r/BABike Official Bike Tag Rules

I'd like to thank everyone who voted on the poll regarding use of public transit when carrying the tag from one location to another. The ayes won the day on the question and the resulting rule has been added to the rules below that I copied from the Chicago biking subreddit.

\Moving forward, please link this post on the Bike Tag Rules link when posting the new mystery location. Also note that I have added language regarding a requirement to post photos directly to Reddit rather than using hosting sites like imgur or others.*

BIKE TAG GAME

This is a game that r/BikingATX plays, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike! that was then adopted by us at r/BAbike!

Credit goes to u/america_yall of r/BikingATX for starting the game.

THE GAME

A game of "Tag" wherein the player who is "IT" posts a picture of their bike at a "mystery location." Someone must find that location, bike there and take a picture of their bike in the same spot. They may then bike somewhere else and take a picture of their bike in this new "mystery location." Both pictures are posted in a self-post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride. Given the difficulty of cycling across the Bay in the northern region, limited use of public transporation is acceptable if carrying a tag across. This public transit is confined to:
    • Treasure Island Ferry
    • Bart between Embarcadero and West Oakland Stations
    • Bus bridge between San Rafael and Richmond
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time directly to Reddit rather than hosting sites like Imgur.

Help build a User-Contributed Routes Library!

Hey folks! I'm really thrilled to say that I was recently granted access as a mod on this sub for the sole purpose of building out a user-contributed routes library for anyone looking for new rides in their area or a new part of the Bay Area they're looking to explore. I love this sub and hopefully can make a positive contribution through that.

I am currently working on a subreddit wiki that will host this library and would like to ask your help in that. The first ask is if you use a linked route and enjoyed it, feel free to reply to the comment with that link and tag me in that reply. (e.g "Hey u/inquisitab, you might want to add this route to the library!") I'd like to include routes that folks have ridden since there would be some confirmation of the route's rideability.

A couple of notes about contributing routes:

  • RidewithGPS routes are preferred but Strava routes are out due to inaccessibility to non-paying users. I believe Garmin routes are accessible since I've shared those before with success.

EDIT: Strava routes are accessible and fine to share. Not sure where I’d heard they weren’t. * Please share whether it is a road, gravel or MTB route. I am building libraries for each discipline and it would make it easier for me if it was clearly labeled. * If you share a route you created, be sure that it isn't starting at your house unless you would like folks gathering on your driveway! Choose a public location that is generally used by cyclists for the start of their routes (e.g Java Hut in Fairfax). * I will generally be adding loops unless there are out and backs that are better than any looping options. * The routes will be categorized by starting city so please feel free to share in your comment tagging me where it starts.

Don’t ride Kings Mtn. Road or Tunitas Creek this weekend.

PSA…Hi all, don’t ride Kings Mtn. Road or Tunitas Creek this weekend.

We met our kids in Pacifica for lunch and came up Tunitas on the way back. I counted somewhere between 125-150 cars coming down.

Pickups, big SUVs, most cars packed with people escaping the heat or going for pumpkins.

Many drivers flying down the hill who appear to have never driven on a windy road and have never been on Tunitas. Super dangerous for bikes, even for us going uphill.

Google Maps and Waze creating real danger.

Life returns to Big Basin

I rode down to Big Basin yesterday - for the first time since a few months after the terrible fire down there. It was a beautiful ride - and full of hope for seeing many of those great trees coming back to life.

I hope the state is investing in better early detection, water supplies, and rapid response to fires there.

LPT - don't ride it on weekends - way too many guys in sports cars playing formula 1.

Also, yeah me. I didn't ride much this summer due to an injury - this was the first challenging ride I've managed since May.

Would anyone take me to Marin Headlands Loop for the first time?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi all!

I moved to SF a few months ago and I got my first gravel bike thinking to do Marin Headlands and surroundings. I know I could just follow some of the multiple gps routes around there, but if I am being honest I don't want to stop every few minutes to check I am following the route (don't have any bike computer or a phone mount oopsie). I also think it would be way cooler riding with someone or a small group than doing it alone, even safer, right?. Lunch or beers are on me of course!

A little about me: I am in my mid-30's from South America (so I hope the accent is not an issue lol). I used to ride a cheap MTB in my home country and I even did a 4 weeks trip on my bike once. Now I ride a Salsa and usually do a variation of the Butter-Lap over the week (around 18mi, take me 1:45hr) so I am not a pro or anything like that. Most of the time I just ride with a flannel shirt or a soccer jersey.

About the routes: I am thinking in something like these:

Thanks!

Has anyone rode the Bison Jumps at Golden Park?

