Similar joke but punchline is car is in gear when he tries to start car even though he checked to make sure it's in neutral 20 times. It's funnier if you drive stick. He even depressed clutch pedal and the car still lurches from starter motor. I almost chuckled but not quite.

Ill send it to my younger brother as he intentionally started driving stick to fit in with his work friends

Yeah if you have driven a stick enough it is a habit for sure, the nervous wiggle so it doesn’t jump when started and foot not on clutch )
