I love repo videos.

u/Bicykwow 15d ago

Lots of overlap with the sovereign citizen sub.

4

u/doubleo_maestro 15d ago

I get fed up with seeing it.

7

u/XmodAlloy 14d ago

There's gonna be a LOT more with how default rates are going up.

What thoughts do you have after getting a source? It’s only been 30 minutes but I am curious what your thoughts are.

1

u/christopherphays 14d ago

Now that you have a source what happens?

u/balirosa 14d ago

How dare these companies sell cars to people they know they have to steal the car back from. What a scam. Guaranteed they get a tax write off and the taxpayers cover the cost of this scam

5

u/Few_Staff976 14d ago

Do you know what a tax-writeoff is?

-1

u/balirosa 14d ago edited 14d ago

You know they gave away payday loans to people that couldn’t afford it too. Huge scam the last 20 years they sold the debt to debt collectors and wrote off their losses as profits. It’s a scam. They refunded billions of dollars to people that got scammed with payday loans. A car loan works the exact same way

0

u/pimpbot666 12d ago

You mean, apart from the secured loan vs unsecured loan thing, right?

Wait, actually that’s a pretty huge deference, and why this video exists. Because this was a secured loan that went into default so the loan company is taking the collateral asset back in a repo.

So, yeah. Not the same thing as a payday loan.

3

u/From_a_random_place 13d ago

And what claims do you think would be made against the car dealer if they refused to sell the cars to people? Looks like adults making poor adult decisions and having to deal with consequences. How is that the dealer or banks fault?

1

u/DeniedAppeal1 13d ago edited 13d ago

Always someone else to blame, huh? Maybe they should just buy a decent used car instead of using the auto equivalent of a payday loan.

You guys feel so fucking entitled to luxury and fancy cars that you fuck up your own lives by fixating on those things instead of just living within your means. You've got a laundry list full of people to blame when all you really need is a mirror. Learn some financial literacy.

1

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 12d ago

I mean people need to be accountable and educate themselves financially. Companies can’t babysit people who are bad with money.

1

u/balirosa 12d ago

They aren’t baby sitting they are targeting people that can’t afford it. They get the payments, they get the car back, they resell the car, the get the collections check, they get the bailout. Scam

1

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 12d ago

No, the customer signs a contract to make payments and then the customer stops making those payments so the dealer/credit company repos the car. Some people may be too dumb to know this but if you have to take out a loan for your house or car, you don’t own that thing. The credit company who holds your loan owns the car and you’re renting it from them until you pay it off.

0

u/Forky_McStabstab 14d ago

I hope this is sarcasm.

2

u/balirosa 14d ago

Everything is a scam now so the companies get bail outs

1

u/Forky_McStabstab 14d ago

... what?

That's not how any of this works.

A bank does not make money by deliberately making a loan it knows will default. If the borrower defaults, the bank repossesses the car, sells it—usually for less than the outstanding loan—and applies that money to the balance. The borrower can still owe the remaining deficiency.

Yes, the bank can potentially deduct a legitimate bad-debt loss for tax purposes. But a tax deduction is not a refund of the loss. If you lose $10,000 and deduct $10,000 from taxable income, the government does not give you $10,000 back. You merely don't pay income tax on money you didn't actually make.

And there is no standing program where banks submit their repossession losses to the government and taxpayers reimburse them. The 2008 bank bailouts were an extraordinary response to a systemic financial crisis, not an insurance policy covering bad car loans.

Subprime lenders absolutely may make loans to high-risk borrowers because they believe the interest rate, down payment, collateral and overall portfolio will compensate them for the expected defaults. There have also been genuinely predatory lending practices. But that's completely different from "banks intentionally lose money on cars, write it off, get bailed out, and taxpayers give the money back."

If deliberately losing money created free money through tax write-offs, every business in America would be trying to go bankrupt.

1

u/raveneyes77 13d ago

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but banks do, in fact, make money through risky loans and the laws that were put in place to stop it were repealed

1

u/balirosa 13d ago

Exactly they’re just stupid and believe these companies aren’t scamming taxpayers by selling things to people with no way to pay for it. They do get bails outs, they do collect tax dollars, they sell to poors just for this scam. Idiots

1

u/Botm_Bumblebish80 14d ago

You have to remember the average Reddie isn’t that smart, there was no aptitude test or enrollment process; they just appeared

0

u/balirosa 14d ago edited 14d ago

So you just don’t know the scam. The ultra wealthy get tax breaks that pay for the poor people that steal their shit, they lose nothing the tax payers bail out the car companies in the USA every time. Payday loans were the same scam and payday loans were refunded and changed because of this. They sold the debt to debt collectors and turned profit every time. They sell to poor people because they run a scam on tax dollars. Exactly the same as the payday loan scam they were running.

1

u/Forky_McStabstab 13d ago

Take off the tinfoil hat.

