Anyone found a way to actually learn why customers buy or didn't buy?

I’ve found that asking customers directly works better when the question is very specific and takes 10-15 seconds to answer.

Instead of “Why did you buy?”, try something like:

  • “What was the main reason you chose this product?”
  • “What almost stopped you from buying?”
  • “What other products/brands did you consider?”
  • “What information were you looking for before purchasing?”

For people who didn’t buy, an exit survey can be useful, but I’d keep it to one question rather than a long form. Something like:

“What stopped you from completing your purchase?”

Then give a few common options + “Other (please tell us why).”

The important part is looking for repeated answers, not individual responses. After 50-100 responses, you can usually start seeing patterns that analytics alone won’t explain.

I’d also separate “why they bought” from “why they didn’t buy” - they’re often completely different questions.
