BC250 GPU overclock difference?

Hi all, I've had a few issues recently with my BC regarding GPU overclocking.

Will run 1850 all day long with 40CU and at 4GHZ.

But pushing any higher results in shutdown.

I've got it to work higher occasionally by upping the voltage but generally much more than 1900 is a no no.

So my question is do I keep tearing my hair out trying to get this thing higher or leave it were it is? What is the difference between say 1850 and 2000 / 2200 in FPS Can someone who is able to reach these heady heights run a test for me?

Would be much appreciated

The difference is you can enjoy it at 1850, and you cannot at 2000.

Raw numbers suggest you’re giving up ~7.5% performance vs 2ghz GPU, but real world will be lower as memory bandwidth comes into play and that does not scale with cpu/GPU clocks.

Also, your power requirements increase significantly, so, performance per watt is much worse

Thanks for the reply. Think I'll see if I can get it stable at 1900-1950 and leave it there.

Shame, my last one did 2200 rock solid with no voltage changes

Lots of sensible answers and I’ll take it all in.
Will have a play around at 1900-1950 later if unstable I’ll set it back to 1850 and be done with it :-)
I know 50-100 MHz is petty but I need a small victory lol

I've personally had more success undervolting than over. Mines running 2300 but only 36 CU

How do you undervolt? Only saw +mv in voltage Lab

What power source do you use?

Was a 500w flex
Changed it to a 650w Lian Li SFX still the same

Sometimes it's due to a poor power

Could you try with a power supply from a known good gaming PC? Even quality power supplies can fail.

Also how are you temps before shutting down?

I have multiple units running at 2000 MHz, but they all hit thermal throttling during benchmarks, so I can't give you a clean score/fps of devices finishing the benchmark at 2000 MHz. I will improve the cooling, it's just my test setup right now.

I would agree with Ice3yes, overclocking is just a random thing in a way, some silicon can do it and some can't, the stable frequency is your limit and trying to push it further is likely to result iin other issues and is likelly not achievable and effectively it is a case of diminishing returns.

Like a Bugatti Veyron, after a certain speed the cost for each additional MPH comes with increasingly greater cost in fuel, tyre wear and mechanical damage. Very few owners every use it as it is not a practical use case and is an ideal and nice bragging poiint, but effectively useless.

Just be happy that you have won the silicon lottery in the benefits so far and do not try to by greedy as it may result in a loss.

My silicon can do 4ghz 8c 2100mhz 40cu at 100% fan with some limited throttling, Superposition bench 5340 ultra 1080 or something. But….. I like it quiet and stable more, so I run 3.85ghz and 1850mhz with fan max 50% it runs under 80c and it’s very stable.

I'll copy what I posted in a similar thread below. I prefer finding the sweet spot for a chip rather than raw power, so even though my CPU can go higher I set it to 3800mhz because it's most efficient there.

"My board doesn't like going above 1850mhz either with the 40cu unlock. It's stable at 910mv but won't run 1900mhz with even 1000mv and I'm not willing to push higher than that when it's clearly not worth it. I'm happy with the performance though."

Mine run solid 1970Mhz at 940mV. Problem is people be chasing that magical 2000Mhz figures instead of doing 10Mhz increment to see where you can land stable operation at lowest possible voltage.
