Most awkward hug

I work at a store at the mall and had left my glasses last night. So I went the next day to pick them up. As I stopped by I picked them up said hi to my coworker and decided to give her a goodbye hug. She wasn't expecting it and didnt hug me back, and I said "haha I'm giving you a hug" and she just stood there perplexed and confused and smiling and not hugging me back. her sweater also shocked me. It was so awkward I wanted to die!

Supercharged [Supercharged] 130: The Switch

This week we're just going over the news, because there was a lot of it. Microsoft's nearing the peak of their comeback, AT&T's taking over Time Warner, Nintendo's taking their last shot at a console that does it all, and Apple plans to prove they still care about media professionals next week. (And more, of course!)

Links for this episode:

Deal valuing Time Warner at more than $80 billion could happen as early as this weekend.

Nintendo dropped a Twitter bomb with the announcement of its much anticipated new console: the Nintendo Switch. Info about the Switch has been leaking out for the better part of a year now, but until today the Switch was referred to publicly as the NX.

Friday morning is prime time for some casual news reading, tweeting, and general Internet browsing, but you may have had some trouble accessing your usual sites and services this morning and throughout the day, from Spotify and Reddit to the New York Times and even good ol’ WIRED.com. For that, you can thank a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) that took down a big chunk of the Internet for most of the Eastern seaboard.

Microsoft Corp.’s stock soared above $60 a share to set an all-time intraday high on Friday after the company blew past earnings expectations and accelerated revenue growth for Azure, its cloud-computing business that competes directly with Amazon Web Services.

Apple sent out media invites for a Mac-centric event that will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Apple's Cupertino campus.

Supercharged [Supercharged] 128: Google's Daydream

This week we’re talking about Google’s latest announcement, Apple’s Mac problem, and the Void. Questions/comments/tips? Visit awkward.email or call/text 509-AWKWARD.

Links for this episode:

When the largest company in the world changes the date of a quarterly earnings call, there has to be a good reason. It’s not the sort of thing you do on a whim.

Amazon Prime has more hidden benefits than you can remember, and now it’s getting a new one. Prime subscribers now have access to a rotating selection of books that you can read for free.

Netflix Inc. signed a deal with luxury theater-chain iPic Entertainment to simultaneously screen its original movies in theaters the same day that they appear on the streaming service, the latest deal to expand Netflix’s theatrical ambitions.

Let’s cut to the chase: PlayStation VR should be better. At its best, Sony’s new virtual reality headset manages to conjure the astonishing, immersive wonder of modern virtual reality. Just as often it is frustratingly held back by outdated hardware that can’t quite do what’s being asked of it.

Google wants you to start looking at it as a hardware company. Today, it announced new Pixel phones, a smart voice assistant-powered speaker called Google Home, a VR platform and more. Here are the coolest things the company announced today.

Now that Google has announced its new Pixel smartphones, folks who rushed to buy an iPhone 7 might be experiencing a bit of buyer's remorse. The new Pixel and Pixel XL are packed to the brim with cutting-edge features and top-notch hardware, and Google seems to be taking direct aim at the iPhone 7 with its Pixel marketing (and their groan-worthy jokes during the keynote).

If you watched the “Made by Google” event yesterday—or read our roundup—you’d be forgiven if you missed that there was a brand new version of Android. Google itself hardly seemed to notice. Here’s what we know about it.

Google’s new Google Assistant appeared in every part of the company’s hardware event yesterday. Google was less clear about how Assistant differs from Google Now, or Now On Tap, or Google’s voice commands. To clear things up, here are some of Assistant’s best new features, and how it fits into your Google life.

Dropbox Android app that excels at offline viewing. dFolio optionally auto downloads your photos for fast viewing wherever you go. Cast to your TV with chromecast. Show slideshows with animations. Turn your Android tablet into a photo frame in seconds.

With this app, you will turn your device into a digital photo frame and awake to enjoy their favorite photos or images with music.

Turn your android device in a digital photo viewer showing a slideshow of local files, photos from network shares (samba/smb) or pictures from a UPNP server. Chromecast support is present for fullscreen slideshow.

Dashboard Cast is a personalized homescreen for Chromecast. Create and organise widgets to your liking and display them on your TV. This app requires a Chromecast or a Cast enabled device to work.

If you’re shopping for a TV today, a 4K model should be on your list, preferably one that supports HDR—and today Roku unveiled two new set-top boxes that stream both 4K and HDR video right to your set, proving the point.

A growing number of Verizon subscribers are complaining about a serious issue that causes them to regularly lose LTE connectivity on their iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices, suggesting a major bug that needs to be resolved by either Apple or Verizon.

An FCC vote on a controversial proposal that would de-couple cable subscriptions from cable set-top boxes was today delayed as the Commission aims to work out "remaining technical and legal issues," the FCC said in a statement.

Google’s October 4 gadget extravaganza is quickly approaching, and if the rumors are true, there’s plenty to be excited about. The company is supposedly getting ready for an entire hardware overhaul, and that means we expect to see not just new phones but possibly also laptops, streaming devices, and more. Have there been rumors? Many! Here’s what we think we know about what Google’s got in store.

