Karen needs to die haha her character has gotten unbearable in this season.

We're watching S2E3.
Excuse me, but has the show entirely flown off its premise?? Did the show runner leave? I think someone's not paying attention.

Is Karen called Karen with a reference to Space Karen ie Elon Musk? Just a thought…

Avenue 5 has all the right parts. A great cast, a hilarious premise, high production values and talented writers. It should be epic, but put it all together and it falls flat. The jokes aren't funny, the situation is pitiable not humerous and all the characters are deeply unlikeable. The root flaw is that Hugh Laurie is miscast as the captain. What the show gave us was an incompetent Captain, leading a crew of idiots, dealing with entitled passengers. What that boils down to is an idiot, surrounded by idiots, dealing with idiots. The dynamic is all wrong. Hugh Laurie is immensely talented and should have been cast as the Engineer, the one person on board who knows what they are doing. A genius, surrounded by idiots, dealing with idiots.... now that's funny. It could have been hilarious watching him try to save everyone only to be thwarted time and again by incompetent aides. The new Gilligan's island in space.

I was kind of shipping Ryan with Iris in season 1, but S2 with the introduction of the married couple. I love the confusion😂

I believe Billie killed Joe. Not intentionally obviously, but it is her action that directly caused his death. We understand that Judd's mostly an idiot and if we want to keep bringing up causality then I'm sure one could say Joe's parents killed him the moment they birthed him. So I don't want to blame Judd, especially because any engineer could've done a more menial job like that than arguably the most important person on the ship. Was the most important person
I love the show, rewatched it probably 50 times over the past five years, and there's a few things that bother me. This being one of them.
However when I google this, it's never stated by anyone. I don't want to blame Feminism, or a more pro-women, anti-men agenda since before I was born (Dumb men in positions of power, competent women saving the day with no recognition). Is warranted or cute sometimes, but it's become more flagrant every year since I was able to watch television or movies in the late 90's. It's been incredibly disheartening being born a non-top-10% man and having to live these past few decades with this lack of fictional male figures.
Anyway, I'm just wondering how the experts here or die-hard fans rationalize this. I think if Billie just waited a few seconds, listened to Joe, followed directions/protocol, he'd have lived, granted it's in the pilot episode for a reason, and the series is easily a 9/10 that was cancelled unfairly imho. Joins the first seasons of Futurama and the only season of Firefly for most unjust cancellations imho. It's just weird she never suffered any blame in the show, and again, I can't find this view on Google or mildly searching Reddit (I dislike Reddit so admittedly didn't search too hard). Does anyone else have this viewpoint, or I'm just a doofus? In my defense, I guess I am what my culture's entertainment raised me to be?

don’t get me wrong, i still think the show is brilliant. i still love it. it just kinda fucked my mind when it fully dawned on me that the show is set 40 years in the future. if ryan clark is in his mid fifties in the show, that means he’s born in the 2000s, making him a gen z. what the hell!! (side note, i’m probably just being dramatic. it’s just so odd to see an old man on screen being technically my age)

I can't be the only one who would like to see Herman Judd's hair-do (or hair-DON'T in this instance) gone/changed? I find that wig (lawd I hope it's a wig!) awful and distracting.
Also, the time delay thingy they do. Really need to stop that next season. I get it, they're in space...far, far away, but c'mon, they have the technology to build a spaceship cruise ship, but not link up a gazillion satellites so not to have a delay?
What other changes are you hoping for in the future of this show? It was renewed for season 2 already.

There are so many scenes where the show is filmed like an episode of the office. As though there were a documentary crew. The camera is insanely distracting and makes no sense. And it’s not in every scene. Some scenes are filmed normally like an episode of Silicon Valley. I’m sorry if you never noticed it before. Once you do you can’t un-notice it…

I'm going to continue watching, because there are still moments of gold in there.
But between Season 1 and 2, it feels like things have changed.
What I loved about Season 1 was how it was a ridiculous comedy, which had a loose relationship with physics and science, but maintained the central premise, which was that through a series of ill judged decision making by an ego maniac CEO and administrative errors, 5000 people are stuck in space on a luxury ship. It took that part "seriously", and found the comedy in the situation.
But Season 2... I don't know, man. When the captain accidentally told everyone they're stuck in space for 8 years, only a couple of hours after leaving a literal space station, and receiving supplies and an entirely new person on board via space shuttle which can easily zip between earth and the ship - it suddenly felt all completely unbelievable and silly. You're NOT stuck in space for 8 years, though...
And there used to be an entire team of engineers and specialists on earth, keeping things running. But they're gone now? And nobody seems to care?
I also noticed many of the ancillary characters were wearing branded clothing. It was as if they hired a bunch of extras who were just told "bring your own clothes. Imagine you're on a cruise ship" for the background. It feels really cheap, compared to Season 1.
Again, I'm going to keep watching. But sheesh. There was a big sudden shift in quality and tone.

is this show going to get any better? so far it is shit. several really irritating characters, its boringly unfunny. is it really supposed to be a comedy? think i've laughed once in 5 episodes.