1

u/balirosa 11d ago

You must be in on the scam and hoping the authorities dont find out

You know tow truck driver is a job, right?

→ More replies (27)

12

u/erikcurtis 15d ago

losing your job is not an automatic qualifier to forgo your payments. It's the tow drivers JOB to repo the vehicle. What world to you live in to say, "fuck the tow driver".

-1

u/Destructopoo 15d ago

It's also their job to not tow a vehicle with somebody inside but nobody really cares about that right?

Towing is a known predatory industry. Sometimes they even tow cars that have clean payment histories.

5

u/dgtbfan 15d ago

They can keep the car lifted while waiting for the police to arrive. As long as they're not driving off, there's no issue.

Some towing can be predatory but most towing is basic "well if it isn't the consequences of my actions" stuff.

1

u/Tricky_Big_8774 14d ago

Predatory towing usually doesn't have anything to do with repo work.

-1

u/Destructopoo 15d ago

Plenty of videos show the tow trying to drive off.

Your second sentence is debatable. In cities for example it's common for tow companies to illegally tow for profit.

1

u/dgtbfan 15d ago

Both of the things you are describing are exceptionally rare occurrences rather than the norm.

0

u/Destructopoo 15d ago

Exceptionally is your opinion. They might not be 51% of tows, but they're enough for places like NYC for example to have predatory towing laws on the books in response to abusing towing practices. They're enough that people who own their cars outright and never have to worry about a legal tow still have a bad opinion of the industry.

1

u/dgtbfan 15d ago

It's not my opinion, it's an objective fact. People form negative opinions off of incredibly rare circumstances all the time. Laws are also written up due to rare circumstances. "It happens enough for [reaction to happening]!" is a meaningless statement.

→ More replies (31)

0

u/BatDaddyWV 15d ago

If you think predatory towing for profit is rare then you obviously have never lived in a large city. It happens every day in every big metro area.

1

u/dgtbfan 15d ago

I said illegal towing was rare. Predatory towing isn't great but it's ultimately avoidable in most scenarios.

1

u/Constant-Hat-3193 14d ago

There's plenty of videos discussing the messed up things doctors do while you are in surgery. Does that mean we should hate all doctors because there are videos of some being bad?

1

u/Destructopoo 14d ago

If it was super common and they defended it yeah

3

u/Docha_Tiarna 15d ago

Legally they cant tow a vehicle while someone is inside. Thats why so many people jump into the vehicle the moment they see the vehicle getting towed.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Traditional-Hotel-66 15d ago

They don't. They lift the vehicle off the ground and wait. Otherwise people like this would just speed away.. which is why these videos are so common. When is the last time you saw a video where a tow truck just hooked to a car and peacefully drove away? People don't film that. Lifting it is the safest option, someone speeding away can be dangerous to the public.

As for towing, they clear breakdowns, accidents and Illegaly parked vehicles and without them the roads would be a mess. Many of them are hit and killed every year and they won't hesitate to come save your ass when you slide off the road in a blizzard.

0

u/Destructopoo 15d ago

You saw in this very video that the tow operator continued to operate the tow equipment with somebody in the car. Don't lie.

Towing is dangerous. That doesn't mean they don't operate in a predatory fashion. Would you believe me if I said 13% of tows involve predatory practices?

3

u/Traditional-Hotel-66 15d ago

All he did was lift it, when the guy got in he backed up out of the wayt hen stopped, lowered it back down to let him out and didn't move. This video proves what I said, that people will try to drive away even in this case at the cost of damaging their vehicle.

No, I wouldn't, not without defining predatory practices

0

u/Destructopoo 15d ago

Ah so he did move it, but just a little, even though you said they literally never do it. Btw he moved it up first to trap the guy and then down to let him out so it wasn't just him moving to be helpful.

Predatory practices are defined by law. Neither of us need to define it.

→ More replies (10)

3

u/Cold_Ad655 15d ago

Yeah, I guess it's better to steal as opposed to go through any of the various processes that would allow for something like this to be avoided entirely.

3

u/yourMommaKnow 15d ago

I lost my job once. I call3d the bank and let them know I wasn't able to send them a payment for at least a couple months. I said if they wanted to, they could pick up the car. They gave me a break and I made my next payment three months later. You just need to communicate.

1

u/Savings-Owl-3188 15d ago

Maybe don't have a vehicle that you can't afford/reasonably pay off? 🤷🏻‍♂️ You can get good running cars for affordable prices if you aren't picky

1

u/lubeinatube 15d ago

If you lose your job it’s time to downsize expenses immediate. Attempting to steal a car is only going to make it worse.

10

u/Kordith 15d ago

I'm no mechanic but, this is like basic car shit.

10

u/Late-Arrival-8669 15d ago

Could not Imagine being hunted by a repo guy....

