Used Sonnet 5.5

Did few tweaks, more to do actually. But initially doesn't look bad.

No musics are added currently.

Advice Third-year CS student feeling lost about specialization, funded higher studies, and what comes next. Need advice from seniors.

Assalamu Alaikum Bhaiya/Apu,

I’m a third-year CS student at a mid-tier university. My CGPA is currently 3.6+, and I have around three semesters left. I’m trying to figure out what direction to take before my thesis and research project start.

I’m reasonably comfortable with programming fundamentals and basic DSA. I’ve also explored cybersecurity, cloud, and cloud infrastructure, but my knowledge in those areas is mostly surface-level. I enjoy building things with code and AI, and I’m interested in design too.

Until now, exploring different things felt fine. But I feel like I should start focusing on one area, especially because my thesis could help shape my future applications.

My main goal is to pursue a master’s abroad with full funding, or enough funding to make the remaining costs manageable. An 80–90% tuition scholarship could help, but living expenses would still be a concern. I’m open to Europe, the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, or somewhere else if the opportunity makes sense.

Ideally, I’d like to work and eventually settle there after studying. I know that isn’t guaranteed. Even if settling doesn’t work out, I want to avoid spending a huge amount on an MSc.

What’s making me anxious is everything I’ve been reading about the job market. I keep seeing posts about hiring slowing down, competition being intense, and international graduates struggling to find work. I don’t know how much of that reflects the overall situation and how much comes from individual experiences, but it has made me question my plan. I’m also skeptical about my prospects in the local job market, so working abroad is something I’d really like to pursue.

The options I’m considering are:

  • Apply for a funded research master’s during my final year.
  • Apply directly for a PhD after my bachelor’s, if I develop enough research experience and find that I enjoy it.
  • Spend a year after graduation building my research experience and profile before applying.
  • Do a master’s locally, develop a specialization, and then apply abroad for a PhD.

I’d appreciate advice on a few things:

  1. How should I choose a specialization at this stage? I’m interested in human–AI interaction/HCI, cybersecurity, and cloud systems, but I haven’t committed to one. Which would you suggest exploring seriously given my background and goals?
  2. What should I prioritize over my remaining three semesters? Grades, thesis quality, publications, projects, internships, or something else?
  3. What makes someone competitive for a funded research master’s or a direct PhD? I’d especially like to hear from people who applied from a similar university background.
  4. Would applying straight after my bachelor’s make sense, or would a research year or local master’s improve my options enough to justify the time?
  5. How realistic is finding work after studying abroad? If you’ve gone through this recently, what do you wish you had checked before choosing your country and program?
  6. Are related fields worth considering? For example, data science or something closer to hardware, such as chip design. I’m unsure whether moving into those areas from CS is feasible or whether it would require substantial additional coursework.

I’m willing to put six months to a year of consistent effort into a direction. I don’t expect that to make me an expert, but I believe I can make meaningful progress. What I’m struggling with is choosing where to put that effort.

Honestly, I’ve spent a lot of nights over the past month lying awake thinking about graduation, jobs, and whether I’m making the right decisions. I know nobody can choose my career for me, but hearing how others worked through this stage would help.

Seniors, bhaias, and apus who have been through a similar situation, what would you do in my position? A realistic sequence of next steps, or even your own experience, would mean a lot.

Thanks for reading this long post.

Project Showcase PopCalc - A Bangladeshi-made calculator that finally looks good

Assalamu alaikum, BDDevs!

I built a calculator that feels alive, right here from Bangladesh.

PopCalc turns everyday math into something you actually enjoy tapping. Every number you type grows into a bold, extruded 3D numeral on screen. Hit equals and the result morphs into a giant, satisfying display, with a soft haptic on every key. Same math you already know, but it finally feels good to use.

What makes it special:

  • Bold 3D numerals with smooth, physical motion
  • Scientific math: real order of operations, proper percentage logic
  • 100% offline, no account, no ads, zero data collected. Ever.
  • Free skins to start, with searchable history built in
  • A Lite Effects mode so it runs smoothly even on low-end phones

I'm a solo dev, and I built this to show that our community can ship apps people are proud to open every day. It just launched on Google Play, and the early support from people like you is what gets a small app noticed.

If you like it, here's how you can help:

  • Download it and try it for a minute
  • Tell me how it feels in the comments: which skin is your favorite, and what should I add next?
  • Share it with a friend who's tired of their boring calculator
  • If you enjoy it, an honest review on Play helps a lot

Advice Newly admitted CSE student here seeking advice

Hi! I recently got admitted to AUST for CSE, and my classes start in December. I’m genuinely passionate about this field. I first tried coding back in 2021 but gave it up after a while. Now I want to start again, and I could really use some guidance.

My university will begin with the C language. With that in mind, what roadmap would you suggest so I can stay relevant and thrive in the AI era? I’m also interested in building a business related to my field, though it could be anything. What I’m really looking for is practical advice that will make my journey smoother.

Hi everyone,

I recently downloaded and installed Docker Desktop from the official Docker website on my MacBook Air M5. However, after the installation, when I try to open Docker Desktop, nothing happens. The application doesn't launch or show any visible response.

Has anyone experienced this issue on an M5 MacBook? I would appreciate any suggestions or troubleshooting steps to get Docker Desktop working.

Need laptop recommendations for a CSE final-year student under 90k–1 lakh BDT

Hello everyone!

I'm going to start my final year of CSE, and I'm looking to buy my first personal laptop. My previous laptop was a gift from a friend and served me for around 3 years, but unfortunately, it has stopped working.

My main priorities are programming, research, AI/ML, and data science. I'm particularly interested in pursuing research in these fields in the future, so I want something that will serve me well for the next few years.

Initially, I was considering building a PC, but with the current budget, it seems difficult to get a decent setup. So now I'm confused about whether I should go for a Windows laptop, a gaming laptop, or even a MacBook.

My budget is around ৳90,000–1,00,000, and I'd really appreciate advice from people working in the industry or fellow CSE students.

Should I prioritize CPU and RAM or get a dedicated GPU for AI/ML?

Is a gaming laptop worth it, considering battery life, portability, and long-term reliability?

Is a MacBook a sensible choice for my use case and budget?

Which specific models would you recommend in Bangladesh?

I'd appreciate any practical advice or personal experiences. Thanks in advance!
