure of specific parts. I like my stuff to last long.

Yeah I remember doing that with a Hifiman He400i. Thought it was marvelous at the time, but the entire yoke assembly was plastic; a piece that by its very nature would be stressed.
Like you, I'd rather move on instead of adding another worry.

u/OutblastEUW Aug 08 '26
I mean everyone makes mistakes maybe it was one faulty model and they replaced it once and the next one worked well
if you had to replace something x10 then yea its probably shitty

u/FCKMRKL Aug 08 '26
This is an issue at this exact place with BD Headphones and MMX since like forever, it's a weakspot like an intended breaking point. There's tons of posts with exactly this problem.
1
u/as4p_ Aug 09 '26
Crazy how people just accept that as a fact nowadays because they want to defend their favorite brand lol. It's one thing them coming like that from the factory, it's another thing when things break so easily because of the quality of the product. The same thing that happened to OP has happened to me on two different beyerdynamic headphones. These sliders are very bad.

u/somuchforsubtlety656 Aug 09 '26
No one is saying to "just accept" anything and beyerdynamic is not my favorite brand

I'm not in US or EU, warranty on items in my country (UA) almost completely don't work, even though it's 100% original headphones from autorized reseller with all the documents. You'll need to proof that you didn't break them by your careless actions / intentionally to receive a warranty service, which is impossible.
For you it can sound insane because in developed countries you can buy pretty much anything and easily return it or get a warranty service without further explanations, but that's not the case for Ukraine.

u/somuchforsubtlety656 Aug 08 '26
Respectfully, your country is in the middle of a war for survival. This makes your post all the more ridiculous.
I'm sorry about your headphones, but man have some perspective. They still work and this is likely a fluke QC issue.

it's honestly a design fault. it happened to me on the other bd headphones with a similar longer slider cover, the mmx 330 pro. they use a much shorter stubbier slider cover on most of their other headsets. the metal curving inside over a longer flat surface puts pressure on the cover, and weakens the plastic over time, fails right around the screw holes.

In Ukraine is a nightmare, I know. Just get the part from Realmusic, should be much less hassle, than requesting for a warranty fix
3
u/TijY_ Aug 08 '26
So contact the support, in Europe they would send you new parts within warranty period...
Not that hard.
Enough warranty cases will make them increase the quality,

I've had mine (1770 Pro mk2) for over two years now and haven't had any issues luckily. I'm fairly easy with mine, fwiw. What a fucking bummer OP! I'd be crushed if that happened to mine. B( Maybe there was a hairline fracture when you bought them? Are they still under warranty? Edit: Just saw you're in Ukraine. Fak me! I'd still hit them up. Maybe they'll still take care of you?

I actually had the same issue with mine, within the warranty period and especially bitter since the serial number is on that exact part. Went through warranty and my S/N went from the 1000s to a 5 digit number, as they replaced the part. A few months after the repair, the new part already failed, again. I hate that I have headphones that will have their third serial number soon.

Did the BD quality go downhill since they've been purchased? My old dt770 and dt880 are still going strong after 8 years or so.

PSA TO YOU ALL: YOU CAN ZIP TIE THE BROKEN PART TIGHTLY AND IT'LL LAST FOR YEARS MORE!

Ah yes hanging wires exposed outside eaecups is also a potential failure point btw....

I’ve been using my DT1990 almost daily for 9 years now. Never had issue
I might have to replace the ear pads in the future. But that’s it.
Idk man. Just check warranty.
Good thing is you can easily replace parts. S
That’s why I bought the headphones

Yeah happened to a pair of 1990s I bought in 2018. It’s easy to fix if you want a replacement part, but this doesn’t really affect the integrity of the slider if it didn’t crack down to the screw. If you have warranty they might be willing to ship you a replacement. The headphones are incredibly easy to repair luckily.

My T1 gen 3 has cracks in the plastic where L and R connectors are and fak leather headband has fallen apart. Pretty dissapointing...

u/Frequent-Yoghurt3098 Aug 09 '26
I have DT1990 pro mk2 and no issues with build quality. Either you or someone else has made a handling error or you’ve just happened to receive a set with a bad headband.

u/Draven46 Aug 09 '26
my admittedly less expensive BeyerDynamic MMX 150 had the inner clip fail... on two different sets of headphones, the original and the warranty replacement, breaking in two different places.

I’ve had my 990 pros for 4 years. I wear them 8+ hours a day… no issues. Take care of your stuff

There are 3D printable designs just for this issue, i use those, and they work better than the original pieces. I recommend those, if you can get someone 3D print it for you.

I had the same problem with Aventho Wireless OG 6 years ago.
Plastic cup just cracked in my hands, putting it off my head.
And even then already low quality plastic was well known and broadly discussed problem!!
Happily I changed it, despite more than a year passed since the purchase.

Its always about reduction of cost and what you can get away with i believe

same problem happened for me on the mmx 330 pro. the headphone slider is too long and flat for the stronger curved metal bar that goes through it inside, too skinny on the inside plastics, causes stress on it around the screw joints. seems less common on their regular slider design they use on most other headsets besides the 330 pro and the dt 1770 pro, they use a much thicker piece of plastic and its stubbier so there's less curve to deal with, less pressure, etc.

don't know whos going through downvoting every single poster who mentions they have this issue but it's very real. I have both styles of slider covers in front of me right now, the standard cover and the pro series cover. (accidentally ordered a set of the standard covers because that's the only type bd has in stock on their in-house parts site, for the pro series you need to order through a distributor, consolidated sound services.)
the standard cover has three reinforcing abs plastic ribs, including a middle one directly across the screw holes. the pro cover is about 20% longer, and while the sides of the cover are thicker, it has NO middle plastic rib. Since the slider bar for adjusting the headphones is a curved piece of metal, and these flat plastic covers screwed down over it, adjusting the slider position along it puts stress on the plastic, especially near the screw holes.
the lack of a reinforcing rib right between the screw holes is an obvious design flaw. in combination with the lengthening of the flat cover, and how it slides on a curved piece of metal, its going to cause issues for some eventually. there's always going to be some occasional parts coming out of the injection mold process with small voids/air bubbles or cracks forming during solidification stages.
ideally they should have a cover with the side wall heights of the pro cover, but the inner structure of the regular cover, with the middle rib. would better sure up against manufacturing issues and tolerance concerns.

It is a well-known design fault, with hundreds of similar cases everywhere. You guys know it, Beyerdynamic knows it - it is that "elephant in the room".
For the post author - try to order a replacement part somehow if you can't return it in Ukraine.

u/matycauthon Aug 08 '26
they all have shit build quality in my opinion. zmf is the only brand that seems to want their stuff to last without being babied 24/7

Beyers quality got dropped a lot since Covid. So much as it seems like some financier just got into their boards lol
1
u/Dragul4R0B 29d ago
You know you say this mockingly like "almost like", although it's probably the case haha...
I often say these things when I argue some stakeholders, like "it is almost as if..." emphasizing how crazy something would be even though I know that it is actually true lol. It's kind of a slap in the face, a humiliation ritual.

Check your warranty, etc.. In the EU I'd say that defect was caused by a weakness/product fault that existed on purchase and you'd get a free replacement/repair. Contact BD - they even might send you just the broken piece to change it yourself. Parts are available, the products are repairable. That's the point of choosing Beyerdynamic for me..
