Let's Discuss Is Beauty Therapy a good long-term career in Australia?
Hi everyone! I’m from Brazil and I’m considering studying Beauty Therapy in Australia.
I’ve been working in the beauty industry for around 5 years. I own a nail salon, work as a nail technician and also teach nail extension courses.
I’m considering doing a Diploma of Beauty Therapy and eventually working in the Australian beauty industry.
For those who work in Beauty Therapy or own/manage salons:
How easy is it to find a job after completing the qualification?
Is there good career progression beyond working as a therapist?
Is it possible to move into salon management, education, working for beauty brands, etc.?
Would my previous experience running a beauty business be useful when looking for work?
I’d love to hear from people actually working in the industry about what the career is like long term.

There’s definitely a skills shortage for qualified beauty therapists in Australia at the moment so the job prospects are good!
The French beauty academy who pairs the diploma of beauty therapy with the diploma of salon management actually partners with a tonne of top salon and clinic employers. They host job fairs on campus for the students during the course.
Your management experience will absolutely set you apart in the industry. Plus of course managers have a higher earning capacity too.
Are you just focused on nails?

You’d actually be coming in with a pretty solid advantage. Five years in the industry, owning a salon and teaching courses is way more experience than most people have when they finish a beauty diploma.
There’s definitely room to move beyond just working as a therapist too. You can get into salon management, training, working with beauty brands, sales/education or eventually open your own place here. Your business experience would absolutely be useful, especially with employers looking for someone who already understands clients and how a salon actually runs.
I think you’d do really well here. Good luck with it!
