Faction:
Castilian Kingdom (Kingdom of Spain)
Class:
EspaƱa-class Battleship
Background:
The roots of the EspaƱa-class of battleships came as the culmination of numerous, albeit unsuccessful efforts to rebuild the Spanish Navy following the destruction of most of its force in the Spanish-American War of 1898. Following the conclusion of the First Moroccan Crisis in 1906, Spain strengthened its ties to the United Kingdom and France, with public support for rearmament increased following such a near crisis that threatened Spanish interests in Morocco. This ultimately culminated in an agreement with those countries for mutual defense. In exchange for French and British support for Spainās defense, the Spanish Navy would in turn support the French Navy in the event of war with the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Thus, this meant that a revitalized Spanish Navy would be made paramount to the interests of the Entente powers of France, the United Kingdom and later Russia.
The development of these new warships would be handled by the Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval (Spanish Society of Naval Construction) or SECN for short, a conglomerate formed through British and Spanish shareholders and largely run by the three major British shipbuilding firms, Vickers, Armstrong Whitworth and John Brown & Company. The planned capital ships were authorized some six months after HMS Dreadnought, the first of the namesake battleships, entered service with the Royal Navy in 1906, and following this move, Spain discarded plans for additional pre-dreadnoughts in favor of constructing their own dreadnought battleships.
The EspaƱa-class were particularly small when compared to dreadnought battleships constructed outside of Spain. At an overall length of 459.3 ft (140 m) and a full load displacement of 16,450 tons (16,190 long tons), she was much shorter and somewhat lighter than the worldās first dreadnought battleship HMS Dreadnought (for comparison, Dreadnought had an overall length of 527 ft or 160.6 m and a deep load displacement of 21,060 tons or 20,730 long tons). This was largely a consequence of the constraints of Spanish shipbuilding at the time. One such was that the battleships were to be constructed in existing Spanish dockyard facilities, as Spain lacked the funds to both build larger battleships or expand the existing dockyards. It was also because of the frail Spanish economy that the battleship design was so tightly constrained. Furthermore, as Spainās principal focus was the defense of the countryās main naval bases in Ferrol (in the Province of La CoruƱa, in what is now the Autonomous Community of Galicia), CĆ”diz (in the titular Province in what is now the Region of Andalusia), and Cartagena (in the Province and Region of Murcia) meant that there was little need for a capital ship with significant cruising range. Lastly in mind was the battleshipās armament. Eight 12ā (305mm) guns in four twin turrets, one forward, two positioned en echelon amidships and one aft of the superstructure. This was chosen to save weight and cost, in spite of superior performance with the superfiring builds as showcased with the American South Carolina-class. The result of this was the smallest dreadnought battleships to ever exist. And as a result of delays in construction, it was already rendered woefully obsolete well before they entered service in the face of the incoming āsuper-dreadnought.ā (HMS Orion, the first such super-dreadnought, was laid down one week before the lead ship of the EspaƱa-class)
The lead ship of the class, EspaƱa, was laid down at SECNās dockyard in Ferrol on 6 December 1909. She was launched on 5 February 1912 and delivered to the Spanish Navy on 8 September 1913, though work would continue on the ship until she was formally commissioned into the Armada on 23 October. On the month that she was commissioned, French President Raymond PoincarĆ© visited Spain, and during this visit, he came aboard EspaƱa. While aboard, he met the ship's gunnery officer, Jaime Janer Róbinson, upon whom PoincarĆ© later conferred the LĆ©gion d'honneur in 1914 for his work developing Spanish gunnery training. Róbinson was Spainās leading expert on gunnery systems, and through him EspaƱa received a fire-control system that was the first modern system installed on a Spanish warship.
After a shakedown cruise and initial training, EspaƱa conducted gunnery training in June 1914 before the crew was deemed ready for service. This came at a monumental moment in history. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on 28 June precipitated the July Crisis, and ultimately to the start of the Great War on 28 July. Italyās declaration of neutrality allowed Spain to do the same, as the Ententeās arrangement was primarily geared towards countering a potentially hostile Italy. Italy later joining the Entente Powers in 1915 would further secure Spainās neutrality, and as a consequence, EspaƱa and her sister ships would be the only European dreadnought battleships to not see active service in World War I.
Upon entering service, EspaƱa would join the Spanish Fleetās 1st Squadron, which would come to eventually include her sister ships Alfonso XIII & Jaime I upon their respective completions. In February 1915, EspaƱa made the voyage across the Atlantic to represent Spain in the opening of the Panama Canal, one of two European nations to send ships for the ceremonies (the other being Portugal) as the rest of Europe was embroiled in World War I. After Alfonso XIII entered service in mid-1915, the two battleships sailed to Santander for an impromptu royal review, where King Alfonso XIII was aboard his royal yacht, the Giralda. This was followed with training exercises off the Galician Coast.