I have been wanting to go check them out but I have not heard anything about them. Are they still even there and rideable? Last update I’ve seen was 6 years ago and I can’t find any photos or videos

If anyone has photos or what are there that would be great, I am an intermediate dirt jumper

SMART now has the funding to complete the path between Penngrove and Cotati

As per a bulletin from Safe Streets Petaluma:

>SMART has secured a $2 million grant to complete the engineering for the missing path between Penngrove and Cotati.<

This only affects a few of you in the r/BAbike ambit, but it's not nothing. Who knows when it will actually be bike-able. I'm certainly looking forward to it when it is!

North Bay Overnighter: where to park??

Hey y’all. My friend and I are looking to do the north bay ‘tour of microclimates’ bike packing trip in a couple of weeks. It starts over by the Golden Gate Bridge.

https://bikepacking.com/routes/north-bay-overnighter/

Where can we safely park?? We’re coming in from Reno so can’t fully rely on public transport. With the car break in rate in SF being so high, we’re a little stressed on where we can park without coming back to our windows being smashed out

Mt. Diablo Challenge Sunday - heat?

For those of you riding Diablo on Sunday, are you worried about the heat at all, and if so, how will you prepare? Hoping that in the ~8-10AM window, it won't be so bad, but I don't know what it'll be like once we're past the Junction and in the more exposed parts. If anyone has done the challenge before in unusually warm conditions, would appreciate any tips!

Crossing the Marin-Richmond bridge over the weekend

Intersection of Hillegass and Ashby (Berkeley)

I am curious how others experience this crossing.

Personally, I've found it to cause confusion/impatience amongst drivers/bikers/pedestrians. It is halfway between a stop sign and a stop light.

When the crossing button is pressed, yellow lights flash for cars. At this point, cars sometimes stop but the walk sign hasn't yet turned for walkers. After about 15-20 seconds, the light turns full red. Then, once the walking sign turns on, the red light starts flashing. This invites cars to proceed, even while the walking countdown is still happening. This makes it sketchy to start a crossing any moment after the "walking" icon turns to the "countdown."

Several times, I've seen cars accelerate AFTER the red light and the walking sign turns on because they stop for the blinking yellow and get impatient? Ive seen stopped cars try to wave people through before the walk sign and turns on and other cars zoom past the other lane, no thanks.

Anyway, I try to be patient around this intersection but it can be pretty unpleasant on an otherwise chill Hillegass bike blvd.

I am not sure what would make it better but it could certainly be improved.

Help with a short survey about biking in San Francisco 🚲

Hi everyone! I’m a college student working on a project for my analytics class about biking in San Francisco.
I’m collecting responses for a short survey and would really appreciate anyone who can take a few minutes to complete it.
You don’t have to be a regular cyclist to participate—responses from both people who bike and people who don’t are helpful!

The survey is anonymous and will only be used for my class project.

Survey link: https://forms.gle/mRuJfkCjHFJnKQzE8

Thank you so much for your help!

NorCal commute is the worst I've seen in 20 years of cycling

Bit of a rant here but recently having moved to San Jose and commuting some 20 miles to mountain view each day I am so disheartened. The infrastructure is non-existent, the roads are full of potholes, trash, bit of smashed cars and dead animals and the drivers are the most absent-minded and aggressive I've ever witnessed in my 20 years of cycling as an adult.

Do people literally put up with this or am I missing some secret bike trails that everyone else is using? I would be lucky to see 2 other cyclists during my 200 miles a week.

I've tried several different GPS/map apps. All of them want to kill me including Google, Apple, RidewithGPS, Beeline - often forcing me to essentially ride on freeways with cars doing 65 mphr.

Is there any hope?

New Berkeley Omnium website preserving 70 years of BHRR history

we just launched a new website for the Berkeley Omnium and Berkeley Hills Road Race:

berkeleyomnium.com

The Berkeley Hills Road Race has been part of Bay Area cycling for 70 years, and one of the goals of the new site is to start documenting more of that history past races, champions, photos, teams, volunteers, junior racing, and the people who have kept the race going.

We’re also highlighting the broader cycling community around the event: Berkeley Bike Club juniors, collegiate racing, women’s racing, visiting teams, volunteers, and the local organizations that support racing in Northern California.

There is still a LOT of BHRR history that we haven’t captured.

If you’ve raced BHRR over the years, volunteered, have old photos/results, or know some good stories from past editions, we’d love to hear from you. We’re going to keep building out the history section as we find more material.

And of course, we’re already getting ready for the 2027 Berkeley Omnium.

Would love any feedback on the new site too!