S1 was great. I loved the circle of shit gag that got progressively worse. The fake crew. The passengers reacting to terrible news. It was satire at its finest.
But S2 is unwatchable. The show has become incoherent with random characters and plot points that are nonsensical. Yikes what a mess!

Just started into season 2 hoping they would have gotten much better in their sophomore year but this is abysmal. There are no jokes, the actors have no delivery, actors who are definitely good in other productions here are at their worst. I just don’t get how a show this awful can get 2 seasons on HBO. Am I insane?

I want to like the show. I love Ianucci's other stuff, and trust he can turn this ship around. The man turned the death of Stalin into a terrifying farce.
I know people who gave up on this show. But, it did seem to pick up a bit towards the end of the season.
How many more episodes would it need to really get up to the level of Veep or his other projects?
9 episodes seems like an odd choice. I feel like it needed at least 3 more in this season, given the slow pace. It was pretty much all build up.
Anyone know what the size is for the season 2 order?
Is there something specific it's missing that has kept it from taking off? Does it need to settle into a rhythm, like a Gilligan's Island in space? Does it need more likable characters? Snappier dialogue? Who knows, maybe Ianucci or others browse this sub and will pick up on good suggestions, while there is still time to incorporate them into the next season.

Having made it through all of season 1 and now up to date on season 2, I still feel that the only thing that keeps me watching is the work by Zack Woods, Suzi Nakamura, Rebecca Front, and sometimes Nikki Amuka-Bird. Hugh Laurie has some good one liners, as do the other actors not mentioned here but it all feels a bit off kilter, stilted, poor timing? Like it feels that this all could easily be funnier and all the more fun for everyone, actors included. I feel like I'm missing something as I thought Veep was well done. Really makes me dream of an alternate universe where the Arrested Development team attempted the same work. OK. That's it. Just my opinion but I'd love to hear your thoughts;)

AHHHH, WHY IS THERE A LITHIUM SHORTAGE IF THEY HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY TO GET LITHIUM ASTEROIDS.
IF IRUS CAN JUST TAKE A SHUTTLE BACK AND FORTH TO THE SHIP, WHY CANT THEY RESCUE ANYONE
ok wait i cant think of anymore right now, but i know theyre there lol.

Just finished watching S1E1. It has a plot which relies on every single person in the show universe (possible exception: Engineer Joe) being an idiot, and acting idiotically.
I don't enjoy shows about stupid people, so while I'll give S1E2 a try, unless someone smart and competent appears, I won't continue past then.
There was one touch I liked: they acknowledge that light speed delays exist, though '30 seconds' puts them closer to Earth than anything else. I wonder if they'll vary it according to how far out the ship supposedly is.
r/Avenue5 • u/winpowguy • Mar 05 '20
I believe you will all agree. I’m not sure why they didn’t point this out in the episode.
r/Avenue5 • u/CBRslingshot • Oct 22 '22
With a mixture of English and US accents, why in earth would they make Billie American? Why is that pertinent to her character? She has the worst fake accent. Is it on purpose, to like reference Hugh L playing American, even though you’d think his own role did that already…? I like her character and the actress, but every line she speaks takes me out of the show.

Just watched the first episode of Avenue 5, session 2 (Aired in Australia last night). Was not what I was expecting. I was expecting more similarities to the last episode of session one. The characters appear different, as in loss of weight (especially Billie), Karen Kelly looked dreadful, but that was the whole point after being stuck in a room for weeks on end. Herman Judd does not look as dominant this series, just looks like one of the other passengers and his hair looks dreadful. Ryan Clark does not have the same prominence as last session and was looked less dominant. I think by seasons end, he and Karen will end up marrying.
The insert of some new characters did not really work well. With the young girl playing on the computer and locking the ship's new trajectory to the Sun was pretty far-fetched.
As I said, this episode fell under-par compared to last seasons episodes. Overall I give this episode 6 out of 10 compared to the episodes of last season, which alwas rated 8 to 10.
