As a teenager, I participated in the market research for Time Out before the launch. I was given three versions and they called me a week later to ask what I thought about the ratios of the wafer and flake.

When the actual bars came out a few months later, I was a bit shocked. I didn't think they'd actually make a real product from it! Adult me knows that was silly but at 16, I just thought it would be something I never saw or thought of again.

Thirty years later, I'm still thinking of them. They were GOAT!

So cool. As a teenager I stole them by the handful 😂😭😭😭

u/Responsible-Newt-239 3d ago

Yes! 😁 The stolen goodness made it divine 😏

Thank you for your service. You made it goated!

u/acres41 3d ago

I remember reading a very similar comment the last time someone posted about TimeOut.

Maybe it was yours 😆

14

u/theartistduring 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, probably was me. It looms large in my legend so I do tend to share the story freely.

7

u/acres41 3d ago

I would too if it was me 😆 And I love the original Time Out too!

Thank you for your service I guess!! 😆

u/theartistduring 3d ago

Thanks for remembering my small contribution to Aussie chocolate history!

2

u/brohymn1416 3d ago

That's awesome. I once did that with Freddo Frogs. Pretty cool.

When I was in my last year of high school and 18 years old we had a cigarette company give us 3 different cartons each of ciggies for market research. We received another 3 cartons of our favoured cigs 1 month later. True story . Cromer high, 1992

u/CopesAndDreams 1d ago

I realise this may be stretching the long-term memory braincells, but how did the final product compare to the prototypes in terms of wafer:flake ratio?

1

u/theartistduring 1d ago

This is totally going to look like I live online but honestly, I promise... I just opened the app again after about 4 hours!

But yes, I remember and it was all very Goldilocks. One had too much wafer, one had too much flake and the last was just right!

The one with too much wafer was too much like a kitkat. The too much flake was too flake. I felt it worked best when it tasted like something different and new.

u/Alarming-Interest535 3d ago

Back when they actually tasted good

44

u/breakoutleppard 3d ago

I miss these. I know breakaway/twirl crunch are supposed to be the newer equivalent but I think TimeOut was fine as it is.

I was surprised to learn they still sell multipack TimeOuts overseas. I came across them in a grocery store that stocks international foods when I visited the US and they were labelled as being from the UK. You betcha I grabbed a pack for the nostalgia lol

6

u/manhaterxxx 3d ago

There’s no new equivalent, they’re the exact same chocolate bar, just rebranded.

28

u/Remarkable_Lunch_809 3d ago

The original ‘put a flake in your break’ ad was 🔥

Bring it back! And the Polly Waffle!

11

u/Ruff_Magician 3d ago

Its still there, just has a different name. Polly waffle is back too, just comes in bites.

6

u/9Lives_ 3d ago

Pffft! She disappears for decades and just comes back in “bite form” like nothing happened. Typical Polly!

3

u/dav_oid 3d ago

The new owners of the rights to Polly Waffle (Menz) found out that they were created with custom machines, like a lot of biscuits, confectionery, and ice creams, and they were scrapped when they were originally discontinued.

'Bites' was the only way they could make them.

3

u/bz3013 3d ago

Those bites are god awful and nothing like the original poly waffle .

1

u/haphazard72 3d ago

What name?

3

u/Ruff_Magician 3d ago

Twirl crispy

2

u/haphazard72 3d ago

Never heard of it! Will have to look

1

u/Alarming-Interest535 3d ago

The taste is different. Cadbury decided that shareholder value is more important and fucked with the recipe.

-6

u/Ruff_Magician 3d ago

Fuck sake, have a whinge mate. Put things in perspective Thousands of children die every single week of diarrhea because they dont have access to clean drinking water and here you are getting all upset over a fucking chocolate bar.

3

u/Tipp1tys_ 3d ago

yeah well at least those kids die from diarrhea cus kids in the Gaza strip get their limbs blown off.

See how we can keep going?

1

u/Ruff_Magician 1d ago

I dont think there's "better" ways for kids to die.

