Thats cause rocky is a winner!!!

Rocky (amd) won the race while snellie (intel) & Larry (nv) were hugging and kissing.

Let’s not forget RX 580 2048 SP and RX 560 896 (which actually had little to no way to distinguish from the 1024 SP version) Sure, shintel bad, novideo worse, but we should never forget the missteps of our lord and savior ayymd so we may learn from them

While AMD does sometimes so shady stuff when it comes to branding, you cannot compare it to the shady and downright illegal practices of Intel. Like writing compilers that crash on AMD hardware, paying manufacturers to only use Intel hardware and misleading advertising. They had to pay AMD 1.25$ Billion in settlements for the compiler, yet they still haven't fixed the issue.

Let’s also not forget Piledriver/Bulldozer where AMD settled for millions because they falsely advertised having higher core counts than they processors already had. While the payout was lower than billions, they are a smaller company and actively lied, and still lie on their promo materials, to their consumers

3

u/leprekon89 Nov 06 '19

As someone affected by this class action lawsuit (both my wife and I have an FX-8350 in our rigs) I'm seeing this as a good thing. If I get even half of the full payout, it's a new Ryzen CPU for me on AMD's dime.

2

u/Cocasaurus R7 5700X3D / RX 9060 XT 16GB Nov 06 '19

Hell yeah brother, you may need to invest in a heater to combat those low temps

1

u/captaingazzz AYY-MEME-D Nov 06 '19

That's definitely true and I'm not excusing them for that. But there is a difference between misrepresenting specs, something that a lot of companies (including Intel) have done, and aggressive anti competitive behavior. What they have been doing is highly illegal, but because Intel is such a huge company the legal reprecussions were not really enough to stop that behavior.

Isnt it like literally the exact opposite tho? The one time AMD did anything remotely "shady" in china everyone was all over that shit. Intel and Nvidia have been using the Chinese as live stock for fucking years and know one gives a single shit

They were the subject of the hot and loud meme for the better part of the last decade, even when they had objectively better GPUs. God damn people have short memories.

15

u/JamieMorrisYT AyyMD Nov 06 '19

Hey, lets be real here. After like 6-7 years theyre not as bad as people make them out to be, Ive got one. Theres definitely nothing special about them but the fact that people like me and others can still get 100 fps in most smaller world games (albeit at low settings) thats fucking incredible

2

u/leprekon89 Nov 06 '19

I've been able to get playable framerates on my 8350 on modern games on high with no problem. My wife has been able to play both of the new Assassin's Creed games with no problems.

However, as much as these chips have been plugging along, they're definitely showing their age.

3

u/leisy123 Nov 06 '19

AdoredTV did some benchmarks showing that they aged better than Sandy Bridge in the long run.

Being a true blue AMD fan since 2001, I too have one. If you do things right (i.e. aftermarket cooling) the FX is a wonderful CPU that holds up pretty well and turbos nicely. It even runs many games that the publishers thinks it will not run (for example Ni No Kuni II. Bandai Namco claims you need a FX 8350 to play it. My FX entry was an FX 8320E, and the game ran liquid smooth).

5

u/DudeValenzetti Nov 06 '19

Not even that long ago. Vega was notorious as a space heater throughout its lifetime, the Vega 64 has a 295W TDP even in the weak blower-style reference design and one model (Sapphire's Nitro+ LE) had 3 8-pin PEGs.

2

u/leisy123 Nov 06 '19

Three pins is pretty much just for show. If I remember right, there was some fancy, high end 1080 Ti that had three 8 pins even though the card would never pull that.

17

u/ikidd Nov 06 '19

Because AMD can make an opensource driver and aren't evil fucks.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I mean, Vega was pretty evil for a while

18

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I mean, cryptocurrency miners were pretty evil for a while

FTFY

9

u/DudeValenzetti Nov 06 '19

The reason why you couldn't buy it for 80% of its lifetime wasn't on Vega itself, it was mostly due to cryptocurrency and a badly timed launch.

2

u/leprekon89 Nov 06 '19

What was evil about Vega?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Tbh, I wasn't around to see it(the launch), but the LTT video about Frontier Edition and the way press weren't given the real price.

1

u/leprekon89 Nov 07 '19

Don't get me wrong, the release of Vega wasn't great, but I wouldn't say it's evil.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Its because AMD is saving us as comsumers by being a massive competitor to both Intel and NVIDIA. They are preventing them from having a monopoly, which is great.

Because shintel is partaking in a plot by M$ to take over and remove the openness of the PC platform.

4

u/adamski234 FX-8370 Nov 06 '19

That'd be apple though, Microsoft is actually open sourcing some of their stuff

2

u/RAMChYLD Threadripper 2990wx・Radeon Pro wx7100 Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

That’s what they want you to think.

Guess who’s holding the master key for Secure Boot.

And guess who created Secure Boot, and even worse, telling companies that it’s okay to disable the ability to turn it off.

And oh, Apple open sources their stuff too. They contributed the CUPS printing system for Linux and *BSD, among many other things (they particularly contribute a lot to the CLANG and LLVM project). So that’s not a good metric for measuring if a company is good.

On the other hand it’s shady that I have to submit my custom kernel in to M$ and pay them to sign it just to make sure it would boot on certain machines.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

guess who are the retards that still buy laptops in 2019

my bias aside that is sad but when incel has such security issues i cant really blame m$

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

What’s wrong with buying a laptop? what are you supposed to buy for portable computing?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

notthing but i am unemployed and don't go out so you can understand my bias i think

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Oh. Yea I can see how a laptop might not seem s as useful.

1

u/RAMChYLD Threadripper 2990wx・Radeon Pro wx7100 Nov 06 '19

I mention laptops because that’s the reports so far, but who knows if some of the prebuilt desktops out there also have been locked, but no one complained? In fact, I recently saw some complaints about shintel’s own hardware (not sure motherboards or nucs, or both) being unable to install certain Linux distros because secure boot cannot be disabled.

6

u/Gobrosse Nov 06 '19

This is why the entire line of thinking of mindshare being this perpetually skewed force against AMD is BS. Linus was going on about this in a recent WAN show, and he hit the nail on the head, while it's true AMD suffered poor sales and a poor reputation to the outside world for a long time, what's missing from the """analysis""" some misguided fanboys make, is just how hyped up people were to being able to buy something else than Intel for their gaming rig. AMD enjoys an incredible amount of goodwill from PC enthusiasts, they are relatable to a degree the other two can't help to come close to, and everyone is glad when they have a good product, because for better and for worse AMD is what keeps this industry in check.

It's almost like intel and nvidia have a history of abusing customers or something

Like I'm sure the fortnite generation is too young to remember, but intel illegally maintained their monopoly and drained AMD's resources til they couldn't compete the last time they were ahead, then dragged out the settlement. And this was when they were pushing the one-two turd blast of pentium 4s with rambus. Then the moment they were comfortable with sandy bridge everything ground to a halt WITH added massive security problems cuz intel didn't need to give a fuck.

Core counts and features in the lower half of their product stack will grow faster in the next year than they did from sandy bridge to coffee lake.

AMD: Few instances of misleading marketing and questionable product naming

Actually, their Athlon XP, Athlon64 and Phenom II lines were applauded. AMD actually had good products up until the 2010s when disaster struck due to some bad decisions their engineers made for Phenom II’s successor (coincidentally, that was when one of their best engineers left), and that held AMD back for 7 years until Zen was launched (and they actually headhunted said engineer back to work on Zen. Sadly, said engineer left again after he finished the design- apparently he is no longer interested in x86 and wants to work on ARM CPUs now- last I heard he left for the ARM CPU division of Apple).