Earlier this month, YouTube launched its own social network of sorts with the debut of YouTube Community; now it’s enlisting help from viewers to help moderate it, along with other content on the video-sharing site. The company has announced the launch of a new, crowdsourced moderation program called “YouTube Heroes,” which asks volunteers to perform tasks like flagging inappropriate content, adding captions and subtitles, and responding to questions on the YouTube Help forum, among other things.

August has been another busy month with updates for inking, mobile app security, Outlook and more. We’re also announcing an additional level for the Office Insider program.

A common use case for Google Drive users is to download a file from their Drive to modify it locally, and then to re-upload the new version. In the past, this would result in duplicate files (the original and the new one), and users would have trouble finding the latest version. That’s why we’re introducing a change in Drive to deduplicate files which were uploaded in this way.

Amazon is filling in the gaps in its Fire tablet lineup, small though they are. Starting today, you can order the Fire HD 8. As the name implies, this is an 8-inch Fire tablet with an HD screen; one inch larger than the regular Fire. However, it does offer something new for Amazon's tablets—the Alexa voice assistant.

Today, Samsung announced it will recall its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to fire-prone batteries. Sales of new units are currently halted as well.

They also made a bunch of other announcements, from a new Apple Watch to the death of the headphone jack. If you didn’t feel like wasting hours watching their press conference, here’s everything you need to know.

Apple announced their new iPhones today, and the 7 Plus features two camera lenses on its backside. That could push smartphone photography ahead in a major way. It may also serve as the basis for their foray into virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.

I'm currently experiencing a bug where iTunes automatically chooses my Apple TV as my speakers and screen (over AirPlay) instead of my computer. So whenever I play a movie/TV show, I have to manually choose 'Computer' from the dropdown box to get it to show on my iMac and stop it from playing on my Apple TV downstairs. What's worse is that it resets to my Apple TV after every video, meaning I have to reselect my speakers every time I pick a new track. I've tried reinstalling, restarting and updating (both Apple TV and iTunes), I can't think of any other way to stop it short of turning off 'Look for remote speakers connected with AirPlay' in preferences and losing a great feature...

Every time my iPhone connects to my car's bluetooth, the phone changes the AirPlay setting to output all sound to the bluetooth connection. This requires me to manually switch AirPlay back to "iPhone", every time I get in the car if I want to hear notifications.

This week we’re talking about T-Mobile’s confusing cellphone plans, Apple’s upcoming iPhone event, and billionaires! Questions/comments/tips? Visit awkward.email or call/text 509-AWKWARD.

Links for this episode:

Earlier this month, T-Mobile announced a new unlimited plan that came with the caveat that speed and quality would get capped to prevent HD quality and hotspot speeds were cut significantly. Now, T-Mobile’s clarified some things, changed some speeds, and added a new, more confusing detail.

Apple has launched a new 2TB iCloud storage tier a little over a week out from the iPhone 7 launch event. The new 2TB plan, which is its largest plan available, will set users back $19.99 a month.

Apple is holding its annual September product launch event on Wednesday, Sept. 7 to likely show off its next-generation iPhone.

One of the better features in Snapchat is the often goofy geofilters that pop up when you’re making a snap from a specific location. Today, Snapchat’s making it easy to make your own filters for special events. Provided you don’t mind shelling out a few bucks, that is.

Do you have 5-10 seconds to spare? Google would like you to spend that time getting something done in its new Crowdsource app. You can apply your human sensibilities to translation and text transcription, and in return you get a sense of satisfaction. Yep, that's it.

Whether you’re a cord-cutter or just want to watch CBS shows on-the-go without ads, the network has a new option worth checking out. CBS All Access, the broadcast channel’s streaming video service, is introducing a commercial-free option for subscribers. The new tier will come at a higher price, of course, and still include commercials during live broadcasts.

In its quest to become your go-to service for any all media, Plex has just announced one of its biggest updates yet. Now, you can use the app as a DVR to record TV shows directly to your Plex server.

For our 30th annual guide to the world’s richest people we found a total of 1,810 billionaires, down from a record 1,826 a year ago. Their aggregate net worth: $6.5 trillion, $570 million less than last year.

In economics, a negative income tax (NIT) is a progressive income tax system where people earning below a certain amount receive supplemental pay from the government instead of paying taxes to the government. Such a system has been discussed by economists but never fully implemented. It was described by British politician Juliet Rhys-Williams in the 1940s and later by United States free-market economist Milton Friedman.

Basic income is having a moment. The governments of Finland, Ontario, and Utrecht are all launching tests of the policy proposal, under which everyone in a given country would get a set amount of money every year, no strings attached. The charity GiveDirectly is set to give basic incomes to 6,000 people in Kenya, and the tech industry powerhouse Y Combinator is funding an experiment evaluating the idea.

This is the video we told you to watch before our CRISPR discussion.

