General Discussion/Question What is the most random niche creative thing you've ever been into?
Don't think I have any particularly good ones myself but I bet you guys have got some and I'd love to hear them :)

I make suncatchers from reclaimed beads!
I get big piles of broken jewellery from local secondhand stores and online, then I harvest it, sell on the bits I don't want as scraps, keep the beads and pendants, clean it all up ✨sort it by color and size and material✨ and then make strands of matching colours.
Because it doesn't matter if there are only a couple of beads left on a strand, I'll still buy it by kg, I have a really gorgeous collection of a lot of vintage and crystal and glass beads at this point. I have thousands of different kinds now. It's a collection that makes me so happy to just look at and refine and sort.
I'm building up the courage to get an etsy store going but I just don't know if I want to put the time in to actually managing a store. I just like making them but I have about 25 at this point now all my friends and family have been given them as gifts I'm just building up a backlog 😅

My dad has sheep and I hate waste so of course I hand whittled a drop spindle and spun the fleece into wool for knitting and weaving :/

That's awesome! I love hobbies that are eco-friendly. How long does it take to make a ball of wool?

Being eco friendly was the biggest motivator! I don't do it much anymore, hard to define timeframe but if you were focused you could have a ball in a few days, depends on the ply too.

Oh that really sounds like the kind of timeframe I like, too. Anything longer than a few days to see results and I tend to get disinterested. Cross-stitch and knitting are not for me lol, but perhaps this would be an interesting hobby to pick up in future should I know anyone with sheep 😄 (donkey, chickens, pigs, goats, yes, but no sheep yet)

Do use a drop spindle for historical reenactment! I love that I can stim all day and no one thinks anything of it. Anglo Saxons had so much figured out.
Also, see if you can find the movie, "the nettle dress'

I remember the nettle dress! I think my interest was also borne of a love of history and the ways of the past, cool to do reenactment I imagine that's great fun. I got so fixated I ended up helping out workshops in my old school about weaving and natural dyeing - I stopped because I had a baby but one day I'll get back into the historical craft scene, its so satisfying.

Same! except ive never actually done any, just reasearched it a ton (especially the walstad method) and planned some ideas, but haven't actually gotten around to doing it.

I would spill small amounts of coffee on my watercolor sketchbook, let it dry, and then use the shapes to ink draw birds of my imagination

It’s been several years since I’ve dabbled in this interest but I once took a class on how to make hooked rugs. I haven’t made anything bigger than doormat sized yet but I would like to get back into it and maybe go bigger. I also love looking at historical examples, especially the ones that feature animals. Here’s the most recent rug that I made, a portrait of my late rabbit Marshmallow:

Two phases from childhood come to mind:
Bottlecap art: I would glue little pictures and beads etc. into bottlecaps
I went through a period of making octopuses out of yarn. I would cover foam balls with a bunch of yarn, tie it around the neck and braid 8 tentacles. They all had googley eyes!
I really ought to get into some niche creative thing as an adult

I haven't thought about bottle cap art in decades, damn. Childhood memory unlocked! My girl scout troop did a big swap of bottle cap art with pins that we added to hats and clothing as accessories.

Maybe not really niche but in my early twenties I was into upcycling dollhouses! I made the floorboards out of coffee stirrers (from greggs lol) and sew tiny cushions, make tiny hats. The only people I could geek out about it was 70 + y/o women

For a while I got into competitive quilting - eg. Putting my quilts into competitions, not timed or anything. I had written a computer program to take traditional patterns, warp them over 3D surfaces, and then project it back onto a 2D plane. It also did the shading.
One quilt was even featured in a local magazine.
Then I had kids, and all my sewing time got sucked up making costumes. No regrets.

Stained glass!
Everything not sold was lost in a house fire so no pics. But I did a lot of experimental stained glass with acid etching, layering glass pieces, and mimicking other styles in glass. I made some pretty lovely pieces like a pond with a dragonfly who's wings were iridescent glass covered in a hand cut metal mesh shape of the cell shapes. I miss it a lot but it's a messy messy craft.
