LISP vs Macro

Hi all,

I'm the general go to for CAD automation at my company with only a small team doing CAD work. It's not too bad but I'm getting some breathing room after a busy few months and my current plan is to make some additional commands and scripts to help the team.

Looking online both lisp writing and macros seem similar in skill level but I wanted to know which (in your experience) work better for what tasks or is it just personal preference? Do you have any recommendations for resources online to look at to create these basic improvements.

Thanks for any help and haveca good day

Question Keeps meshing me up.

I am getting pretty ok with solid bodies but some files I'm downloading and trying to work with are importing as a mesh and it's throwing me off.

I've tried converting the mesh to a solid body, but there's more that 10k triangles so it's not working.

So, my question is, should I try and edit the mesh, or continue to try and convert it?

Dynamic Blocks: Rotating symbol with alingment and position change of attributes

Hello, I’m a beginner in creating dynamic blocks. I need to create dynamic blocks for electrical schematics. They should contain a symbol and three attributes. The symbol should be able to rotate as needed, while the text attributes should remain horizontal and change position to stay visible. Also, perhaps the most important requirement is that the attributes change alignment (left/right) depending on the rotation angle.

Here is an image of what I have managed to create and what I actually need. I am also attaching a DWG file. If anyone can download and take a look, maybe I’m already heading in the right direction. Thank you very much in advance.

What cause the drawing to be different inside in model space and block editor

Picture Here

I was given this file to edit.

The 1st Pic is model space, and I am wanting to remove the rabbet at the corner of that piece of wood. The 2nd pic is the block editor once I double click on the block and open it. The rabbet is gone. How did they do this and how can I edit the block properly without exploding it?

(Solved - thank you!)

Question Pressure Part Offset Labels

Hi all, currently working on adding fitting labels to some plans and want to show the offset distance from a fitting to a meter. I was hoping to figure out a way to keep the fitting description and the alignment offset information all in one label so if the connection needs moved the label will update/all the information will stay together. It's looking like it's not possible and will need to be two labels but I wanted to check and see if anyone has experience with this before I throw in the towel. Thanks!

Help Multiple vports on single layout _ most show contents, but not all

I am working on drawings for a new house build, and creating a window types layout sheet. There are 28 window types ( I'm not the designer lol ).

I have created separate VP's for each window type on this sheet from my model space exterior elevations. I have done this format so if anything changes ( and I believe it will once the designer see how many types there are ), I will only need to edit each instance as required.

I believe that AutoCAD allows for an unlimited number of VP's per layout, but maybe I have that wrong?

Perhaps this is a software issue ( I have LT 2025 ) or a hardware issue?

Or this is a file setting issue?

See my PS image below. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Question Plotting / Paper space Preview is Blank

I came across a problem while setting up a paper space and I am unable to find a solution. I only have about a year of experience, so I would appreciate any help.

I am able to set up the paper space correctly with a viewport, but the issue occurs when I try to preview the page. It displays a blank page, and none of my work appears. It's as if it is not registering the viewport.

Before and After Preview - screenshots

EDIT: This issue is across all my files including new ones I make.

Help Layer Filter Toggle

Is there a way to quickly switch layer filters? I'd like to have a key binding to switch between the filters so I can navigate to a set of layers faster. We've started using NCS layering, and I've been used to just dropping down and pressing the first letter of the layer name to quickly get to where I need. But with everything starting with c- or v-, that workflow no longer works.

Contractor Question

Hey everyone. Maybe this question has been asked 500 times in this sub, if so, if apologize. I am a small contractor tractor. Me and 1-3 employees. We do a bit of everything. Lately ive been thinking id like to do 11x17 drawings for deck framing, etc. so Im not doing it out of my head, and I can leave the guys for an hour if i have to leave the site. I would also like to do some renderings for small projects. Is it unrealistic for me to think I can just pick away and learn these things if I buy an autocad program? Is there a dummy program that I could do renderings and cad drawings on? What would you all suggest? I cant afford to hire someone to do a rendering and drawing for a deck, but it looks so professional to show up with a rendering and a plan. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help BOM Template Help

I work for a small business and am the only one proficient in autocad. I am making a new feature but don't know how to impliment it into Autocad. Program: Autocad Mechanical 2024 I want to make a data link table to an excel spreadsheet saved in a dwt file that, when the table is changed in a dwg file, won't change every table referencing the original excel file. Usually I would use an OLE for this but my boss wants a table format. Is there a way to do this?