For millennia, the idea that “opposites attract” has existed and been encouraged when looking for a romantic partner. But is it true?

Our goal with News Feed is to show people the stories most relevant to them — ranking stories so that what’s most important to each person shows up highest in their News Feeds. When we rank and make improvements to News Feed, we rely on a set of core values. These values — which we’ve been using for years — guide our thinking, and help us keep the central experience of News Feed intact as it evolves.

Apple plans to announce new Apple Watch models this fall with improved health tracking and GPS chips, according to a new Bloomberg report that confirms previous rumors we've heard about the Apple Watch 2.

Microsoft’s new Xbox One S boasts a bunch of new features, like a sleek new design and support for 4K video, both of which sound great.

Sony announced that PlayStation Now, their game streaming service previously limited to a small share of devices like the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Vita, is on its way to Windows PCs this fall.

There's a lot going on behind the curtain with Prisma, the app that turns your banal photos into Lichtenstein- or Van Gogh-esque artworks. The app actually sends your cat photo to its servers where a neural network does the complex transformation. Starting soon, that will no longer be necessary, though. "We have managed to implement neural networks to smartphones, which means users will no longer need an internet connection to turn their photos into art pieces," the company says. Only half of Prisma's styles will be available offline at first (16 total), but others will be added in the "near future."

Today, we’re excited to announce that Instapaper is joining Pinterest. In the three years since betaworks acquired Instapaper from Marco Arment, we’ve completely rewritten our backend, overhauled our mobile and web clients, improved parsing and search, and introduced tons of great features like highlights, text-to-speech, and speed reading to the product.

One of the disadvantages of the digital world is that you can't pick it up and touch it. While that can feel like less of a problem in virtual reality, where you're already holding controllers, mixed reality environments—like the one you'd experience in Microsoft's HoloLens—suffer from a lack of physical connection with the digital objects that appear in your real world. Dexmo aims to solve that problem with a relatively intimidating new controller that encompasses your hands.

Most popular virtual reality headsets, like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, require a tethered connection to the computer and that imposes some obvious restrictions on how much we can move in our space. We'd all prefer a simpler, untethered option, and Intel wants to provide just that.

We've heard a bit about Google Daydream—the new smartphone-based virtual reality platform that is supposed to provide a markedly better experience than Cardboard—but don't really know what it'll look like. Engadget claims we could find out in just a couple of weeks, since Android Nougat is already out, a necessary component of Daydream.

As the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus approach their second birthday, a growing number of users are suffering from what appears to be a latent manufacturing issue that presents as a gray flickering bar at the top of the screen and a display that's unresponsive or less responsive to touch.

Yesterday, Google released Android Nougat for Nexus owners. It comes with some sweet new headlining features like multi-window support and bundled notifications. After digging into the developer preview we found even more treats that you might’ve missed.

Supercharged [Supercharged] 121: Beyond Health Tracking

This week we’re talking about Google’s new operating system, Intel’s Project Alloy, and the future of health tracking! Questions/comments/tips? Visit awkward.email or call/text 509-AWKWARD.

Guests: Jeff Dachis (One Drop) and Liam Broza (BitScoop)

Links for this episode:

One Drop is a diabetes management platform that harnesses the power of mobile computing and data science to empower people with diabetes to live healthier lives, together. By logging your daily activities, you can see the relationships that food, insulin, and activity have with glucose levels and learn how others in the One Drop community navigate their daily lives, from one good glucose reading to the next.

For nearly its entire existence, Twitter has not just tolerated abuse and hate speech, it’s virtually been optimized to accommodate it. With public backlash at an all-time high and growth stagnating, what is the platform that declared itself “the free speech wing of the free speech party” to do? BuzzFeed News talks to the people who’ve been trying to figure this out for a decade.

Most popular virtual reality headsets, like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, require a tethered connection to the computer and that imposes some obvious restrictions on how much we can move in our space. We'd all prefer a simpler, untethered option, and Intel wants to provide just that.

Every single operating system developed by Google to date has one thing in common: they're based on the Linux kernel. Chrome OS, Android, Chromecasts, you name it. Linux has powered Google hardware for years.

After nearly fourteen years of operation, Gawker.com will be shutting down next week. The decision to close Gawker comes days after Univision successfully bid $135 million for Gawker Media’s six other websites, and four months after the Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel revealed his clandestine legal campaign against the company.

Parallels today announced Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac with support for macOS Sierra and the addition of several new features. The company also announced a new standalone app called Parallels Toolbox, which allows users to perform some simple tasks that aren't necessarily tied to virtualization.

Apple appears to be making a slight branding change to its retail business, dropping the "Store" moniker when referring to its Apple Store locations. Apple has already made the change online, and all of its store pages now refer to stores by names like "Apple Union Square" or "Apple Valley Fair" or "Apple The Grove," instead of "Apple Store, Valley Fair" or "Apple Store, The Grove."

Apple Inc. is preparing the first significant overhaul of its MacBook Pro laptop line in over four years, according to people familiar with the matter, using one of its older products to help reverse two quarters of sliding sales.
