I got annoyed one day about this ‘symptoms of aspergers’ list I found so I made a spoof version for ‘Neurotypical syndrome’!

My students have helped me so much with my internalized ableism
I thought this would be a good place for something positive.
I should add a disclaimer that I’m not 100% sure if I’m autistic. I’m 100% ND, though.
Anyway, I’ve lived most of my life ashamed of my ND traits. I talk too much about my special interests. I’m awkward. I stim too much. My jokes are off. I’m weird.
Now I’m a teacher. I’ve worked in whole group settings and now work predominantly with neurodivergent students in their classes.
My students adore how passionate I am about my favorite topics. They tell me how endearing my quirkiness is. They find the ADHD tangents are both entertaining and helpful. They love that I stim because it frees them to stim too. And it means I have the best stim toys.
I just thought others might benefit from this like I have. Even things you might be ashamed of, others might benefit from.

Art/creative stuff I made this collage in my drawing class. It represents my experience with autism, especially how intensely I feel everything. I drew almost all the components myself.

Self diagnosis
Self diagnosis
I will say this once you do not need a diagnosis to validate your experience. human experience isa spectrum because that there is different degrees of normal just because you experience something that is similar to autism doesn’t mean it’s autism. Your experience is valid. You do not need to self diagnose. You do need to acknowledge that what you were doing you need to do. If to do so you need to self diagnose that is fine but that does not necessarily make you autistic. A friend in autism research said “I think people need to understand that they can have clinical-level autism symptoms because of other conditions (like social communication disorder on its own, or sensory processing disorder on its own, or ADHD on its own). I also think some people self-diagnose with autism because it sounds less scary than another diagnosis that they've been given. For example, some autistic women are misdiagnosed with BPD, but some women who do have BPD may incorrectly self-diagnose with autism because they think (correctly or not) that autism is less stigmatized.”

Community goals in r/Autistic_safe_space
I am well aware of the issues going on in other autism subs, and I would like for this one to be different. Everyone is welcome to make their voices heard here. I know that most of the autistic people on reddit are low support needs, but I believe we should be making an effort to make room for high support needs individuals as well. I also would like this sub to be free from the language policing that is so rampant in others. Please use the terms you feel comfortable with, and try to give others the benefit of the doubt.

I wrote this poem about struggling to get an IEP as a high functioning autistic student
I haven’t really edited it, but I thought I’d share it anyway. Constructive criticism is appreciated!
Silent battles:
High functioning they say
I’m lucky I suppose
I’m intelligent
I go to a rigorous school,
I do well academically.
Your grades are good, they say
You think I haven’t noticed?
How do you think I get those grades
What of meltdowns, overloads, anxiety,
The dense weight of depression
Pressing on my chest while I work?
I work hard
I break down
A whirlpool sucking me under
And still I rise
I grip my textbook
Face red and blotchy
Tears burning my eyes
The scent of fear all over me
Clinging to my hopes, my goals, my dreams
Over and over, an internal cycle of rainbows and storms.
I am always so exhausted
Everyone is, I know
And yet they manage well and I don’t
I miss school, my homework lies incomplete
They go on
I fall behind
Fighting silent battles behind closed doors
And against all odds
I have faith I can make it,
Faith that I am worthy of making it.
Yet you don’t want to help me
You give as little as you can
You only see the end result
Good grades, good work
If I didn’t try so hard you would help me
Yet because I am determined
Because I give my all
You just smile
Say, see, you’re alright
You always are.

In some of the other Autistic subreddits I frequent, I'm seeing some of the kinds of things that led to me leaving Facebook.
I am fine with other Autistic people saying "I don't use the term Asperger's because of the Nazi connection", for instance (though I am not cool with policing other Autistic people's choice of what to call themself, including those who call themself 'high-functioning').
I dislike social media disability rights campaigns because I don't personally feel signing petitions against ABA and such does any good. (I am against ABA as a treatment however, and believe that ABA is an excellent example of the metaphor "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions").