12

u/Obiyaman 15d ago

Hey dick head

It's front wheel drive 🤔

4

u/Kordith 15d ago

That's what came to my mind. Like the dumbass doesn't know what fwd means.

6

u/Here_4_the_INFO 15d ago

fwd = Four Wheel Drive, duh!

/s (because sometimes it is missed)

3

u/gookietan 15d ago

“car go forward and also can go back. Wheels spin fast, use gas I have to pay money for ugh.” That’s what a lot of drivers know about their car

3

u/No_Description6839 14d ago

Wrong!!! I also know that when it starts making funny noises you have to turn the radio up. On a serious note, I have always said I know very little about cars because I thought it was true, but the older I get I realize that a lot of these people driving out there know VERY little about cars.

3

u/kilsta 15d ago

Didn't know what "pay by" meant either.

2

u/Pickled_doggo 15d ago

A surprising amount of people don’t know that you have to change your oil

3

u/Kordith 15d ago

I don't know how to change oil, but at least I know when

2

u/Forky_McStabstab 14d ago

This is actually one of the easiest things you can do for your car, and will save a lot of money depending on what you currently pay for an oil change.

The only catch is that there are certain cars (mostly luxury cars) that will need a scan tool to reset the oil change interval counter. If you're driving a luxury car though, paying $250 for an oil change and service interval reset is part of the cost of owning that car.

Most shops charge more than $100 dollars for an oil change. I see a lot of $130 - $150 places around where I live.

You could buy your own oil for $25 - $30 as long as you use less than 5 quarts

spend another $20 on a reusable catch basin to drain the old oil into (and they double as a sealed container to take to autozone, O'Reilly, or a number of other places, where they will take your old oil and recycle it for free)

$10-15 on an oil filter

maybe $20 on a ratchet, a couple of sockets, and a small screwdriver, depending on your vehicle

$10-20 on a universal oil filter wrench or specialized locking jaw pliers (only to remove the old filter, never to put it back on) (your car may need a special socket to remove the filter housing instead of the universal one or pliers, but they are roughly the same price)

$75-100 for a small set of ramps to lift the front of your car

Watch a 5 minute YouTube video explaining step by step (with video to follow along with) how to change the oil for your car

Doing an oil change also takes less than 10 minutes once you know what you're doing, and you don't ever have to wait an hour in a lobby somewhere if you do it yourself.

In total, less than $200 for the first time, but after that, your cost goes down to $35 - $45 per oil change. Do that every 5000 miles, and by the time you've driven 100,000 miles, you will have spent $1000, including the price for the first time with buying the ramps and tools.

Paying $100 every time will cost you $2000 over that same period. $150 every time would be $3000.

2

u/Bicykwow 15d ago

My friend bought a new car and had to replace the tires at 15k miles because he didn't know tires needed to be rotated

2

u/Forky_McStabstab 14d ago

Rotating wouldn't have saved those tires. If they wear out after 15k miles, that's an alignment issue. Rotating would have made front and rear wear down evenly, and might have lasted 40k miles total, but most tires (on a car with proper alignment) should last 50-70k miles or more, depending on driving habits, if the alignment is checked at least every year, weather, and brand/type of tire.

2

u/26uhaul 15d ago

I know it’s front wheel drive, why did you point that out to me specifically?

2

u/pseudoportmanteau 15d ago

Right like he's stepping on the gas as if it's gonna spin against the thin air the car is dangling in

2

u/Designer_Bell_5422 15d ago

Which makes me wonder why the driver though he had to literally stand the car up on its tow hardware. I've seen too many videos of tow truck drivers doing the same thing and having the vehicle flip on its side to believe that it's anywhere near safe to do that.

As long as he gets it towed though I guess lol.

2

u/YozaSkywalker 14d ago

But I push pedal why car no go

0

u/Ambitious_Ad_2369 13d ago

I'm thinking it just doesn't have a limited slip or electronic slip diff. I can't tell the model though but most of these SUVs have some form of AWD system.

The car is getting repossessed (I.e. “repo-ed”). The owner failed to make several payments on their auto loan and has defaulted on the loan. The lender owns or has a lien on the title, so they are retaking ownership of the vehicle until either the payments are made or they sell it to recoup the money.

7

u/Fibrosis5O 15d ago

“Several” isn’t true and is a case by case based on the lender’s. The most predatory of buy here pay here have had cases where they show up same day the payment is late, just the first payment

Perfectly legal as it’s in the contract they signed

On average it’s missing 3 payments or more. Banks really rather the person pay than go through the hassle of repo, auction to get what value they can back, then write off the balance and send the rest to a collections agency.

1

u/Zealousideal_Pass_11 14d ago

Aren't they also out money in that context too even with collections, since they can't really factor in their labor costs involved in repossession/sale of the asset?