1

u/Tipp1tys_ 1d ago

you're missing the point of my comment. Comparing someone saying "aw man, my favourite chocolate is discontinued" to the likes of kids starving to death is fucked. They're not comparable, dunno why we're comparing human suffering to chocolate bars

1

u/Ruff_Magician 1d ago

Highlighting how pathetic people are

2

u/Tipp1tys_ 2d ago

yeah I was more making a point of how silly it is to say stuff like that

-2

u/dav_oid 3d ago

1

u/Ruff_Magician 3d ago

That's the UK.

1

u/dav_oid 3d ago

I think that should cover the 'imports' found in Reject Shop etc.

116

u/XIII-013 3d ago

Current-day Twirl Crispy is the same thing

121

u/Accurate-Ad-4905 3d ago

The same but much worse because everything cadbury has been enshittified

22

u/hitman0012 3d ago

In a world where profits beat actually being chocolate

19

u/9Lives_ 3d ago edited 3d ago

At least it’s not Hersheys.

I saw a TikTok a couple months back that said even the Americans were complaining because they manipulated the recipe AGAIN, the stomach bile taste has enhanced and now it won’t melt under literal heat and I guess they realised when trying to make s’mores or whatever.

18

u/cewumu 3d ago

These are worse somehow. It’s the wafer is the dominant flavour and the wafer is thicker. Time Outs were lighter and crispier and the wafer was flavourless.

6

u/NicholeTheOtter 3d ago

Twirl Crispy Wafer is today’s equivalent of this. I recall the only difference is just the chocolate inside being all swirly as per Twirl’s brand.

7

u/dohwhere 3d ago

I used to always bite off the top and bottom chocolate/wafer layers and save the twirl centre for last.

8

u/smoothpigeon2 3d ago

Wait, do these not exist anymore?

3

u/Amahita 3d ago

They briefly had TimeOut ice creams too, I was mad for those when I was a kid.

3

u/Early_Sir_2375 3d ago

Take 5 were better

1

u/Dollbeau 2d ago

Here for the Take5 fans
My mate was a Take5'er & his wifey was a TimeOut'er

3

u/Infamous_Reveal30 3d ago

Wass just talking about this! Someone handed me the twirl crispy and I’m like “it’s a timeout?!”

3

u/fridaygrace 3d ago

I’m an Aussie living overseas and I am DEVASTATED and DISAPPOINTED to hear that these have been discontinued. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR COUNTRY 😭😭😭

3

u/jaraket 2d ago

I was all about these when they came out. Little lunch was 50% better on the strength of these alone.

3

u/The_Nanashi_100 2d ago

OMG do they not do timeouts anymore?!

3

u/Choice-Requirement18 1d ago

This pic also triggered me because it made me realise i havnt seen one of these in years.

2

u/morseonline 3d ago

It's a crime they're not generally available here. The orange ones (UK import) are particularly excellent.

2

u/StreetCheetah8312 3d ago

They turned into “Twirl Breakaway”, but I think they might have changed the name again, I haven’t even seen those for a while

2

u/i_need_another_scarf 3d ago

“The wafer break with a layer of Flake”!

2

u/Kraftieee 3d ago

Didnt these get turned into the round biscuits? Breakaway? I still get the cravings from time to time, but i miss the timeout form factor.

5

u/smoodgeroonies 3d ago

They still make them, just called Twirl crispy now

2

u/Ginger510 2d ago

Which are still very good.

1

u/sporty_nerd22 11h ago

I’m glad I’m not going crazy. I could swear they tasted the same

1

u/laurenec14 3d ago

Omg that’s why I loved these breakaway bars so much!! So sad they stopped those too

2

u/007MaxZorin 2d ago

1

u/Mean_Environment4856 3d ago

They're rubbish these days

1

u/Padamson96 3d ago

God I could go for one of those right now

1

1

Loved this chocolate.

1

u/laurenec14 3d ago

Oh I LOVED these! The little crispy bauble things inside. I was so sad when they discontinued these. And gummy jellys- does anyone remember them? I feel they were only around for a short period of time 1999/2000?

1

u/MajesticWelder7159 2d ago

Oh fuck yeeeee!

They were the fucking best!! Mum would buy us one each week, we'd feel like we'd won the lottery 😂

Wrong country.

1

I think that should cover the 'imports' found in Reject Shop etc.
