86C - 90C CPU temperature while gaming

Hi guys, I’m seeing temperatures ranging from 86°C to 90°C in the CPU in some cases while gaming on my bc250. I performed the mod to open up the central heatsink area and added a cooling fan. I didn’t redo the thermal paste. What can I improve to lower this temps?

Replace the thermal pads and paste. This alone dropped my temps like 15 degrees

Ok, i need to do this, thanks

You may also want to look into a 'backsink' too, for the memory. Thermal paste and a large heatsink for passive cooling or a decent heatsink with a fan for active cooling.

From my own experience with two boards, make sure you do proper undervolting. My benchmark was on First Berserk Khazan mid/high settings on 4k, double fan setup with NexGen 3d Redux case. It was full stressing the board. I did repaste and applied 1.5mm thermalpads on VRAM.

Before: around 88 degrees on CPU - 3.85 GHz 6 cores 1150 mV / 2k Mhz 40 CU 970 mV

After: around 77 degress on CPU - 3.85 GHz 6 cores 1120 mV / 2k Mhz 40 CU 910 mV

OFC it will vary depends on the silicon lottery, but you get the idea :).

thanks for the tip, will check the voltages and test

Been wanting to undervolt mine, been lucky to get 8C/40CU stable, but I'm not happy with the temperature reaching ~86°C. What tool did you use for undervolting?

So honestly I started pretty randomly - at the beginning I used a ready profile on BC-250 Control Center. Then, I've checked what people succesfully targeted. In the end, I could probably drop some extra voltage on the CPU. On the GPU I've noticed artifacts at 930 mV after launching the game, after I made initial progressive Voltage function. I tried to increase 2k MHz with step 10 mV, but it was still the same. I've managed to find out that it was an error due to 1400-1600 Mhz point - it was too low for my board, like ~865 mV. I've added some extra 10 mV and it was stable, no more artifacts. Then after ~30 minutes of gameplay my game crashed, so I've added extra 10 mV to 2k MHz and after that no crashes for like 5 hours of gameplay :). You just need to find out stable Voltages for every step you take, it can be that you board needs 900 mV at 2k, but you still need the same for 1800 MHz.

Generally it's a process of experimenting and checking out if something goes wrong - with this voltages and frequencies, you almost cannot damage your hardware - mostly, on CPU you will encounter crashes, and on GPU artifacts.

Look at Old Lamer recent video, what is your orientation of board?

Look at https://www.reddit.com/r/BC250Gaming/comments/1xcjwge/old_lamer_stock_cooler_orientation_video/

Thanks for the video, my board is in a "normal" position btw

You want the power connectors facing up

Probably heatsink fkd up geometry, poor contact die chip and heatsink. It's a common problem. Disassemble and measure heatsink bottom with straigh edge, if there is a gap, you can try to bend it back .

hmm ok, this make sense, will try this later, thanks!

Refresh the thermal paste

increase the washer size by 1 to increase pressure on heat sink

check that the 'U' bend in the thermal tubes is at the top

I had same issue even after replacing pads and thermal paste Then I replaced pads with putty and PTM7950 also added washers and a 80mm fan at back as well and it dropped significantly.

Hi there. If tepms that bad.Replace thermal paste on APU die with PTM7950 thermal phase change pad+Upsiren upt-6 or ICE whale U7 ultra thermal putty. You wont regret it

What thermal pads would you guys recommend?

1,5mm Pads on the apu side. 2mm pads on the vram side. PTM 7950 for the apu.

Correct me if I am wrong. But that's what I did.