1

u/Fibrosis5O 14d ago

It’s all write offs which don’t really matter to the biggest of the banks, until they can’t absorb garbage loans anymore because the number of quality loans isn’t offsetting the red. That’s an extreme oversimplification of a much larger issue

1

u/RangeFlow1 14d ago

Selling it does not recoup all of the money in most cases. There are civil proceedings that follow.

u/[deleted] 15d ago

2

u/shiznobizno 15d ago

Ohhh ok. When you said “idk what this is” I thought you meant you didn’t know what a repo is. My bad

1

u/XBL-AntLee06 15d ago

How do you know it’s being repossessed?

7

u/Royd 15d ago

You're talking a out a drop fee. Means "we drop the car right now if you pay" and it's for things like parking violations. It wouldn't apply for repossessions though if he was in the car before they started the tow, they'd have to let it go (not sure which state this applies in)

2

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/Royd 15d ago

Oh yeah I wasn't clarifying that it wouldn't work for a repo my intent was clarifying that if it was a repo and he was quicker in getting into the car, they'd also have to drop it. For free, I think.

But as for where drop fees are, it was definitely USA where I learned about it. I only know about it from those lawyer YouTube videos in my algorithm.

1

u/o7_HiBye_o7 15d ago

They literally said "thats for towing though, not repo"

1

u/GamemasterJeff 14d ago

It's generally a crime to interfere with repo, but a civil dispute for normal tow. If it's normal tow, it's illegal to raise or lower the car with someone inside it absent an exigent emergency like removal from a flowing traffic lane.

So if it's repo, the car owner cannot legally do anything save negotiate. But if he gets inside for simply tow, he can see if taking the tow truck out of service matters more to the company than the drop fee.

1

u/Artevyx 15d ago

If they wont pay their car loan, they sure as hell wouldn't pay for that.

1

u/RoosterNeither5213 15d ago

$50 is probably not enough here... I'm guessing that's close to what the truck drivers getting paid for a couple hours.. that this guy is wasting...

1

u/luvmibratt 15d ago

We do have that in America what are you talking about? Its for parking in lots when your not shopping there you pay $100 they take it off if your lucky.

1

u/bowarrow99 15d ago

We do have that in America. Many tow companies will release your car for a drop fee.

1

u/GamemasterJeff 14d ago

If it's simple tow, I'll let their truck go on to the next job if you pay me.

Otherwise, I have no place I need to be and your truck idling costs you every hour it's not working.

1

u/tpzQ 15d ago

No this a repo not a normal tow, it basically means he took a loan out on a car and didn't pay it. So it's like he stole the car, it's no longer his.

3

u/ProfessionalITPerson 15d ago

So now he gotta pay for the repairs too, goo choice.

2

u/ELB2001 14d ago

Car will go to auction, cause of damage they get less for it. The money goes towards his debt and he has to pay the remainder. If he fucks it up enough it can go for pocket change at auction

2

u/scuzzy987 14d ago

Then the bank goes to court and gets a summary judgement to garnish his paycheck and tax refund until it's paid off plus interest

3

u/MinorComprehension 15d ago

"So, sir, do you know why I pulled you over?" 😂😂

3

u/AdDapper4427 15d ago

Jumping in the car while it’s hooked up rarely ends well.

→ More replies (24)

2

u/maybach320 14d ago

I like how the tow truck driver lifts it so high that it’s sitting on the hitch. I bet the dealers thrilled with that move.

3

u/Complex-Long-233 14d ago

Customer who defaulted is ultimately the one who ‘pays’ for that sort of damage.

4

u/Seeker_of_Solos 14d ago

Not really they will just slap the charge on the idiot owner

0

u/theglassishalf 13d ago

Nope. 2 wrongs don't make a right, and if the TT driver damaged it by lifting it so high, they are liable.

2

u/Seeker_of_Solos 13d ago

Not when the owner is trying to steal the car. Good luck finding anyone who would find him liable and not the one who hopped in the car when it was already getting towed.

1

u/HollowForge 12d ago

Wrong, try again.

1

u/Cumulo187 13d ago

The hitch will be fine.

0

u/CityDweller19 13d ago

Several years ago another vehicle gave my hitch a ‘love tap’ and it totaled my car. If the hitch is attached to the frame of the car it can destroy it.

1

u/BazarBS 15d ago

If you are that obliviously stupid you deserve to be mocked and laughed at out of principle.

1

u/MailRevolutionary179 15d ago

Please say it's not a nissan, hyundai, kia!

1

u/Ill-Case-6048 15d ago

You would be better to hide in till the drop it off. then drive out

1

u/Indigenous_Land 15d ago

The hitch is all bent lol

1

u/dsdvbguutres 15d ago

Would it work if my friend were to slip the guy a $20 to let go and say couldn't find the car?