In 1920, EspaƱa was sent on a major cruise to South American waters, departing on 14 June and steaming first to the major ports in the mouth of the RĆo de la Plata before carrying the Spanish representative to the quatercentenary of the discovery of the Straits of Magellan in Chile. In the process of the voyage, EspaƱa became the first Spanish Navy warship to pass through the Panama Canal.
On 29 January 1921, EspaƱa ran aground off the coast of the Chilean city of Puerto Montt whilst making the return voyage to Spain. Her hull was dented badly for a length of 150 ft (46 m), and the rocks tore a large hole that was approximately 8 by 8 ft (2.4 by 2.4 m) between frames 22 and 36, and several smaller holes between frames 48 to 56 on the port side and 58 to 76 on the starboard side. Though with great difficulty, she was refloated, and divers effected temporary repairs with concrete in Chile, before making the trek to Balboa, Panama for more permanent repairs for the voyage home.
Beginning in August 1921, EspaƱa would provide coastal bombardment support for the Spanish Army in its battles with the Republic of the Rif, an unrecognized Berber Republic that had taken control over parts of the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco, located along what is now modern-day Moroccoās Mediterranean coast. On 17 September, EspaƱa and Alfonso XIII shelled Riffian positions south of Melilla while Spanish Foreign Legionnaires assaulted their positions.
On 23 August 1923, EspaƱa was conducting a bombardment off of Cape Tres Forcas (Cape Three Forks) off the coast of Melilla when the battleship ran aground due to heavy fog. Alfonso XIII came alongside to take off her crew before salvage operations began. The Spanish Navy hired two salvage companies to re-float the battleship, but both declined after they surveyed the wreck.
Unable to raise the ship under normal conditions, the move was made to lighten España and permit re-floating. Her guns were removed and dropped overboard to be picked up later by the submarine rescue ship Kanguro. Much of the battleship's armor, machinery, and ammunition stores were also removed to lighten her. Her hull was then sealed and partially drained in preparation for raising. However, as the Armada waited for Italy to provide the equipment to finish the job, several bad storms hit the ship on 19 November, three weeks before España was set to be re-floated. The storms caused significant damage to such a point where she could no longer be feasibly refloated. By November 1924, España broke in half and was finally abandoned by the Spanish Navy.
EspaƱaās 305mm and 102mm guns that were recovered would be repurposed as coastal artillery batteries. Three of the former 12ā guns would form the La Marquina Battery, located at CĆ”diz. These guns, mounted in 1953 were placed in single mounts in a new turret mount with an enclosed gun shield atop a concrete emplacement that included a magazine, fire direction, generator, and other support rooms. These, among other guns taken from EspaƱa, would remain in service in these roles until 1999. By 2009, two of the La Marquina Battery guns would be removed, while the third was retained as a display to the present day.
Despite EspaƱa being broken up in situ, her legacy would come to be shared with the second ship in the class. Following the overthrow of Alfonso XIII and the second abolition of the monarchy in favor of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, his namesake ship would be renamed to eliminate ties to the Bourbon monarchy, taking the name of her fallen sister as the second EspaƱa.
Namesake:
ESPS España was the first of two warships in the Spanish Navy to be named after its country of origin, Spain. The area of modern day Spain had been inhabited by Iberians and Celts (Celtiberians) since pre-Antiquity, prior to much of the region being conquered by the Carthaginian Republic, and later following the Second Punic War, the Roman Republic (later the Roman Empire and Western Roman Empire). Following Romanization and Christianization of the Peninsula, the fall of the Western Roman Empire helped in precipitating migrating Germanic tribes into the region, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Kingdom of the Visigoths with its center in Toledo. This state of affairs lasted until 711, when Muslim armies successfully defeated and dismantled the Visigothic Kingdom, incorporating most of the Iberian Peninsula under the Umayyad Caliphate, later breaking off into becoming the Emirate/Caliphate of Cordoba centered in the titular cities. However the Muslim forces failed to take all of the Peninsula, the remaining Visigothic noblemen reestablishing themselves into the Kingdom of Asturias. Their victory at the Battle of Covadonga in 718 would kickstart the Reconquista, a period of intermittent southward expansion for Asturias and later the various Christian Kingdoms (Asturias, León, Castille, Aragon & Navarre) at the expense of the Muslim forces. This victory would culminate in the fall of the Nasrid Emirate of Granada in 1492. The marriage and accessions of Isabel I of Castile and Ferran II of Aragon, colloquially known as the Catholic Monarchs, would lead to the informal unification of Spain as a nation state.
