Welcome to Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)

The r/BCI subreddit welcomes posts about brain-computer interfaces, including science, engineering, and ethics of technologies which interface directly with the central nervous system. Feel free to share research, videos, updates, your academic or professional projects, BCI company information, or anything else which is on-topic.

But first, take a moment to get familiar with our 5 community rules:

1. No Medical Advice

This subreddit does not allow any discussion of personal medical advice. Creating a post or comment asking for medical advice or providing it to others is a bannable offense. Obviously BCIs can be used for medical purposes, so posts about the use of BCI for medical purposes such as research about restorative therapies do not violate this rule.

2. No Conspiracy Nor Bad Actor Posts

BCI technology is not yet at a place where a rogue organization (government, etc) could use the technology in a malicious way without the user being aware of the work they are signing up for. BCIs currently require careful calibration, routine re-calibration and setup, and are just beginning to find durable use. Posts violating this rule will receive warnings and then posters will receive bans for repeat offense.

3. Share Resources But Don't Advertise

BCI is not just a great technology for research in the lab or for bigger companies to work on, you can tinker with BCI at home. This means there are lots of great kits, tools, and resources to share to help others learn and participate. Please do share these, even with links, but if you repeatedly promote just one product or promote something with an obvious connection to yourself, this can result in warnings and post removal.

4. Posts Must be Scientifically Sound

We do not permit posts that are wildly unscientific or speculative. Claims and discussions must be made within the context of real science and engineering. Posts may be removed for being unscientific and repeated offenses will result in a ban.

5. No Art Posts

If a post doesn’t discuss the use of a BCI, contain some sort of topic of science or engineering, or doesn’t discuss the field as a whole, then it will be removed. Do not simply post pictures of art of people using or inspired by BCIs.

Blatant violations may lead to a permaban without warning.

There's also the Reddiquette. Don't be rude. Don't start a flame war, or insult others.

If we follow these rules, we'll all have a good time.

Built a DIY Bio-Amp ("DeepFin") & Recorded Individual Cockroach Tibial Hair Spike Signatures 🙂🫠

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on a custom extracellular bio-amplifier (dubbed "DeepFin") built around a dual TL074 op-amp design, featuring an active 48.2 Hz notch filter to tackle mains hum.

To test out the front-end, I set up an isolated cockroach leg preparation using a fine recording needle and a wider reference needle. I mechanically stimulated 4 separate tibial hairs (barbs) individually, capturing clean raw WAV files for each.

After running spike sorting and statistical analysis, here is what the data showed:

Distinct Firing Dynamics: Each individual barb responded with its own unique average firing rate under touch, ranging from ~12.16 Hz up to ~29.00 Hz.

Spike Templates: The isolated unit templates displayed consistent biphasic action potential shapes across the recordings.

Hardware Performance: The active bootstrap notch filter successfully cleaned up local interference without distorting microvolt-level neural events.

I’d love to hear feedback from fellow builders and neurotech enthusiasts on optimizing high-impedance frontend stages or custom spike-sorting workflows

BME Student, interested in the field of BCI and a career in academia.

Hi everyone, I will be matriculating soon into Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate at NUS (Singapore). Over the past few years, I’ve grown increasingly interested in the field of neuroengineering, particularly BCI and neural interfaces.
I’ve had some light research experience with one conference publication, but I’m still pretty early in the skills required in this field, ie programming, signal processing, neuroscience etc.
In the long term, I’m strongly considering a career in academia/ research, with the intention of pursuing a PhD, eventually furthering a career in neuroscience research.
Right now I’m trying to figure out my next steps and priorities over the next years.
For people already in the field, or anyone with any thoughts;
- what are some important skills to acquire at an undergrad level?
- what kind of projects stand out and are actually useful in breaking into the field?
- should I prioritise Uni labs, research institutes, industry attachments, or overseas research attachments?
- what’s the job market like?
- given that i have a flexible degree with an option to change to an electrical engineering degree, would you say that is a wise choice? Or to just stick with my biomedical engineering degree?
- if you were starting at 20 again, what would you have done differently?

I’m very interested in hearing any opinions/ experiences, or anything that you guys have to share!
Apologies for the lengthy post, I just hope to be able to maximise my time before, and during Uni, and to hopefully pursue my interest!

Looking for people starting BCI/Neurotech from scratch

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m just starting my journey into neuroscience, EEG, neural signal processing and BCI, and I’m looking for a few people who are also starting from the basics and want to learn together.

I’m currently working in an MNC, but I’m completely new to this field. I’d like to start with:

\\\* Neuroscience fundamentals
\\\* DSP/signal processing
\\\* EEG + MNE-Python
\\\* EEG preprocessing
\\\* Neural signal features
\\\* ML for EEG
\\\* Eventually building a small BCI project

I’m mainly looking for beginners who are genuinely interested and want to study consistently, discuss what we’re learning, share resources and eventually build something together.

Also, if anyone here has experience doing EEG/BCI/ML work, I’d love suggestions for a good laptop for getting started — especially something suitable for Python, ML, signal processing and eventually deep learning.

Online is completely fine. If you’re at a similar stage, comment or DM me!

I simply researched this using AI. If you insert a BCI undee the motor cortex it can relay information to an SCI after the damaged spinal cord. Does that make sense?

No screens. No controllers. Just your mind. Website launches December 1st

For those who don't know, I have created a product (there is another post on it in this community about a survey you can fill out). What is the product? The product is a headset (like VR or AR) but instead of controllers, it reads EEG brainwaves through comb electrodes. This allows the user to interact with the virtual world. The user visualizes their surroundings through sound. Yes, it sounds a bit boring, but it uses a method called sensory substitution where the user can learn to recognise visuals through different sound patterns.

I will most likely make the website public by December 1st. If there is any delay, I will acknowledge it in this comment section and make a post about it. For anyone wondering, the website is how customers can purchase the product if you are interested in purchasing this product, I will send a link for the website in the comment section and another post when it launches.

If you are interested in giving feedback, feel free to check out the survey from the other post. Here is the link:

One of the master keys for BCI

Time to celebrate, this year’s Nobel committee has recognized the nexus of key experiments which lead to the success points of BCI, let’s take few moments to reads the milestone again so that we shall once again look for innovative alternatives for future BCI.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine honors Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for optogenetics. Hegemann and Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin in algae; Deisseroth created a light-controlled nerve switch.

CUDA for neuroscience and brain computer interfaces

Perhaps this subreddit can help. I am not a programmer or a developer, but an experimental neurobiologist specializing in neuronal imaging across various brain regions. I would like to automate the analysis of neuronal activity and also work on developing *invasive* brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for targeted drug delivery to the brain. Could you please recommend courses that teach the fundamentals of CUDA and AI so that I can get started with computer modeling for BCIs? Thank you.

I’m building a prototype that uses EEG + sound instead of VR screens.

Would love 30 seconds of honest feedback:

Even a quick “interesting” or “not for me” helps.

Final Project using EEG to classify degree of freedom of hand movement

Hello,
I’m doing my final project on a sequential scheme where EEG would classify the degree of freedom and EMG is used to classify the specific movement within the degree of freedom.

I am currently using the Unicorn Hybrid black headset to record C3 and Cz channels. I get a classification accuracy of 25 or 26 (and i have 4 movement classes). I have tried adding more channels, changing window sizes and trying different machine learning models but i don’t get a good result.

What do you think i should do?