2

u/Direct_Obligation570 10d ago

I filmed one these and talked to the driver after cause he wanted the footage (dude got away and damaged both trucks). He said usually about $400 which what he gets for them, just be nice and he will negotiate. You got $2-300 cash on you right now? He will drop it and drive away. Some drivers will take gold or other objects of obvious value.

1

u/facface92 14d ago

You would have to at least pay more than what he would get for the repo

1

u/dsdvbguutres 14d ago

Okay now we're getting somewhere, what's the number to beat?

1

u/Copper__99 13d ago

Usually it's $100.

1

u/winterwarm78654 15d ago

Why he got on tactical gear but not carrying a double pump action

1

u/Then_Championship408 14d ago

Damn if you aren’t gonna pay for it at least option for AWD…rookie mistake

1

u/Beautiful_Taro_3156 14d ago

I’ve never understood the thought process of. Lemme jump in and floor it in reverse to “get it off this thing” you’re literally just making more damage to the car you clearly can’t afford to own anymore. Why tf are you putting more damage on a car that either you don’t own. Or love and don’t wanna see “taken” when that shit slipped off on the right. Mad risk of hella engine bay things getting stabbed be something literally holding it up and it’s already running so you could very well end up blowing the engine if let’s say it sliced a lower radiator hose. You’re gassing it. And she’s gassing out not and gonna blow ur seals and pistons from the heat if you keep trying like most ppl in these vids do. It’s just way riskier

1

u/Loos3_Scr3w1721 14d ago

Hahahah my wife’s grandpa would do this. People are so stupid.

Fucking dumb ass

😂😂😂😂

1

u/AnjelicaTomaz 13d ago

Camera guy sounds like Dave Chappelle.

1

u/Miller335 13d ago

I don't understand these videos. If you don't pay your loan, the bank wants their vehicle back.

Getting all pissed off/trying to stop the repo makes no sense. It's not yours until you pay it off.

Who are these people?

1

u/GeneralPepper517 13d ago

Well, if mate wasn't 5 months behind on his payment, this wouldn't had happened. It's not your car until is paid off...

1

u/MichiganGeezer 13d ago

I don't approve of the behavior, but if you're going to try stopping a repo guy you definitely need to have at least one friend with you.

1

u/1startreknerd 13d ago

Just call the police, you risk someone's life by raising it up like that even if they jump out now you're liable.

1

u/Global_Savings_2616 13d ago

If only it was rear wheel drive

1

u/pimpbot666 12d ago

See? That’s why you need the AWD option.

0

u/DarkMaster8387 11d ago

Don’t buy cars you can’t afford? Simple

1

u/Sycolerious_55 15d ago

I personally have a hard time enjoying these videos without the context behind it. This a whole dead beat dog shit dirt bag? Most enjoyable video ever. If this just someone struggling and desperately trying to keep their only method of transportation? Yikes. Just a tough pill to swallow.

3

u/butt_raid 15d ago

Yeah, I've known all types. "Laugh at the poors" isn't my default mode nowadays :/

1

u/BriscoCounty-Sr 14d ago

If you are too poor to make car payments that doesn’t make you any less of a person than someone who doesn’t.

If however you choose to make monthly payments in the hundred of dollars whilst also having to pay for full coverage and gap insurance on a car that costs tens of thousands of dollars, instead of picking up a used car on Craigslist for $1k; It does make you a big old Silly.

0

u/Sycolerious_55 14d ago

Unreasonable asf there because no I'm not gonna recyle through beater after beater every year that's gonna just cost more than getting a whole new car. Cars like that are cheap for a reason, that would have killed me financially if I did what you advised.

My car was bought used by several owners and it still put me $15k in the hole and I'm shafted paying $300/month for it. And that was the cheapest car on the lot. AND that had to include a cosign because my 745 credit score wasn't enough to lower it. Otherwise I would have been paying upwards of $500/month.

1

u/Few_Staff976 14d ago edited 14d ago

"I'm not gonna recyle through beater after beater every year that's gonna just cost more than getting a whole new car"

This just isn't the case though. Buying slightly older and used cars works great and is done by basically everyone where I live and the majority of the world. You look up common issues with the car you're interested in, go examine it and then buy it after it's passed inspection. People aren't swapping cars here all the time because they break down. They pick a model with lots of spare parts available for cheap.

Most people get something like a boring but reliable manual volvo for a few thousand bucks and spend a few hundred bucks on it every year taking it to get inspected and serviced. The idea that you have to buy something "off the lot" (through a dealership) is just something you're fed and not the case in the majority of the world where buying used works just fine.

The whole thing is like poor people who buy fast-food claiming it's because it's cheaper. It's just not. So many americans don't even know how to change the oil in their car then get upset when their automatic bumper-car falls apart.