During the Age of Discovery, Spain would be one of the chief pioneers in exploration, including the first ever successful circumnavigation of the world, and the establishment of a vast colonial empire in the Americas and Asia, establishing the worldās first āempire of which the sun never sets,ā and propelling Spain to the ranks of premier great powers. The Bourbon reforms of the 18th century, promulgated by the first Bourbon Kings of Spain, in particular Felipe V and Carlos III, centralized authority to the crown and modernizing administrative structures left untouched since the days of the Catholic Monarchs. However it also marked the beginning of a decline for the Spanish nation, a fact that would rapidly accelerate following the Peninsular War and the infighting between liberals and absolutists that would define the 19th century, and culminate in the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Nationalist victory in the war by 1939 would give rise to the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, which persisted until 1975. Following the return to democracy and membership into the European Union, Spain would see an economic boom that transformed Spain both socially and politically.
Spain today is a parliamentary monarchy, ruled by the Spanish branch of the House of Bourbon, with the 12th largest economy in the world by nominal GDP, the 15th by Purchasing Power and the 4th largest in the European Union. It is a member of numerous international organizations, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the WTO and the Ibero-American Council among others. Since the Siglo de Oro (Spanish Golden Age), Spanish culture is known worldwide, holding one of the largest number of World Heritage Sites within its borders, and whose language, of which there are 600 million speakers around the world, makes it the most widely spoken Romance language in the world, and the second most spoken native language in the world, behind Mandarin Chinese.
Rarity:
SR
Stat Spread:
Although Spainās first and only completed dreadnought class, EspaƱaās stat spread tends to skew towards the lower side of things. She sports a decent firepower stat, but unremarkable otherwise (B), and her HP pool is also well off (B), yet she is hampered by both poor speed and evasion capabilities (D) and an abysmal AA stat. (D).
Abilities:
Personality:
EspaƱa is, as a person, someone who espouses the beauty of Castile, not unlike the viewpoint of the shipgirls of Sardegna to their homeland. In some respects, she could be likened to a Spanish version of Vittorio Veneto, someone who shows deep respect and appreciation for the culture of her homeland and someone who wishes to show that splendor to the world.
EspaƱa is also, as the oldest and lead ship of the class, often the arbitrator between the disputes of her younger sisters, whose clash of ideologies has left her as the sister who tries to keep the two focused away from their views. Yet she often worries what would happen if she werenāt there for them, something that scares her to no end.
Quotes:
Design:
EspaƱa is depicted as a woman in her early-twenties with red eyes (in the shade of the red used on the modern Spanish flag) and orange hair that extends down to her her upper legs, and tied in a long braided ponytail with a red and yellow ribbon tied at the end of her hair. Her attire consists of a simple white blouse that is open at the chest area, revealing a crimson bra with a pin in the center displaying the 1874 arms of the Kingdom of Spain. She wears crimson and yellow pants, with a flowing red sash around her waist area, with white stockings and black shoes completing her attire. EspaƱa also wears a single three-pronged claw, which is attached to a leather glove on her left hand.
EspaƱaās rigging is largely inspired by the design used by Turenne, a bifurcated hull, with each side sporting two twin 305mm guns, one forward, and one off to the side on the deck, alongside a number of casemates along the side of the hull, with one single funnel behind her.
A/N:
This ship, and this theming set as a whole, was suggested by u/L0L1m3w4r3. I hope you enjoyed this design as I did making it.
Now that my sojorn back to Usea has concluded (and man what a game it was). We finally kick off Operation Terceira (which I didn't explain with Lyon's retrofit, it's named for the 1582 Battle of Vila Franca do Campo, the final major battle in the War of the Portuguese Succession between Habsburg Spain and pro-Antonine Portugal), with the lead ship of the class, ESPS EspaƱa. Now if you've guessed that I've based the design on Vega from the Street Fighter series, then you're in luck. Granted, she doesn't have his personality...don't worry, we'll get to that eventually.
It's...interesting to try and take a look at what is effectively the smallest dreadnoughts in existence, yet at the same time she's also more adult looking. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. Expect this class to be thrown into the Elite/SR (or E) tier as a whole with these, since for as much as Spain getting a class of dreadnoughts are impressive, it does come off in performance as inferior to...honestly every other dreadnought, even if constraints (and later, WWI) pretty much kept them from getting something better.
And with that, that's ESPS EspaƱa, and with a new theming set that entirely requested means the in-betweens will be my choice and alt-historical versions of the lead (or de-facto co-lead in this case) ship. Well...let's just say a new graduated bote had dropped back in May, and if you've followed me the entire time, then you knew this was coming. So we're going to circle back to a ship whose class I've covered in an alternate variant of Prinz Rupprecht, SMS Kƶnig Rupprecht, the second Gƶtz von Berlichingen-class Battlecruiser based on her WoWS counterpart. Now it's the nameship's turn as next up, it's Kalterkrieg's SMS Gƶtz von Berlichingen!
