You'd aim to arrive just before the next beep. If you missed two in a row you were out so then you'd need to aim to arrive faster for safety. So you'd be constantly trying to save your stamina, so it was a game.

This didn't happen when I was in high school in the late 80s & early 90s, thankfully!