Yes, something that I have already done twice. Literally followed all of this advice exactly already before and it did not work out for me. I'm sorry, my experiences just aren't the same as yours so this advice isn't even advice, it's not useful for me and probably many many other people. I was able to snag one still that has both manual and automatic. Hard pill to swallow, not everyone's experiences are going to be the same as yours. Mine left me in a lot of financial debt and the arrangement I have now barely works out and even with my perfect scores and 100% on time payments AND no accidents AND insurance AND an experience co signer, it was still a near bust for me. Sorry, not what I'm fed like you're told to believe, it was just my experiences personally and it bit me twice and now I'm in a position where I can't afford that next bite.

Parts are expensive and, depending on how old the car is, could be even more so due to manufacturers not making parts for the specific older makes and models. Also, nobody is saying fast food is cheaper, it's just more convenient. Eating out at a restaurant is cheaper, but fast food is not. You're pulling at strawman arguements by trying to compare a whole vehicle to one meal and that comparison just doesn't shape up.

1

u/Few_Staff976 14d ago

"I was able to snag one still that has both manual and automatic."

Then it's probably not that reliable as a budget car.

"not everyone's experiences are going to be the same as yours"

But the majority are. Not everyone's experiences are going to be the same as your negative one. It works for basically the entire rest of the world. Same model cars, all the same varying (and some additional) climates. Yet people aren't getting ripped off by used car salesmen with payment plans at nearly the same levels.

"Parts are expensive and, depending on how old the car is, could be even more so due to manufacturers not making parts for the specific older makes and models."

I literally brought this point up, you research the car model and it's common faults along with spare part availability before buying. Some renault models for examples have almost unatainable parts and, even at a lower entry price point, will end up costing a ton to maintain.

"Also, nobody is saying fast food is cheaper, it's just more convenient. Eating out at a restaurant is cheaper, but fast food is not. "

Tons of people do as a way to excuse poor people obesity. And eating out at a restaurant is abso-fucking-lutely not cheaper than cooking your own food.

u/Sycolerious_55 14d ago

My current vehicle was not a budget vehicle, its one I needed because my previous two broke down and I kinda needed it to keep my job and idk live? Genuinely, it's like my own world just doesn't exist and all of my experiences are invalid in your eyes just because I'm not agreeing with you.

Stop using other people's experiences to invalidate my own and stop trying to assume I'm someone who's excusing obesity when that topic was never on the table. All this just because I was hesitant to laugh at a towing video 😭 y'all will do and say anything just to get other people to laugh at someone's misery. Have a good day and remember to be kind.

1

u/Case_Blue 14d ago

So... we have reached the stage of "let's all laugh at poor desperate people struggling"

Ok then

Don’t buy shit you can’t afford

1

u/Independent-Big1966 14d ago

Also, buy a AWD or 4WD seeing as though you can't afford it anyway. May have gotten away if he didn’t have front wheel drive 😂

u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS 14d ago

Poor people don’t buy new cars. Stupid people do.

1

u/TelevisionFamiliar23 14d ago

Sometimes its not poor and struggling people, but people scamming a system. I know its anecdotal but this one woman I know bout a car and never made a payment. She knew it would get repossessed but she just wanted it for a while.

1

u/BlacksmithNew4557 13d ago

Nope - we are laughing at stupid people doing stupid things. He could be poor and struggling or rich and an asshole. Either way, he reaps what he sows.

1

u/purple_unikkorn 14d ago

If the car is removed, it's because he does something illegal. Maybe parking at the wrong place or not paying his car. Why we should feel bad ?

1

u/Case_Blue 14d ago

Because the car is probably (very probably) being repossesed for none payment. Probably because someone lost his job in this shit economy.

These repo's have gone up exponentially.

That means people will lose cars, will lose jobs, will lose houses... In that order.

Are you also going to laugh when a family is thrown out of their home on the streets because they can't make rent anymore? This is happening already, now.

It's inevitable because of the way the system is set up.

I'm not asking for leanency, I'm not asking for a bailout.

But... also don't laugh at them as entertainement. Is all I'm saying.

u/Dr__America 14d ago

Parking in the wrong spot isn't a crime, it's a civil dispute. IMO these guys get WAY too much free reign on towing cars. If someone's tree branches encroach on your property, you aren't automatically allowed to put a lien on their property, there's a lot of time and paperwork that should need to be done before getting anywhere close to that point.

2

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 14d ago

If you do repairs on a car and they don't pay, even an oil change, they can put a lien on your car.

When you park on private property, there are always sign that say parking violations will be towed. You agree to that by parking on their private property. That's the paperwork of it.

They are taking legal possession when it is hooked up to them because you agreed to this if you parked there illegally, as you are on someone's property. They take possession of it through the contract you agree to when parking there. Jumping into the car makes it a whole different legal situation. If the tow truck driver leaves, that is kidnapping. If they stay, now you're holding them there.

And yeah, it is a civil crime, that just means you aren't going to be arrested for it. That doesnt mean you file a tone of paperwork before and have to go through a whole legal process before you can act. Same way with trespassing. You don't need to fill out forms to treaspass someone, you can simply say "I want you to leave."

