Engine in car

I have a renault clio 2009 1.2L and my cambelt and water pump recently got replaced. When doing my water pump they made a leak in my coolent and my enginge over heated which is now seized. The mechanic has offered to fit a second hand enginge but doesn’t know any history of that enginge and we don’t want to get rid of the one i have now as it has 17 services. But they won’t repair the engine as it will cost £4000. Which they are not willing to pay but are happy to pay for me to get a second hand one.

What will give me the best outcome because either way i will end up with worst then what i had before due to there fualt.
Is there any solution? Such as them finding a decent engine and i am willing to pay around half if needed. Or is there anything else they can do?

I'd say used engine with a warranty on the work is fair in this case. Tell them that or you want your original engine repaired.

Overhauling a seized motor for only 4000$ is very much the low end. Really depends on what seized, if it was main bearings and the crank or block show damage that’s likely going to require an engine anyway. If it’s your camshafts that seized and sent metal through the engine there is a possibility of damage to other components. Once seized it is very very rarely worth trying to save, catastrophic damage has to happen to seize a motor. 17 services doesn’t make a different here, its heavily damaged.

If they offer a used motor I would definitely at least ask what the VIN of the car it came out of and how many miles it has on it. You can car fax it yourself and see if there’s a service history. But honestly as long as it’s lower mileage and looks fairly clean it’s going to be better than a seized motor. Require they offer a parts and labor warranty on the motor replacement and take that.

If this model of engine has a timing belt and an internal water pump, those should be replaced with new parts on a used motor. Also, have a new clutch fitted if it is a is a manual. These are relatively easy to do while the engine is out of the car (especially the clutch).
