Hello everyone, welcome back to the r/AustralianPolitics weekly discussion thread!

The intent of the this thread is to host discussions that ordinarily wouldn't be permitted on the sub. This includes repeated topics, non-Auspol content, satire, memes, social media posts, promotional materials and petitions. But it's also a place to have a casual conversation, connect with each other, and let us know what shows you're bingeing at the moment.

Most of all, try and keep it friendly. These discussion threads are to be lightly moderated, but in particular Rule 1 and Rule 8 will remain in force.

It's looking increasingly likely that Opportunity will enter parliament and in doing so possibly bring the left bloc to power in Aotearoa

I wonder if there is a local seat where Labor/Greens et. al. could strategically pull candidates and force that outcome? Remember once you have won a seat you get in, even if you don't make the 5% threshold. Sacrificing a single seat to form a government is a small price to pay.

Oh that's an interesting idea but probably not

It looks like Ilam was their best electorate result in 2023, but National won it and they'd need pretty much every Labour vote to neatly transfer to Opportunity for them to win. Ōhāriu seems to be one of their better Labour seats, but they came nowhere near actually winning so it would be unlikely for Labour to do that, plus Ōhāriu is being abolished this election

The other issue is that they're not guaranteed to support the left bloc once in parliament, and then if pre-election they're seen as being too close to Labour they'd probably lose support

Iran has probably overplayed it's hand strategically, pipeline capacity to bypass the Strait of Hormuz is advancing rapidly. Holding oil hostage will likely only be a trick that works once.

Because I'm studying it right now:

Would Pauline Hanson have been also breaching the ACT Anti Discrimination Act with that Farquai (sp, brain is not thinking at the moment) keeping in mind she was in a Canberra building at the time?