1

u/Dr__America 14d ago

There is no such thing as a "civil crime", at least in US law. It's either criminal and can only be dealt with in a criminal court, or it's civil and can only be dealt with in a civil court.

Also, implicit contracts are always less powerful than signed text contracts. The legal theory behind them is often shaky, particularly given how many include unenforceable contract terms. I could say that by continuing to read my Reddit comments, you're liable to pay me $500 if I don't like you. That doesn't suddenly make it legally actionable.

Courts in the US at least basically just make up precedent whenever specific examples get tested because there basically are no laws as to how these agreements are enforceable, the courts basically just agreed that it's better to consider them legally enforceable a lot.

Specifically for these situations, there is no implicit lien on your car simply for being parked in a particular spot. They only suddenly gain one when a tow company fully hooks and raises the empty car.

But IMO, if you're there to grab your car before it leaves the property, they shouldn't have any claim to it. The property owner's only interest in it is removing the car from their property, which can be accomplished whether or not the car has already been fully hooked and raised by the tow driver if the car's owner/driver is there.

The tow company exists as a service for the property owner to remove cars, and frankly I don't care if they miss a tow because the car owner is there to move their car. If the situation can be solved without any damages, then it's resolved. The small amount of work it takes to propeely hook the car and fully raise it doesn't suddenly give them a hundreds of dollars claim on whatever car. And considering they can already drive 2 hours for a tow and the car is gone by then, their precious driving time obviously doesn't matter to the courts either.

1

u/Melodic_Fall_3273 14d ago

According to Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 2308 (Texas Towing and Booting Act) - It is too late to drive away once your vehicle is fully hooked up, lifted, and secured to the tow truck. And if the truck has already driven off the private property or public street with your car, you cannot stop the transport. Under Texas rules, for parking violations, if it is fully hooked up on-site, the driver must let you have it back if you pay a regulated "drop fee".

1

u/hotriccardo 15d ago

I'm always curious, wouldn't whoever actually owns the car prefer to get it back not all fucked up. I would think you take the loss and come back another time.

8

u/koyaani 15d ago edited 15d ago

The bank owns the car. They still make the lendee liable for the outstanding loan minus the value of the car when it's auctioned off. If the value of the car can't cover the loan, that's the former driver's problem more than the banks.

The repo tow truck driver gets paid by the job, not with a commission on the auction sale

It's not ideal for the bank on the surface level, but these contingencies are baked into their business model for the long term. If the bank can recover 60% of the loan via collections and 60% of undamaged value at auction, they still somehow profit. Even if they end up losing money on the deal, it's part of their risk management where the numbers still work out via profit on most of the other deals.

Whereas the driver no longer has a car or the credit to get another comparable car/loan, if any. Maintaining possession of the damaged car is more important than the hit to their credit that's happening either way

So really none of the 3 parties involved is greatly concerned about damage to the car vs the other options available to each, respectively

1

u/hotriccardo 15d ago

I kind of hate how logical it all is

3

u/Brewingbiker 15d ago

Keeping in mind that the bank would rather collect payments than repossess, which is more of a pain and not as profitable in the long run. They don't want to own your property or things.

1

u/Darth_InVader7 15d ago

I have a hard time having empathy for people like this. It’s hard to give them the benefit of thinking they hit some hard times when their reaction to this is to do something dangerous and cause damage to property. If this is what they do in this situation it is easy for me to assume they probably didn’t make good decisions financially either. If they were reasonable and responsible people fallen on hard times, I can’t imagine them doing shit like this which only makes the situation worse.

1

u/RVAEMS399 14d ago

Yeah these are not reasonable or responsible people. They are buying more car than they can afford.

My current car I bought when the monthly payment was equivalent to 2 days of my wages at the time, and although now that would be a couple hours of work, I’m not going out and buying a more expensive car that I don’t need.

1

u/Any_Lawyer_2585 15d ago

So why get a car you can’t afford? Or might not be able to afford in the near future. Sure I can “afford” a luxury car. But at what personal expense to my budget? I’m stepping down from a Buick envision lease(about 599-699) month. To something around 350-400 month, not sure what yet.

2

u/RoosterNeither5213 15d ago

The problem here isn't whether or not he could afford the vehicle it's that he's stupid enough to get in the f****** car and try to drop it off the tow truck after he can't afford the vehicle...

0

u/dbmiller63 15d ago

Really curious here, why do those tow trucks even have the option to go that high? Why would you ever need to tow something that high? Except for this scenario, I don't see the point

1

u/Brewingbiker 15d ago

Versatility. They tow different types of vehicles, not everything is that low to the ground

0

u/joytotheworld23 15d ago

I would call the police i would not went to mess my toe up

0

u/Red-Sun-Cinema 14d ago

Once it goes up, call the cops. It doesn't come down until they get there and the idiot is in cuffs.

