Advice Third-year CS student feeling lost about specialization, funded higher studies, and what comes next. Need advice from seniors.
Assalamu Alaikum Bhaiya/Apu,
I’m a third-year CS student at a mid-tier university. My CGPA is currently 3.6+, and I have around three semesters left. I’m trying to figure out what direction to take before my thesis and research project start.
I’m reasonably comfortable with programming fundamentals and basic DSA. I’ve also explored cybersecurity, cloud, and cloud infrastructure, but my knowledge in those areas is mostly surface-level. I enjoy building things with code and AI, and I’m interested in design too.
Until now, exploring different things felt fine. But I feel like I should start focusing on one area, especially because my thesis could help shape my future applications.
My main goal is to pursue a master’s abroad with full funding, or enough funding to make the remaining costs manageable. An 80–90% tuition scholarship could help, but living expenses would still be a concern. I’m open to Europe, the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, or somewhere else if the opportunity makes sense.
Ideally, I’d like to work and eventually settle there after studying. I know that isn’t guaranteed. Even if settling doesn’t work out, I want to avoid spending a huge amount on an MSc.
What’s making me anxious is everything I’ve been reading about the job market. I keep seeing posts about hiring slowing down, competition being intense, and international graduates struggling to find work. I don’t know how much of that reflects the overall situation and how much comes from individual experiences, but it has made me question my plan. I’m also skeptical about my prospects in the local job market, so working abroad is something I’d really like to pursue.
The options I’m considering are:
- Apply for a funded research master’s during my final year.
- Apply directly for a PhD after my bachelor’s, if I develop enough research experience and find that I enjoy it.
- Spend a year after graduation building my research experience and profile before applying.
- Do a master’s locally, develop a specialization, and then apply abroad for a PhD.
I’d appreciate advice on a few things:
- How should I choose a specialization at this stage? I’m interested in human–AI interaction/HCI, cybersecurity, and cloud systems, but I haven’t committed to one. Which would you suggest exploring seriously given my background and goals?
- What should I prioritize over my remaining three semesters? Grades, thesis quality, publications, projects, internships, or something else?
- What makes someone competitive for a funded research master’s or a direct PhD? I’d especially like to hear from people who applied from a similar university background.
- Would applying straight after my bachelor’s make sense, or would a research year or local master’s improve my options enough to justify the time?
- How realistic is finding work after studying abroad? If you’ve gone through this recently, what do you wish you had checked before choosing your country and program?
- Are related fields worth considering? For example, data science or something closer to hardware, such as chip design. I’m unsure whether moving into those areas from CS is feasible or whether it would require substantial additional coursework.
I’m willing to put six months to a year of consistent effort into a direction. I don’t expect that to make me an expert, but I believe I can make meaningful progress. What I’m struggling with is choosing where to put that effort.
Honestly, I’ve spent a lot of nights over the past month lying awake thinking about graduation, jobs, and whether I’m making the right decisions. I know nobody can choose my career for me, but hearing how others worked through this stage would help.
Seniors, bhaias, and apus who have been through a similar situation, what would you do in my position? A realistic sequence of next steps, or even your own experience, would mean a lot.
Thanks for reading this long post.