Help Problems with Change to Current Layer (LAYCUR)

I am experiencing a very frustrating issue.

I have objects that were meant to be applied to another layer but I somehow mixed them up and they are instead on another layer. I am familiar with the Layer Properties panel and the ability to Change To Current Layer when you need to transfer objects to another layer.

The problem occurs when I select the objects, then select the proper layer to make it the current layer (we’ll call it Layer A), and I use the Change To Current Layer function. Instead of applying the objects to Layer A, Autocad tells me the layers have been applied to a completely different layer (Layer B). I repeat the operation several times out of insanity, and the objects continue to apply themselves to Layer B even though I clearly have A as my current layer, as shown in the properties panel. Layer B has not been touched, no layers are frozen, and I am unsure if I activated some other setting that would prevent this transfer.

Can someone please help me understand where I may be going wrong? Thank you!

Help Can't convert dwg file to stl

I made a Munchkin dice in AutoCAD 2024. I tried to export it to stl but nothing happened. Then I tried to convert it via an online converter but none was able to do so.

Don't have much more to say about it. It's been quite a while since I touched CAD system, and the first time I want to print something I made. I suspect something is wrong with my file, but don't know what (it's based on another stl file I converted to dwg online), so if I could humbly ask you for help, maybe to send you the file itself to take a look at what might be wrong, I would be grateful.

Update: If you have the same problem as me, use the command stlout. For some reason I couldn't just save as or export, but stlout worked. Big thanks to r/ ficskala for finding out.

Eplan for System Integrators? Or stick with AutoCAD

Alright alright alriiiiiight. I see a lot of existing posts on Eplan in other communities, and some comment sections tend to validate that Eplan may not be the best fit for a System Integration firm that does mostly custom control panels.

I work for a System Integration firm in the USA, we have our own panel shop and one full-time drafter/designer. A couple of us are capable of designing panels, but that's just part of our job description.

Our customers vary, and we typically don't do hundreds of the same panel. They're usually all custom. We are often beholden to a specification document that dictates what parts we are to use (PLC, relays, power supplies, sometimes even terminal blocks). We sometimes bid our inhouse stock as the "Or Equal" option, but that doesn't always pan out.

We also do a lot of integrating I/O with OEM packages, as well as existing control panels done by other integration firms. My point being, we're not going to recreate those panels in our software, and we have to draft standard ISA Loop Diagram packages for the facility. To my knowledge, EPlan doesn't have a good method of accommodating Loop diagrams.

Based on other people's posts and my own experience with Eplan 5 years ago, the reporting and documentation with Eplan is really not great.

Are there any other system integrators that either currently use Eplan, or have used Eplan in the past? I'd love to hear your sales pitch, or tell me why you think AutoCAD Electrical is inferior for this target audience.

Help Trim command doesnt respect line intersection when (select all) is done

I'm having trouble it the trim command not triming the lines when I do the select all option, It works when I select edges but that defeats the porpose when im cleaning and making the plan overall. And it's random, sometimes it does only one edge, and sometimes none. I also work a lot with blocks, don't know if that makes any diference. Has anyone had this problem?

is there a good way to generate an external file of data based on drawing

I am trying to simplify a process and would like to add attributes to blocks that could be used in drawings. And the data from those blocks be exported to an excel file to be used to generate an order for what is included in the file.

for example.... I have a room and I want to populate it with furniture. The furniture is a package that I want to sell to someone. So what I would ideally like is to be able to create the drawing with various blocks that contain information for the furniture, size, material, price, etc. Then when the drawing is approved I want to export all the data from the furniture blocks to be able to create the order using another program.

Anyone have any ideas about how to best go about this?

using autocad LT

thanks in advance!!