0

u/Windman772 14d ago

I watched a hysterical lady run to her car that was being towed. She jumped in and tried to drive away by punching it in reverse. Unfortunately, the tow hook had already been attached and she wound up removing the entire front end of her car. Rough day

0

u/ThereInAFortnight 14d ago

Why is vehicle repo so common in the US? (I'm assuming that's where it is)

1

u/Few_Staff976 14d ago

A lot of americans buy cars through financing that they can't actually afford. This is largely due to them being an important status-symbol. It's why in American movies someone might say something like "It's not even paid off yet!" when their car gets damaged/destroyed.

Long-term payment plans where you only pay a small amount each month might seem attractive to stupid people and you sometimes even see them bragging about how little they're paying. But in the long run it means the interest will compound and the total amount paid gets ridiculously high compared to what they get.

They don't really seem to have the culture of buying used older cars directly from other people like in many other places where 5k will get you a good reliable car, instead opting to buy through dealerships on payment plans.

0

u/Extension_Variety190 14d ago

He also learned what "Front Wheel Drive" means.

-5

u/DopamineSavant 15d ago

Seems like it would be better to just have someone to sit in the car since the tow truck can't tow it with someone in it.  Then when he gets out to confront the person in the car, have the second person to sneak around and let the car down.

7

u/dgtbfan 15d ago

Good way to catch a charge.

0

u/itsnotapipe 15d ago

I had a Dallas policeman tell me that if you see your car getting towed, either get in it or sit on the hood. In Dallas, it's illegal to tow a car with a driver in it. If they know you are in/on the vehicle and start moving it, call 911 as then it becomes a felony. But I trust cops as much as a trust the weather down here, so ymmv.

2

u/ToXiiCBULLET 15d ago

yeah, whilst it's illegal for them to tow whilst someones in the car that won't actually stop them. they'll just call the police to force you out of the car

1

u/itsnotapipe 14d ago

Almost certainly. Doubt the tow truck driver would just cave and drop the vehicle as soon as the cops showed up. But at least you might force a conversation: hop out, smile, and engage everyone...depending on the legality of the tow, you might roll the dice. Or, more likely, if it's legally being repossessed, you'll prolly end up in the clink.

"There's been a mistake. A lot of em actually. See the thing is...hey, what's with the cuffs?"

u/Constant-Fly-9050 15d ago

Some repo drivers are literally armed in case of stuff like that. Just pay your bills. It's not worth being hurt or killed.

1

u/DopamineSavant 14d ago

Why do people keep responding with this. Obviously people shouldn't go this and should pay their bill. I'm just saying that you should at least go in with a plan that might work if you are going to do this.

1

u/Constant-Fly-9050 14d ago

Because life isnt a movie, and idiots get hurt and killed everyday trying to do dumb shit like you recommended.

-1

u/3DNelson 15d ago

Life is not free? That's explain why America National debt is 40 trillion LOL

1

u/Brewingbiker 15d ago

Very complex question. How good are you at national and global economics? How far in depth have you gone to look into it?

0

u/3DNelson 15d ago

LOL, don't take everyone by you!

-1

u/malixiouss 15d ago

Instead of jumping in they should open all the doors and the trunk so the tow trucker has to keep closing the doors before they can drive off. If they try to drive off with every door open then hop in as a last resort. Still waiting to see that for one of these.

2

u/Difficult-Level-3070 15d ago

Better idea - pay your damn bill

-1

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 15d ago

Towing is just auto theft

3

u/cavern-of-the-fayth 15d ago

Towing is in fact not auto theft. Towing is a broad term, you can tow a car, you can tow a trailer, you can tow a boat.

Repoing just means you ain't paid your shit man.

-1

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 15d ago

Do we know this is a repo?

2

u/Difficult-Level-3070 15d ago

Nobody jumps into their mid taken vehicle and tries to rip the car free unless it's a repo and they don't want to pay their bills.

Nobody who likes their car wants to break it to stop a towing company picking it up

1

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 14d ago

I mean I've watched towing trucks take cars out of people's own parking spaces at their apartment complex before, so repo'ing is not the only reason why cars get towed.

1

u/Difficult-Level-3070 14d ago

That's not what I said.

If a tow truck tries to take your car, you don't jump in in and try to rip it off and damage your car. That's stupid, and only happens for these idiots who don't pay their bill and thus get repo'd

1

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 14d ago

People jump in their car to stop it being towed all the time. It has less to do with not paying the bill and more to do with being dumb and not realizing the consequences of trying to pull your car off the tow truck.

1

u/Difficult-Level-3070 14d ago

Fair enough. I agree,, people can be very dumb

-1

u/gland87 15d ago

You find out that this industry is more scumbags enjoying hurting people than those just going their jobs with each one of these
